Show Some Backbone! [Lucian/Mistral] [PAST]
By: Lucida Console Date: April 6, 2017, 6:24 am
---------------------------------------------------------
As history tells us, we know that Monsters were not always
trapped where they are right now, in the cold underground
beneath Mount Ebott. Way back when, it was simply where their
homes were; where they took small luxuries in respite as often
as they could. There was some form of 'peace'. However, back
then it was even less simple of a matter.
Monsters and Humans could roam free and run into each other;
their encounters would generally go as one might expect. Dust.
On the off chance someone was incredibly lucky, nobody would be
injured and the Humans involved barely register it as a fever
dream.
The one thing Monsters had in terms of an advantage was that
Humans barely believed in their existence. One day; that would
all change very rapidly and very violently with carnage on both
sides of the conflict; ultimately the Monsters would lose and be
sealed away.
However, it doesn't mean they didn't try... The question was how
many of them were truly [glow=orange,1,30]brave[/glow] enough to
stand their ground?

A tall young-adult Skeleton, dressed up in what looked to be
some hybrid between a business suit and lightweight leather
armor paced around the living room of their house. This was
Lucian. He was all sorts of excited and giddy; today he would
finally be train with his older brother; Mistral, who had always
been so busy in recent years; what with his calling to higher
education and prowess in general hospitality. Even going so far
as to have the young prince Asgore-- yes the one that would soon
become the king we all know-- took notice. In many ways Lucian
was proud, but also somewhat jealous... No, not of Mistral's
achievement, that was the part he took pride in. He was jealous
that other people would spend so much time with his brother
instead of him. Today that would change!
The Monster community knew that being king or queen came with
responsibilities often too great for a normal person to handle
alone. So, the Monster that ruled over them all needed trusted
advisors, scientists and guards. Royal Guards.
Lucian was going to train himself to become one of Asgore's
First Fifteen.
"Ooorgh." The armored Skeleton suddenly stopped, almost
vibrating on the spot. The entire house would rumble.
"Mistraaaal, come ooon! whats taking you so long!?"

"Patience my dear brother, it is a virtue that can serve us all
quite well in the future. Oh no!" Mistral would exclaim in a
mocking tone, "It appears my bow tie is getting the best of me!
It is confounding me in a dexterous duel of fingers vs ribbon! I
may not make it out of this one Lucian! You may have to wait
even longer....!"
A hearty laugh would escape from the elder brothers dressing
room as the house would vibrate. The passion and excitement from
his brother was inspiring. Soon Lucien would most likely be
delighted to hear the clicking of his brothers shoes walking
down the stairs. "Only kidding Lucian, but I do encourage you to
think about what I said. After all, it has served me well
lately."
Mistral appeared before Lucian, a snug black bow tie on his
trachea, a clean white dress shirt with the sleeves rolled and
tied up, exposing his forearms, a black dress vest, and black
dress pants and leather dress shoes completing his appearance.
"But yes, I am ready. Shall we?" Mistral would click his teeth
and tilt his head happily as he gestured towards the door.
"And if you would please, recite your goals once more to me as
we walk out, it is important that you keep those fresh in mind,
regardless of whatever it is you are doing.. be sure to keep
them in mind and ready at all times."

"Dohhh, I ain't fallin' for that one again!" Lucian comically
waggled a finger towards the upper floor of the house. Eagerly
did he wait at the bottom of the stairs, leaning over the
railing all goofy-like up until he noticed Mistral's footsteps
approaching, to which he immediately straightened out and dusted
off his coattails. "I do understand, I'm just..." Rolling his
shoulders, Lucian's gaze tapered off to the side as he thought
deeply. What was he at the moment if not infinitely excited?
"Well, y'know; all fired up n'stuff?" He shrugged, looking back
to his brother; noting the spiffy new bow-tie and accompanying
ensemble. "Dapper as always, eh?"
Lucian gestured to his own outfit; it was a new one that he kept
hidden for a good while up until this very day. "Like my
trainin' armor?" He moved backwards and eased into one of his
martial arts poses to show it off a little more. "Coa made it
for me~!" Standing proud once more, Lucian thought of another
friend; Cobalt; a Dragon and budding blacksmith with a boatload
of talent to boot! '... Everyone is gonna be doing their best. I
absolutely cannot slack off.'
Walking out through the front door and towards the training
grounds the two would soon use; Lucian nodded; ready to recite
his goals and ideals. The skeleton held his hands behind his
back as he walked, tall and proud.
"I will be brave; and always seek out peace. To defend the
innocent, I shall fight with all that I have. To defend this
world from malice, I shall fight with all I have. Those that
seek to abuse their power shall meet my fists." Lucian took a
deep, decisive breath.

