Hop Scotch
By: Asriel Date: April 7, 2017, 3:15 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
"Come on Mistral! It's this way!" a very young prince exclaimed
as he held onto the skeleton's hand and eagerly pulled at him to
follow. His excitement was boundless for he couldn't help but
hop and skip to expel any excess energy as he impatiently waited
for him to follow.
Asriel, whom was around six-to-seven years old, had lead the
skeleton through one of the castle's many hallways until they
had finally reached the kid's bedroom. They had barely entered
the room before Asriel had let go of his hand, skipped ahead of
Mistral and looked up at him with large, glittering brown eyes
filled with cheer and excitement. He then placed an index finger
over his lips to make a secretive 'shh' sound.
"You're not allowed to tell anybody! It's a surprise!" he
insisted in a hoarse whisper before covering his mouth with both
hands to muffle a cheeky giggle, "I made something for mummy!"
The young prince then took off to the other side of the room,
rushing past the numerous toys which had scattered the floor
from a previous play time -he had yet again 'forgotten' to put
them away - until he reached a small table that had crayons
spread all over it, pieces of paper filled with scribbles and
child-like drawings and a handful of golden flowers which had
been freshly plucked.
Still caught up in his excitement, Asriel hastily grabbed the
flowers and a recent drawing before bounding back to the
skeleton. On his way, however, he wasn't looking where he was
going and tripped over one of his toys; sending the kid flying
forward and landing flat on his stomach. The flowers and paper
were also dropped in the process. There was a couple of seconds
of silence as Asriel stared right ahead of him with wide eyes
from shock before he started shuddering and bawling his eyes
out.

Seeing the young boy, the culmination of both Toriel and
Asgore's love, filled Mistral with jubilation. Magic was in the
air as the Caretaker would follow the boy to his room. The
bright and playful innocence of a fresh Spring flower, Asriel
Dreemur. After everything that they had been through, the
battles that were fought, the choices that were made, seeing the
young prince happy and healthy, it made everything worth it. "A
surprise you say? My word Asriel, have you finally put your toys
away on your own! Marvelous!"
Mistral gave the boy a warm laugh as he was lead down the
hallway, but it seemed as if his playful tease would go
unnoticed, the boy was surely excited. "For your mother, how
thoughtful I'm very proud of you, Asriel. Alright let us see
what awaits in your room."
And sure enough, Mistral clicked his teeth in disdain at the
state of the room. A sound the young boy was probably used to.
"Mr. Dreemur..." Mistral lightly scolded. "We talked about this,
after we show your mother, we are cleaning this up. It is
important you follow through on your word. As I've said, we are
nothing without our integrity."
Though as much as Mistral believed in what he was saying, it
still was difficult to be a responsible guardian to a face like
that. Mistral developed a soft spot for the boy since the day he
was born. Nevertheless, Mistral still had a duty to fulfill. No
boy under his watch was going to grow up a lazy bones!
The guardian felt his mouth open in concern at what transpired
next. He stood calmly for a moment before listening to the boy
cry.
"...."
Calmly the tall Skeleton gently leaning to his knees, examining
the flowers and drawing carefully. The drawing was a bit
creased, and the flowers were a bit mangled. Gently mistral
picked up the flowers and plucked a few frayed petals, and he
gingerly began to run the creases out of Asriels drawing.
With Asriels gifts in hand, the gentle skeleton moved to Asriel
and carefully scoped the boy to his feet. His voice was soft,
calmly pulling the wrinkles from the boys shirt.
"It's ok...it's ok..." he gently reassured. "Asriel...it's
alright...look." He showed him the gifts, which we already in
much better condition than they were when they fell.
"....no matter the trial or challenge, no matter what we lose...
we can always recover..." he did his best to smile.
"Don't ever forget that." He handed them back to the boy, wiping
his tears and cheeks with a handkerchief.

