Nightmares Behind Dreams [Zarc/Toriel]
By: Zarc Tenebris Date: April 4, 2017, 5:05 am
---------------------------------------------------------
Trawling through the Dump below the majesty of Waterfall, the
tall gangly winged monster; Zarc, moved along with an odd level
of haste. He had just met with an acquaintance and warned them
about the impending oddity of vines and golden flowers.
Thankfully being able to convince said acquaintance to stick
with next of kin, one of the two goobers that lived up by the
snail farms, Zarc now found his way back to the main path of
Waterfall. 'Now that that's taken care of...' Absentmindedly, he
dusted off his coat and shook out a bunch of excess junk. Sure,
he found some G that he could use later as a result but pretty
much the rest of what got stuck in his pockets was either junk
or spoiled astronaut food.
How that stuff ended up spoiled was honestly anyone's guess.
"Aw, gross." After stepping onto the proper path, Zarc noticed
he had a banana peel stuck to the bottom of his pants, he
wiggled his leg to kick it off and over his shoulder... Now
where would it land? Hopefully not in anyone's face!

A gentle whimper of surprise would ring out from behind Zarc,
Toriel, whom had been rather silent in attempting to follow
Sans' friend and had only just began to catch up to him. The
banana peel he'd had stuck to his pants and then kicked off over
his shoulder had landed smack dab right on the former Queen's
muzzle!
Going cross eyed for a few moments to peer at the fruit's skin
on her face, Toriel would soon shake her head to rid it from her
face, rubbing her white fur afterwards to try and get rid of the
gross feeling it left on her.
After the banana peel had been dealt with, she'd hurry off after
Zarc once more, reaching out this time to attempt to pat his
shoulder and grab his attention "Z-Zarc!"
She would call to him, placing her hands formally in front of
herself and looking around at their surroundings.
"You shouldn't go out all alone. What're you doing
in a place like this? Are you seeking something in particular
dear?" She would ask, rubbing her muzzle again,
"Would you mind if an old lady like me tagged
along with you?"

As soon as he heard the yelp, Zarc's hair puffed up outwards
like a supremely bothered owl, his wings twitched outwards as he
immediately jumped up into the rafters, hanging upside down like
a bat. He looked downwards at the intruder, now even more
surprised to see it was the former Queen of the underground!
"Jeez. Whats the big idea eh, why're you sneakin' up on me like
that?" He grumbled as he slowly glided downwards. "Sans been
teaching ya? Heheh~" Zarc pushed the bridge of his glasses back
upwards as he grinned.
The winged monster looked down the cave, into the dumps that he
recently exited before responding to Toriel. "I wasn't alone,
per se. I just spoke to a... Hm, acquaintance of mine. Gave them
a warning about those weird plants from earlier, thats all." He
shrugged casually. "Now why is it that you are so interested in
my activities all of a sudden? I'm curious."

Toriel would place her hands over her muzzle as her cheeks
blushed a light pink in embarrassment , "O-oh
dear!
I'm so sorry! My deepest apologies!" She would stutter
out as she stood back a bit, feeling quite troubled at scaring
Zarc like she had. "I was having trouble trying to
catch up to you..." She would mumble lightly, looking
aside, her blush worsening at the mention of Sans.
"Well.. I.. I suppose you could say he's taught me
a thing or two, but no, sneaking up wasn't one of them~"
She would add, a smile coming to her soft face.
"Warning?" The former queen would raise an
eyebrow, "I suppose you could say that I'd like to
know what's going on, what warning is there in regards to the
plants? What danger do they possess?" She would ask
before putting her hands together in front of her politely
"I apologies for coming across as snooping, you're
a friend of Sans' you must mean well, I trust that. I would just
like to have a better understanding of what's going on, it's
been a while since I've visited the rest of the
Underground"

From a pocket on his jacket, Zarc brought out a small plastic
block which flicked out into a hairbrush. He used it to make
sure his hair started to behave and re-style it to how he was
most comfortable with it as he spoke to Toriel. "Eh. It's no
biggie, was just a surprise, that's all. In the end, a pleasant
one." Storing his hairbrush away once more, Zarc rolled his eyes
with a smirk on his face. "Tch, dangit." He clicked his fingers,
feigning disappointment. "He won't even tell me how he gets
around so quick. I do appreciate that he helps me out with that
trick from time to time."
The winged monster nodded, he panicked earlier and didn't have
much time to explain his thoughts and why he reacted the way he
did. "Yknow a bit ago when we were all at Grillby's and how the
water flooded the place? With all the snow melting it revealed
the ground below-- but thats the thing." Zarc paused, waiting
patiently for Toriel to listen. "Those vines and the flowers. I
reckon they're suspicious. For one; I don't know of a plant that
grows so quickly and so aggressively. Secondly; the normal
climate of Snowdin wouldn't support it; nor would the dampness
of Waterfall. Rather, I don't think it would."
Zarc sighed. "That being said. There is one place that I've been
to, that might..." He looked to the floor for a moment, then
back to Toriel.