"Cobalt? She did that for you? Well, that's not so fair is it,
perhaps I should get some armor too!" He laughed, knowing full
well that armor was rather redundant for him. He sure loved
teasing his little brother. Mistral would take a close look to
Lucian's armor. "Your armor is very form fitting, great for
mobility, but you'll have to be deft with your hands to parry
away from your exposed areas. You can fix that with more armor,
but I feel that your talents and reactions are capable of such
feats to not need extra protection. Also..." Mistral calmly
added, reaching over to a belt and pulling it tightly,
tightening the slightly loose vest around his chest. "Do not
forget to secure your defenses..." he added cheekily, waving a
finger.
As he listened to his brother recite his goals to him, Mistral
nodded politely.
"I see, fairly admirable Lucian. I'm proud of you. Tell me,
where in the textbook did you copy that from?" Lucian's brother
chuckled, patting him on the shoulder, as he looked towards the
horizon. "Not that there is anything wrong with that.... but
life will not always be that cut and dry." His voiced lowered as
he would look back to his passionate sibling.
"...Be sure your goals are what you truly desire, not what you
feel is expected of you. Bravery is noble, but there are times
where boldness is just not enough. There are times where you
must stop, and consider your options. There will be many times
where the most heroic option may be least optimal. It is not
cowardice to live to fight another day, it takes courage to have
faith in yourself to recuperate and return stronger to a
challenge you could not previously overcome."
"There is no meaning in strength used only to hurt others."
Mistral would repeat, before seriously looking to his brother
for a minute. "I admire that, but what do you believe defines
strength, Lucian? Ask yourself that question. What is strength?
When should we be strong?
"Make sure everything thing you say and do, has a purpose. Be
vigilant and ready to describe why you chose your path, why you
wished to gain strength."
"...Now, I will ask you once more, brother. What are your goals,
your hopes, your ambitions, your dreams, why have you decided to
put your life on the line on behalf of others? What are you
offering the world?"
".... and you must never forget your answer."

"Mhm! She says it isn't all that good, but I like it cuz she
made it!" Lucian's dome sparkled from one chance ray of light as
he gave his brother a hearty thumbs up. He kept his pose the
whole time, up until Mistral fixed up his belt. "Oh. Thank you,
brother! that explains why it felt sort of off-balance. Mm. I'll
have to remember the ins and outs of this armor~"
The younger of the brothers was somewhat confused, and tilted
his head. Textbook? Wuh? "Uh... I don't really read very well,
remember? I got you to read stuff to me when we were babybones--
you got all the big words really easily and I don't think I can
even read those now." Lucian sheepishly held his index fingers
together and whispered quietly to nobody in particular. "It took
me weeks to think up and memorize that code of honor too..."
He snapped back to attention when Mistral spoke of expectations.
Giving it some thought; he was being very literal about things
at the moment; nobody ever expected Lucian to be all big or
tough or strong, no. They expected something else. "Well.
Actually, mostly people expected me to be like you. You're the
best big brother there is, no doubt about it, but I can't be
you. Cuz I'm not. I can only be like me." He tapped the side of
his chin, trying to think about something to respond with "Hmm.
Remember that time when that cave made really creepy noises?
Back when we were very very young? Like, I looked all cool and
strong back then, but... I was actually scared. Probably more
scared than you, Gerson and the others. My body just started
moving and I just went in to see what was wrong-- and I'm glad I
did! Or we wouldn't have saved that injured fishman with the
spiky red hair."
Mistral was of course asking very logical and important
questions, Lucian folded his arms as he continued walking deep
in thought. He always had this very peculiar expression while
doing so. "I know 'strength' isn't that simple, I just donno how
to word it." Straightening out he held a hand over where one's
heart should be. "But its here, that much I know for sure."
He couldn't quite put what strength was to him in words, but he
knew damn well why he felt as though he needed it. For the sake
of the innocent; when nobody else would come, he would be there
for them. "My code of honor still stands, and I do this for
those that can't. I want to be someone whose presence, whose
smile can help people feel safe. When I say 'all shall be well,
for I am here', I want people to believe it, believe in
themselves, and to remember their own strength; their hopes and
dreams for a true peace. I might be one, yet I am
[glow=orange,2,300]one[/glow] for
[glow=orange,2,300]all.[/glow]"