During his excitement, Asriel didn't quite respond to Mistral's
assumption to putting away the toys but he did wince slightly at
the 'Mr Dreemur' remark. In return he couldn't help but cast him
a guilty, yet sheepish grin before running off for the drawing.
Then when he had come to comfort Asriel, he would soon find that
the boy didn't sustain any injuries to be concerned about. A
light bruise may develop later, but really he had started crying
from the shock of falling over and what had happed to his gifts.
The young prince blinked as his cries were soon reduced to soft
sobbing and the occasional hiccup here and there whilst he
listened to the skeleton speak. At times he would stare blankly
at Mistral at a number of words he wasn't familiar with, but he
liked how reassuring the skeleton sounded.
Upon seeing the flowers and drawing in a much better state
Asriel gasped with a broad smile before suddenly hugging the
caretaker tightly, "Yay! You fixed it! Thank you!" he exclaimed
cheerfully with tiny, rapid wags of his fluffy tail.
The young prince then looked at his colourful drawing mote
carefully, pouting a little as he thought to himself before
showing it to the skeleton properly and bleated, "Will mummy
like it? Where is mummy and daddy?"
While it was a little challenging to see whom was whom in the
child's drawing of stick figures, scribbles and assortment of
colours; distinct characteristsics of each monster could be
identitfied. One was tall and broad with large horns, 'yellow'
shoulders, a large purple cape and a mess of yellow scribbles
all over his face. Another was someone whom was a little shorter
with smaller horns, purple dress and white sleeves. The third
figure was the smallest one wearing green and yellow; and
finally next to the family was a fairly tall, skinny stick
figure wearing black and white holding a block shape of some
kinda in his hands. All of them were standing on what looked
like green grass - judging by the green mess of jagged lines -
and were surrounded by an assortment of shapes and scribbles. It
seemed that Asriel had let his imagination run wild with the
environment, but the colours used were pretty consistent with
parts of the castle he had been familiar with.

There's a certain level of happiness that can only be achieved
through the satisfaction of making someone else happy. As the
boy sob's began to fade, Mistral continued to gently wipe away
the tears. The boy was young, delicate, and impressionable.
Looking into Asriel's eyes, that pure unadulterated innocence,
it made Mistral want to shield the boy from the horrors the
world had to offer. He placed his handkerchief gently on the
princes nose as he would dab away any remain fluid that dripped
from it.
When Mistral felt Asriel's embrace, the skeleton felt a powerful
and gentle emotion brew deep within his soul. He felt warm, a
small determination beginning to brew. Gingerly, he returned the
gesture, remaining quiet for a few moments as the emotion of the
situation settled in. When the child thanked him, Mistral's hug
became just a bit tighter, "You are very
welcome...I will always be there for you, Asriel. You are my
friend." Mistral would then look the boy, a brightness to
his skeletal features that seemed to glisten whenever he felt
joy.
"There now... if you believe to be injured, we
can have a look at it later, but you're strong Asriel, I don't
think a little fall will stop you from your dreams, now will
it?" The skeleton would chuckle lightly as he moved from
the embrace, patting the boy's shoulders. "Let
us see what you have drawn...."
"My word... I love it." The caretaker
admitted, the emotion he felt earlier even stronger, instantly
recognizing who the drawings would represent. Mistral did his
best to not chuckle at the tall black figure next to the family,
it was so funny to himself drawn that way. [font=arial
black]"But, dare I ask, who are these dashingly handsome devils,
and what realm have you created for them? And what is the tall
and skinny one holding in it's hands?" He teased, looking
to Asriel with his jaw coyly open.

The prince hopped away in a child like fashion, waving his arms
in the air, "Yeah! I am super strong! One day when I grow up I
am gonna be the God of Hyper Death and help everyone with their
hopes and dreams!" he proclaimed before running around in
circles with his arms stretched out and making sound effects as
he went. He would occassionally point his arms to different
objects in the room and follow through with making 'tch tch
phew' noises with his mouth.
He then hurried back to Mistral, looked to his drawing, then
back at the skeleton with a huffy pout, "This is mummy, daddy,
me and you! We're in the castle with Santa and the Easter Bunny
and the Tooth Fairy dancing at a party!" he said
matter-of-factly as he pointed them out, sounding like it was
obvious, "And you are helping mummy make a snail pie! That's a
snail pie there!"

"The God of Hyper Death? I daresay, Asriel where did you come up
with such a silly name?" Mistral chortled, shaking his head as
he looked from the picture to Asriel, watching the boy run
around his room yet again. "Well then, sounds like a good dream.
I like it, however, I hereby dub thee "The God of Forgetting to
Put Away His Toys!" The skeleton teased once more. "We all have
to start somewhere, don't we? I've heard a secret by the way!
The Tooth Fairy can't give you gold for a missing tooth if you
have a messy room! And The Easter Bunny? He'll hop on top of a
toy and bruise his toe, and he'll forget all about leaving a
toy. And let's not forget Santa! I heard lately he's been
putting people on a list that misbehave.... you better watch
out, and no crying if you decide to keep your room this way!"
Mistral continued to drive the point home.
When Asriel made his way back to the Caretaker, Mistral gave the
prince a gentle rustle on his scalp, his fingers messing up the
goats fur a bit before gently patting it back down. He really
did love the boy.
"Your father sure looks big and strong! Look at those horns! And
your mother, as graceful as ever. And look at you, a smile that
can brighten anyone's day... Oh? You don't say.... that's me?
Well... thank you!" The skeleton cheerily laughed, pointing to
himself. "Well... you certainly captured my strapping good
looks, that's for sure. You think I'm that tall?" he teased yet
again. "Ah yes! Snail pie! I've been working really hard to
learn that recipe from your mother... I still haven't gotten it
just right yet. Let me tell you Asriel, that is no easy treat,
but someday, when you're just a bit older, all three of us can
make it together, and then you can give your father the biggest
piece!"
Mistral looked back over to Asriel. "Really now, you went
through all this trouble....I know your mother will love this,
well done Asriel." he praised softly. "I didn't know we had an
artist in the family! But, I ask you this, out of everything you
could have drawn, anything in your imagination, anything in the
whole wide world... you drew your family, above all else...why
is that?"

