Aftershocks
Alexandra Paul was once again in a bad mood. "That fucking
Spam!" she mumbled as she tied her shoe laces. She had switched
to another gym in hopes of avoiding running into the blonde
again. Not because she was afraid of Pamela Anderson, but
because she feared she wouldn't be able to control herself and
would severely hurt the blonde.
"First she ruined my Shockwave interview, then…" Alexandra threw
her bag into the locker and slammed the door shut with a clang,
"and then she hired that lousy Shay Mitchell from Dragon's Den
to attack me; to humiliate me!" She strode up the stairs three
at a time, her mind devising plans how to get even with the
blonde bully.
Today she would start with a run, after which she intended to do
serious strength training in the gym. Tomorrow she would be
training with Jessica Ennis.
She did some stretching outside the gym and was pleased to
notice that she got a lot of attention. A guy even came to chat
with her while she was stretching. "Sure you can tag along on my
run, but I will not wait for you if you can't keep up." Needless
to say, they guy couldn't keep up with Alexandra and soon she
was running alone with her thoughts.
As she ran she pondered on the current situation. Alexandra had
heard about the UMMA long before Raccoon had approached her. She
had been fascinated by this league were female celebrities
fought each other. She knew her athleticism and strength coupled
with her size and determination would have made her a star in
UMMA. Regardless, she hadn't even entertained the thought to
join. Until Raccoon had contacted her. She had immediately
jumped at the opportunity to be Raccoon's first fighter…the
first 'Coon! "This will be so much fun!" she had thought.
Winning had proven to be much harder than she had thought; the
girls were stronger, faster, better fighters than she had ever
imagined. UMMA was less fun than she had expected – it was hard
work! And then Raccoon had hired Hayden Panettiere and all the
remaining fun had disappeared. For some reason Hayden had
bullied Alexandra from day one. Luckily things had eventually
calmed down when more girls joined the stable. It had started to
be fun again!
It had been fun to bond again with Pamela Anderson on the
Imaginary Heroines. But then she had joined Pye's Gorgeous
Grapplers and left the team. And then, for no reason at all she
had started attacking Alexandra. As if Hayden wasn't enough?
"Are all blondes idiots?" she said out loud.
Alexandra continued her run along the beach boulevard.

“All the ones I’ve met.”
Natalie Portman casually added her opinion as if Alexandra was
actually asking her directly. She wasn’t of course, and Natalie
was fully aware of this, but the petite fighter also felt quite
strongly on the matter.
“Honestly, I don’t know that I’ve ever met a blonde whose IQ was
greater than a goldfish’s. But, I’m assuming you’re venting
about Pam Anderson; whose IQ is likely far less than that of a
soap dish.”
Nat ran alongside the much taller Alexandra, puffing now as she
had accelerated rather quickly to catch Alex when she noticed
her jogging past. Natalie had been taking a break from her own
run, knocking out a few stretches by the fence line along the
beach-side running track. Upon seeing Alex, she couldn’t pass up
the chance to grab some first-hand gossip. The recent Raccoon’s
stable press conference had been all the talk at Dragon’s Den,
since Shay had made her controversial appearance. Shay hadn’t
discussed it with anyone at the Den, but now Natalie had her
chance to hear it all straight from Alex’s mouth.
“I wasn’t trying to eavesdrop on your conversation with
yourself, by the way. Actually, I didn’t even realise you were
that weird. I was just going to tell you I thought what happened
to you was bullshit, and I hope you kick Pam’s ass.”

At first Alexandra just glanced at the girl and continued to
run. It took a few moments for the information to reach her
brain; then a few moments more before she had processed the
data. "Portman?" she screamed and jumped into the air like a
startled cat. "Where did you come from?" Alexandra's head was
spinning around looking for more attackers. She fisted her hands
and took a fighting stance. She looked Natalie up and down,
seemingly trying to evaluate her, trying to gauge the threat
level. Portman was small, but Alexandra had learned that size
didn't seem to matter in the UMMA – she had knocked out by
several pint-sized girls. Portman looked really fit…and… She
quickly realized that she knew nothing about Portman – different
organization and division. Was she a rookie? A prime? Of course
she knew Natalie Portman, but she didn't know anything about her
in the UMMA. Except that she was in Dragon's Den!
"You don't expect me to trust a Dragon's Den member?" Alexandra
said. She sounced nervous; It was clear that she wasn't as
confident as she tried to sound.

Now Natalie was gawking at Alex like she was crazy. She hadn’t
even bothered raising her fists to match Alexandra’s. In fact,
she hadn’t moved at all. She may have tilted slightly to the
side, like a concerned puppy trying to work out what was
happening in front of her. She wondered what she had walked
herself into.
“Trust? What’s trust got to do with it?”
Natalie glanced about in response to Alex nervously surveying
the area. It was just the two of them, bar a few stray joggers
paying them no mind. “I’m just going for a jog. Are you joining
me or flipping out and throwing yourself into the ocean like the
dried up old trout everyone’s saying you are?”
As Alex freaked out with equal parts derangement and suspicion,
Natalie gave her a funny look and turned her running short
pockets inside out. “I’m not going to jump you with a bucket or
anything, if that’s what you’re worried about. I don’t know if
you noticed, but, it would be kind of hard to conceal a bucket
in these shorts.”
Natalie stared up at the taller woman, still unfazed about her
fighting stance. She was beginning to think no amount of gossip
was worth spending time around this much crazy.