[quote]You're the best big brother there is, no doubt about it,
but I can't be you. Cuz I'm not. I can only be like me."[/quote]
"That is correct. You cannot be anyone else but who you are. I'm
proud of you that you came to that realization so early. I never
expected you to try to imitate me, because it is not your
nature. No Lucian, while you and I are different, I cannot help
but respect your outlook on life. There are certain avenues of
your skillset that I believe you should refine, such as your
literary skills.." he scolded a bit, flicking his brother on the
forehead. "...yet it is not my place for me to assert what it is
you do. You've grown much enough on your own for you to decide
what it is you wish to pursue."
"And to reference the cave story, you decided that it would be a
good idea to just walk into the unknown without even attempting
to gather information! Both Gerson and I tried to hop on your
back to try and stop you, but you just continued to trek along
the cave as if it were your domain, and as if we we were
weightless! It as at that point I knew your stubbornness was a
blessing, but a curse as well. You must remain aware of that as
well. It will cause you trouble, but that is why we are
training, to prepare you."
The older skeleton listened calmly to his brother's explanation
for his choices, placing a finger on his chin as Lucian
admirably expressed himself. He really was proud of his brother.
They were both protectors, but in much different ways. A sword
and a shield even. Both served the same purpose, yet fulfilled
it in different ways.
"Very well....you've made yourself quite clear, brother."
Mistral adjusted his sleeves.
"You wish to protect? You wish to inspire peace? You wish to for
people to believe in you and encourage them to believe in
themselves? You better believe in yourself first."
Mistral's eyes darkened, his sockets practically howling with
emptiness.
"Then you will prove that to me now!" He snarled, his fists
clenching as he placed both fists behind his back. "You will
prove to me that you are capable of defending yourself first! I
may not be able to harm you, Lucian, but I can certainly judge
your maneuvers and strength with my barriers and sight alone.
You have ambition? Then you need to understand there is no room
for error when it comes to a life! You need to be devoted, you
need to adhere to your word! I will make sure that every spot of
weakness is purged from your soul, and you will be the gallant
warrior that you so desperately desire! But this is not my
burden, it is yours. You have the talent, the gifts, the
experience. You are my brother, Lucian!"
"Face me! Unleash your power upon me as if you wish to terminate
my life, show me everything, do not hold back! I will know
brother, I have seen you myself. You cannot afford to give it
any less than your all! People will depend on you, they will
need you, they will pray for you! This is not a game! DEVOTE
YOURSELF TO PASSION AND ACHIEVE THE GREATNESS THAT YOU SO
DESPERATELY DREAM FOR."

Lucian puffed out his chest, hearing that his brother was
impressed. Gosh, saying what you feel really is liberating.
Alas, pride was fleeting, as Mistral once again pointed out the
whole books thing. "D'oh!" Along with the forehead flick! Some
things never change. At the very least, Lucian could take a joke
or two. Or twelve. Actually, genuinely funny jokes and harmless
pranks were all good by him in general. Perhaps a few puns here
and there; maybe the odd junior jumble or crossword, despite how
hilariously bad he was at both.
The older of the two had his own opinion on the incident in the
caves, and when it came down to it, he was right too. "Heh, that
is very true. I won't be alone where I'm going after all! It'll
pay to be considerate of comrades... Eeeven if my instinct is to
help as quickly as possible."
Soon the brothers would arrive at their chosen training grounds.
It was a very vast public place built and funded by the current
Royal Family-- and a few people happened to be around, doing
their own thing. Because of this, Lucian knew he absolutely
could not go full tilt. For several reasons, of course the
primary one being that doing so would endanger those present
quite easily. He would still however put a lot of effort into
this!
Who knows, it might inspire some of the other hopefuls to train
harder.
Mistral certainly had a way with words. Any normal monster would
have been easily defeated by the prospect of even slightly
harming someone they held dear, but Lucian was no normal
monster. He knew Mistral better. He was selfless, caring and had
an undying love for those he held dear. In that regard they were
the very much the same. Everything he was doing now, was for
Lucian's benefit, and the younger brother wouldn't dare waste
this opportunity.
Lucian's eyes lit up, his sockets effectively bursting with
bravado.
The one in front of him, his training partner might be his
brother; an ever faithful pillar of support. However, in this
moment, until he was a Royal Guard, until Cobalt was the Royal
Blacksmith and Mistral was a Royal Caretaker, the elder brother
would be something else as well!

A rival.[/center]
Lucian gracefully adopted a fighting stance
HTML http://i.imgur.com/c0491hY.png,
loose gravel and dirt slowly
floated upwards under the pull of an unknown force before
abruptly dropping as Lucian leapt forward without a word,
leaving a light boot shaped indent in the dirt where he kicked
off. As he closed in on Mistral, he stared right into his
brothers eyes, swinging a punch aimed for the point just above
Mistral's left hip-bone. After the swing, be that it was blocked
by one of Mistrals famous shields, or that he made a graceful
maneuver away from it, the spot where Lucian once was had a much
deeper indent in the dirt as it crunched inwards on itself
slightly.
Now that was some pressure!