"Silly?" Asriel exclaimed with surprise as he stared up at the
skeleton, "It's not silly! It's super cool... I'm cool aren't
I?" he added, his voice wavering slightly with doubt. Then the
young prince's attention was drawn towards the array of toys
scattered across the floor as he listened to the skeleton made
his point over and over.
With an exaggerated sigh and hunching over, the young goat
reluctantly made his way over to the toys - plodding on the spot
deliberately every now and then, as if to attempt to
procrastinate and delay the inevitable. He reached the first toy
on the floor and he glared at it, huffing out a pout once again.
His soft feet stomped on the spot several times in a short
display of a tantrum before he turned to face Mistral again,
"But why do I have to? I'm just gonna play with it again." he
whined but looking at that skeletal face for more than a few
seconds the young prince knew that he couldn't get away with
many things with Mistral than he usually could with say other
residents of the castle. Feeling defeated, he slowly - but
surely - eventually picked up all his toys and dumped them into
the toy chest.
He once again plodded back to the care taker and his ears did
perk up when he decided to mess with his fur and Asriel let out
a giggle-like bleat in response. His mood shifting dramatically
from the little tantrum he had earlier as he listened to the
skeleton's praise, "Yeah! You're reeeeeeaaallly tall! But that's
not a bad thing! I wanna be tall too!" he exaggerated as he
threw his hands into the air and reached as high as he could
whilst standing on his tippy-toes for emphasis.
"Yeah your snail pie is yucky." Asriel added with the same level
of brutal honesty as other children whom weren't old enough to
understand that it could hurt some one else's feelings, "But
mummy is so good at cooking she can teach the both of us how to
cook! And that's not fair, I want the biggest slice! I'm not a
baby anymore, I'm six!"
He smiled wider at the last bit of praise and puffed his chest
out proudly, "I draw'd them because I love them." he said simply
with a shrug, not really sure on what else to say or other ways
to explain it.

The little dreemurr's bleat in response to the affection was
perhaps one of the most adorable things Mistral had ever heard.
Asriel truly was a blessing, but that only meant that Mistral
had to work harder to assert the boy's responsibilities and
growth. No, he would not help raise a spoiled prince! He would
not bend easily, and Asriel was aware of that. The boy needed
structure and guidance, but praise and affection was equally
important. Balance was key. He was proud to see that Asriel,
although begrudgingly, had put away his toys when Mistral had
asked him to.
"You want to be tall too? Well you are your
father's son, and your mother isn't too far off either. You'll
just have to eat right and exercise. Speaking of which we will
beginning your training soon. And my snail pie might be 'yucky'
" he playfully added, "but
I know how to cook much more than that. If you want to get big
and strong, you're going to have to eat ALL your food. Including
your greens, young man. Maybe after you
start eating those you can have the biggest piece of the
pie." He chuckled.
"I draw'd them because I love them."
Mistral paused as he heard this, calmly looking to the drawing,
then back to Asriel.
"...I love you too Asriel."
There was a few moments of silence before Mistral coughed.

"Right. Well, your room is clean, yes? Why don't we go show your
mother now. And be sure to let her know what you told me just
now, I'm sure it will just make her day."

The little goat prince stared at Mistral as he spoke, he had a
general idea of what he was talking about but once again some
part of his speech did fly over his head, "Training?" he echoed
with a tilt of his head; his right ear flopping over his face in
the process. When he heard a particular word the young prince
groaned as he lifted up his ear and peered from underneath it,
"All the greens? Why not just two bites? That's more than one
bite!" he pleaded in an attempt of a negotiation.
Upon the mention of showing his gifts for his mother Prince
Asriel leapt to his feet with excitement and bounced on the spot
in a kid-like fashion, "Yay! Okay! Let's go! Let's go!" he
cheered, eagerly taking Mistral's free hand and tugged, urging
him to follow back out of the room in search of the queen.
-------
Some time had passed, days, weeks, months, perhaps more; but one
thing was for sure was that the young prince was a little older.
One late afternoon, the young goat wandered about the castle in
search of Mistral with a large red book in hand. Eventually, he
did find the skeleton in one of the rooms he typically could be
found in. Asriel then knocked sheepishly, "Uncle Mistral? Are
you here?" he called out meekly.