Alexandra relaxed slightly. "You can't blame me for being a bit
jumpy after all that's happened," she said. Alexandra looked at
the pockets, she looked at the shorts. She looked at the legs.
The sneakers. The torso. The cap. Arms. And the face. "She's
cute," she thought. She smiled weakly and said, "Let's run. A
moving target is harder to hit."
"But as I already said to fan today, I will not wait if you
can't keep up," she said sounding a bit harsh. She then added in
a kinder voice, "Not that I think it will be a problem for you."
Alexandra didn't say anything for a while. She did try to steal
a glance at Natalie from time to time. She increased her speed
trying to see if the younger woman could keep up. She knew she
wasn't fast, actually she had a rather lumbering gait, but she
could keep up a moderate pace for an extended time.
Eventually, when she had determined that Natalie wouldn't try to
attack or humiliate her like her stablemate had done, she spoke.
"I didn't mean what I said about blondes… Sure, Hayden and Pam
are…are…better not talk about them or I'll get mad again. But
Seppälä, my swimming coach, is blonde and she's as smart as
she's beautiful." She slowed her pace and looked like she just
had remembered something, "Thank you for what you said!" She
looked at Nat, "About beating Pam, I mean." She looked forward,
"There are not many who think I can beat her… Gena, Carmen,
Hayden to name a few, all believe Pam will destroy me in the
ring and win the triathlon. Even Hanna-Maria has begun doubting
me. She hasn't said anything of course, but she implied it
during our morning swim today." She looked for some reaction on
Nat's face before continuing. "She said she had run into Pam in
the pool… and that the bimbo had been surprisingly fast in the
water… Well, I knew that already; we swam a lot during Baywatch
and it had always perplexed me how her silicone floatation
devices didn't affect her speed at all. Hanna-Maria had said
that we needed to double our training sessions before the
contest next week." Alexandra looked sober, "Even I've began to
doubt myself…"

Natalie ran along with Alex, listening to her worriedly muse
aloud about her upcoming bouts with Pam. It was obvious to Nat
that Alex was stressing… big time. Anyone could tell it was all
starting to get to her. She looked nervous, and all they were
doing was running.
Nat giggled when Alex thanked her, and corrected the Baywatch
Babe without even thinking. “I didn’t say I thought you could
beat her. I just hope you do.”
She suddenly realised how insensitive that sounded. “But… I
haven’t paid that much attention to your game or hers, so…” She
let the words trail off and tried to move on.
“I meant every word I said. Blondes are duuuumb. Of course Pam
can swim. Fat floats, right? She’s got a head-start already.
Literally. Because she has a fat head.” Natalie continued to
cruise alongside Alexandra, wondering when she was going to step
it up and make her ‘keep up.’
“Look, the last thing you want to do is doubt yourself. You know
you can take Pam in and out of the cage. That’s all that
matters. All you have to do is train, watch her fight videos,
and outplay her on the day. It’s simple. It’s only Pam Anderson.
How tough can she be?”

"Oh, she is tough, believe me!" Alexandra said, "And I wouldn't
say she's fat…she's in fact quite muscular…her arms are
amazing!" She looked like she was trying to imagine Pam's arms
in her mind's eye. "And she's not…dumb, not really. It's just an
act. She's done a lot of good things – just look at what's she's
doing for animal rights and–" Alexandra stopped in midsentence
when she realized what she was praising Pam. "I– I mean that,
uh…well…" she flushed. "No…you're…you're right she's fat! A
bimbo. Stupid. Blonde bimbo and…stupid! And so fucking sexy– I
MEAN STUPID!" There was an almost comical look of horror and
embarrassment on Alexandra's face; she tried to change the
subject, "So do you…run? Much. I mean, you run now. But do
you…run at other times? Like when– uh." She was looking around
for a place where she could run and hide; not seeing any she
just began running as fast as she could, hoping to lose Natalie.

Alex had rambled like the mad-woman Natalie was starting to
think she was; and then she had fled.
Nat was confused, and her face displayed that quite obviously.
She had been under the impression Alex and Pam were rivals,
nemeses, enemies. Why was Alex praising her supposedly hated
foe? It made no sense to Nat. She absorbed it all, and then took
off, catching up to Alex without too much trouble.
“You’re odd. I hope you know that. You also need to stop
thinking so highly of this blonde bimbo. Why do you think she’s
been running all over you? It’s not because she’s better. It’s
because she’s playing a better mental game. Which is… weird. She
wouldn’t be used to that at all. You can’t let her get away with
that. Toughen up, and focus. I’m sure you can, you just have to
start paying yourself more respect than you’re paying Pam. And I
don’t think you are.”
Having made her point, Nat stopped talking for a bit. She didn’t
even bother answering Alex’s odd question. She was starting to
puff again. She was quick, so matching Alex’s top speed was
easy, but she didn’t have the stamina Alex seemed to have. The
taller woman seemed to be exerting no energy whatsoever in her
lumbering gait.

Alexandra was surprised that Natalie kept hanging at her heels.
"She's right," she thought, "I am behaving like a lunatic." She
stopped suddenly and turned around. Only to have Natalie bump
into her. Not the most agile girl around, long legs and arms
flailing Alexandra went down on her back pulling Natalie on top
of her. She panicked and began thrashing around with her limbs
making it impossible for either to get up. "Sorry, sorry,
sorry!" she kept repeating.
Then as suddenly as she had stopped running, she stopped
flailing with her arms. She calmed down, looked at Natalie and
sighed. She dropped her head down to the sand and just laid
there with her eyes closed. Then she burst out laughing.