Toriel would soon smile hearing the surprise was actually a
pleasant one, as he brushed his hair, she would pat down her
dress and rub her nose again, hoping there wasn't any sign of
the banana splat from earlier still there. "It's
not the only thing he's keeping back then, I'm worried for him,
I fear his.. erm.. illness, is much more worse then what he was
showing" She would say softly, looking aside with a face
full of concern.
Toriel would nod to Zarc's question, she remembered the water
well, it was odd, Snowdin never melted beforehand, hence its
name really, but now it was and it was flooding with both water
and plants. Her eyes fixed on Zarc to show he had her attention.
"Quite right,
that is true, those plants grew incredibly quickly... And
Snowdin is so used to being full of snow all the time, the
residents are likely to also suffer at such a quick change of
climate... I do still wonder whom it was that tore the ceiling
open like that, and why" She would say before her
expression would drop at the mention of 'New Home'.
"... W..well you aren't wrong.. but I am no longer
in New Home.. This is all quite the puzzle isn't it?" The
goat monster would ponder, putting a finger to her lips and
closing her eyes "I wonder though, what is to be
done with the suspicious plants? And how're we to patch the
ceiling so Snowdin can return to its original climate?"
Toriel would rub her temples "All very puzzling
indeed.."

"Mm. You're right. I'm none too fond of how he doesn't ask for
help when he very clearly needs it." Zarc exhaled sharply,
putting his hands on his hips. "Although... I suppose we can be
sure that when he does ask for help then it really means
something. Usually something bigger than say--" The winged
monster then put on his best Sans impression [font=comic sans
ms]"hey buddy, mind helpin me stack these here hotdogs onto
doggos head and see if he notices?" Zarc snorted, it
wasn't the best vocal mimicry, but it was very blatantly an
attempt at a Sans voice.
He nodded to affirm Toriel's analysis of the information. "Mhm.
You know exactly what I mean; its all too sudden. With that
break in the ceiling-- which seemed to be around for quite some
time, a few days at least-- wouldn't the process of the snow
melting have been far more gradual instead? The light came and
went away; perhaps it was the sun of the outside world? Even
with that, I feel that it was too fast... Maybe some magic is
involved as well?" Zarc's expression scrunched up as he adjusted
his glasses once more. He was curious as to who caused this
conundrum too. "Unfortunately, we don't have very many leads, do
we?"
"Y-yeah, true. Sorry for bringing that up." Zarc scratched the
back of his neck awkwardly. Evidently Old Home held more
negative connotation than his own personal thoughts. It was to
be expected though, given Toriel's prior position as queen. As
for the repair effort, there were a few ways to go about it.
"Surely if we get enough Earth Elementals together, it can be
fixed. The plants on the other hand, might not be as easy to
deal with... Any ideas?"

Toriel would nod in agreement, Sans not asking for help made
their job as his friends harder afterall!
The Former Queen would burst into a fit of gentle laughter at
Zarc's impression of Sans, "Heeheehee! How many
hot dogs was it? Did doggo notice?" She would ask before
covering her mouth lightly, looking aside. As funny as it was,
they had a situation at hand!
She would nod again, the snow melting should've been much slower
then what it had been. "I agree. But who's magic
is it and why? Who has that kind of power?" The goat
monster would place her hands in front of her politely in
thought, before shaking her head slowly, she wished there had
been more leads to follow! There had to be something...
Toriel would wave a hand lightly, managing a light smile,
"Oh no, it's quite alright" She would say
back to his apology in bringing up Old Home, she knew he didn't
mean to harm her in anyway by mentioning it, and simply had
brought it up as it was relevant to a degree in their
conversation. "With how big the fissure is, I'd
say it's a fair call to say it is indeed the sun, it goes away
because of the night, but then comes back again, even then, I
doubt it would cause the snow to melt so rapidly.." They
probably could fix the fissure up with earth elements in some
way. But Zarc had a point on the plants..
"With the fissure fixed up, they will loose their
access to the sunlight, which will probably rid a lot of the
plants alone. Fire could also be used to clear them out,
perhaps? I think the removal of their growing source will do
well in getting rid of most of them though"

"Oh, at least twenty-one. Probably more. Who knows." Zarc
shrugged casually once again. "Also, not while we were doing it,
no. Doggo was happy though; he got free sausages."
Walking away from the entrance to the dump, he motioned for
Toriel to follow. "I'd go with some kind of fire related magic
at first; but due to the rarity in it's mastery to that degree?
It seems rather unlikely." He nodded sagely. "On one hand, thats
good, on the other hand its bad since we have an insufficient
lead once again."
He waited for Toriel before continuing to speak. "As for the
fissure itself, I can only think of one person with enough
individual strength to do it; but he would completely lack the
motive to do so.. Plus he'd probably just shatter the mountain
open completely if he tried." Zarc smiled nervously with his
hands behind his head. The sun and fissure had to be dealt with
in a very specific way; but the plants could at least be
monitored and held back with something like fire, that much was
certain. "Well, know anyone that can light 'em up?"
