Haunted by the Past - Chapter 1 - Ruining a Good Day
It was a bright and beautiful winter morning. Snow had fallen
overnight... just enough to paint the world a pristine white.
The wintry weather had ended a few hours before dawn, meaning
nothing but clean roads and unbridled sunshine for the morning
drive. I walked into the RSI facility feeling happy and
energetic.
That feeling died about ten minutes later.
The moment Danneel Harris walked into my office, I knew
something was very wrong. Her cheeks were red and blotchy, the
coloring made all the more noticeable by the blanched appearance
of the surrounding skin. RSI's team leader was wearing a black
wool jacket... the same one she had worn the day before. Only
today, it looked two sizes too big, as she seemed to shrink
inside of it.
"What's wrong?" I said, no hint of uncertainty in my voice. For
Danni to look as she did, there was no doubt something terrible
had happened.
She didn't say a word. She simply extended her right hand... a
simple, unmarked, white envelope grasped between her thumb and
forefinger. I eyed it for moment, then turned my gaze back to
Danni.
"What is that?" I asked.
"Just take it," she said.
I had no idea what had happened to put Danni in this state. I
had no idea what thoughts were running through her mind. But, I
suddenly knew exactly what was in that envelope.
I shook my head.
"No."
"Richelle," she said, "please don't make this any harder than it
already is."
"I'm not taking it," I said, "until you tell me what's going
on."
She started to tear up as she held it out more urgently. "Please
just take the f*cking envelope. I really can't talk about it."
I reached out, snatched the envelope from her hand, tore it in
half and threw it in the garbage.
"Jesus f*cking..." Danni yelled. "What the f*ck is wrong with
you?"
"You can always make another one, if that's what you want!" I
yelled back at her. "But first, you need to tell me what's
wrong."
She opened her mouth to speak, but no words came out. Instead,
tears started to stream down her face.
Much like me, Danni is an emotional person. She gets angry,
worried, frustrated... and she uses those emotions to drive
herself. As long as there's a problem she can attack, Danni
will be fine.
But, what I saw from her now looking alarmingly like
hopelessness. Whatever was wrong, it was beyond her control,
and she didn't have a way to go after it. I had seen this from
her only once before. And the problem in that case had been me.
In a poorly conceived attempt to help Emma Watson work through
a bad period, I had stupidly gotten myself badly hurt. It
landed me in the hospital, and it left Danni with nothing to do
but wait and see how things turned out.
Wait and see is not something Danni does well.
I stood, came around my desk, and took hold of both of her
hands.
"Whatever this is," I said, "you know I'm going to help you with
it."
She shook her head.
"You can't help me," she said softly.
"You don't know what I can do, until you talk to me."
She looked sadly down at the floor.
"My past has come back to haunt me."

That was brilliant. Setting the tone right out of the gate. I
hope Danni's okay! Fix it, Richelle! Fix it!

I'm not going to say much, because I'm going to try very hard to
not give anything away in advance on this story. But, I love
getting feedback, if only to know that people are enjoying
themselves.
