Author's Note: I'm not really sure what made me decide to title
each chapter. I think I was trying to be cute. Not sure if
that worked, but I'll say this much... I'm nominating this one
for the cheesiest title ever. :P
Chapter 4 - Into the Light
My left eye was nearly swollen shut, and what vision it could
still provide was robbed by the blood running from the gash on
my forehead. My nose was also bloodied, and a mixture of blood
and sweat dripped from my chin and darkened my top. My head was
ringing, and my legs were rubbery and heavy with exhaustion. I
sucked in huge gulps of air but still felt as though I couldn't
breathe. Worst of all, my damaged side throbbed with such
intense pain that it made me want to scream.
I was hurt bad. And I knew it.
I looked over at my diminutive adversary. She, too, was a mess.
Blood trickled from the corner of her mouth, as she writhed on
the canvas. Her soft brown curls were so matted to her neck
with sweat, they looked like they were glued there. A huge,
nasty looking mouse had formed under her right eye. Her narrow,
muscled torso was covered in bruises. And, her eyes... those
dark brown windows that were somehow able to perfectly display
any mix of emotions you could dream up... were vacant and
       lifeless.
My heart broke just looking at her.
Though her body wasn't able, Emma willed herself to get up. She
rolled over onto her stomach, and forced herself to her feet...
only to stumble away into the far side of the cage. Still, she
tried to stand... clawing her way up the mesh... using her hands
to do what her legs had refused. She got herself upright, still
using the side of the octagon to steady herself. It was clear
she couldn't fight. She couldn't even stand. Keeping one hand
on the cage, she slowly pivoted to face me. With dogged
determination, she inched her feet apart until she found a
       stance that gave her balance.
And then, she brought her guard up.
I knew then that, if I wanted to stop Emma, I was going to have
to kill her. And, let's face it... I was stupid to think it
would be any other way. Yes, she was conflicted about her
relationship with Tiffany. Yes, she had misplaced those
emotions and taken them out on me. Yes... for the first time
since I'd known her, there were cracks in the armor. She was
vulnerable and even a little scared. But, she was still Emma.
I've said in the past that Emma can be beaten, but she cannot be
stopped. When she sets her mind to something, that's all there
is to it. Knock her out... break her bones... it doesn't
matter. As soon as she is able, she picks herself up, and she
       comes at you again.
She will never... EVER... give up.
As I looked over at the young, proud, beaten woman standing in
front of me, my heart dropped right out of my chest. How could
this have happened? What was I thinking? What had I
       accomplished?
How could I have DONE this?
       "No more," I said softly.
She just stood there... wobbling unsteadily... her gloved fists
       balled in front of her.
"No more, Emma," I said again.
"NO!" she hissed. "We finish it."
I shook my head lightly. "No," I whispered. "I'm not going to
       hit you again."
"You don't get to quit!" she shouted, her voice cracking with
       emotion. "Finish it!"
Tears welled in my eyes. "It is finished, Emma. I'm done."
"NO!" She moved to charge at me, but she simply couldn't. She
took one step and lost her balance... stumbling toward me, out
of control. I caught her and fell to my knees... my arms
wrapped around her head, cradling her to my chest.
"FIGHT ME!" she screamed as the tears started to flow. "FIGHT!"
She swung her left hand repeatedly... the weak blows landing
harmlessly on my right shoulder. I unhooked my right hand from
behind her, and gently pushed her arm down to her side.
Her body shook as he sobbed openly... the crying pausing only
when survival forced her to take in precious oxygen.
"Shhhh," I whispered softly as she rocked against me. "It's
       over."
She made no attempt to speak, or even to control the crying.
       She just wept.
"Emma," I whispered as tears rolled down my face. "I'm so
       sorry."
"Oh God, Richelle," she moaned. "What did we do?"
"Shhhh," I soothed again. "You didn't do anything. It was
       all... AHHHH!"
Emma sat bolt upright, knowing before she even looked at me that
       something was terribly wrong.
I clutched at my side as the room started to spin. My body
pitched forward... my head curling to the mat.
       "RICHELLE!" Emma cried.
I tried to answer, but I couldn't form the words. I rolled onto
my back, gritting my teeth against the nauseating pain.
       "Oh my God.... RICHELLE!!"
Emma's voice floated away from me as the lights above the cage
filled my vision with blinding whiteness. I could still hear
her, but she sounded like she was in another room.
       "Oh, God.... HELP! SOMEBODY HELP!!"
The last thought I had before I slipped into unconsciousness
was, perhaps, the most depressing thought I had ever had.
       There's no one else here.

I don't think that's too cheesy! Titles are hard. You'll notice
I don't title anything. Haha, I hate titling even the magazine
entries. I feel yours have worked.
And you were wondering who was in charge over at my place? At
least I'm still alive!! And all my ribs are in tact. :P
Brilliant narrative again. I hope you survive so we can read
       more!

Aww, c'mon... Into The Light? It's terrible. It's like some
       bad soap opera title. :P
I know what you mean about the titles, though... it gets pretty
hard. Especially for the mag, where the title sets the stage
for the rest of the article.
I don't think it's giving too much away to say I'm going to
live. After all, it would be hard to continue this first person
       narrative if I didn't. :)
I'm thinking the next chapter will be something a little
lighter. And, it will involve a character I mentioned to you
briefly by PM, Dragon. Let's hope I get her right. ;)

Titles are never easy! I have to make them up all the time for
the magazine and the cover. I think there must be a few I have
used over and over and over....
BTW...this is great stuff all of you are doing. When I
eventually manage to get the new website under control I hope to
       start writing on here too.

You live?! Oh, thank goodness. Haha, yeah I figured that
character was the next step. Didn't want to give anything away,
not that it particularly would. Well, how she gets there
could've. Anyway, I have no doubt you'll get her right. I've
seen what you've done with your other characters. ;)

Dragon, you're still too much... not that I mind the praise, of
       course. :D
John, I think I speak for everyone when I say we look forward to
the day you can join in on the RP fun. I know the website is a
lot to deal with, and I love the way it's coming out. Add to
that the fact that... oh, I don't know... you have a real job
you also have to go to... it's easy to see you've got a lot
going on. And, without your efforts, this little world we're
playing in wouldn't exist. Thanks. :)
I'm going to take the weekend off (I know, I know... it already
is the weekend, for you two). I have a press release I've
barely started (it doesn't even have a title, yet :P ), so I'll
try to get that done. Then, I'll try to get the next chapter
       out early next week.
