       The New Kid

       The New Kid
"I don't even know what the hell I'm doing here," said the young
blond woman sitting in my office.
"No one's making you stay, Olivia," I replied.
Olivia Holt sat back and stared past me and out of my office
window. No doubt she was silently fuming because the lack of
interest she'd received from the other stables in the UMMA had
forced her to come to me.
Not that I would know anything about how that happened.
"I don't really feel like working for you, after what you did,"
       she said.
"That's fine," I said. "I trust you can see yourself out."
She stayed where she was and fumed some more.
"I was doing fine," she said.
"You were playing games," I said coldly, as my glare bore into
her. "First you embarrassed yourself in what amounted to a
catfight against Cher Lloyd, and then you somehow outlasted
another untrained rookie in one of the worst fights I've ever
       seen in my life."
"A win is a win," she said.
"No, it's not," I said. "That was a disgrace. Neither of you
knew what you were doing. That fight was a laughing stock."
"Look I don't need to sit here and take this!" she yelled.
"I'll just do it on my own!"
"Sure. After all, that was working so well, before.
"Oh, screw you! You don't know me! You don't know what I can
       do!"
She rose in a huff, and stomped her way toward the door.
That was all the teenage bullsh*t I could take for one day.
"Sit down, young lady!" I yelled, rising out of my chair.
The phrase had come out of me without any conscious thought.
She whirled around to say something, her face a mixture of anger
and shock. The look on my face stopped her cold.
I knew the look well. I had seen it many, many times as I was
       growing up.
       "Sit!" I commanded.
Instead of arguing, she sort of stumbled her way back and
       flopped into the chair.
The look will do that to you.
"You have something you want to say to me, then say it," I said,
as I sat down as well. "Stop playing games."
"Fine," she said. "You turned me in."
Her tone transformed the sentence into an accusation... a fact I
found interesting considering I wasn't the one who had lied
about my age so that I could start fighting nearly a full year
       sooner than I should have.
"Yes," I admitted. "I informed UMMA management that you were
       underage."
"And then they threw me out."
"As one might expect they would."
       "Why did you do it?"
       "Because you were underage."
       "I was doing fine."
"You were making a fool of yourself," I said. "On top of that,
sooner or later you were going to get in that cage with the
wrong opponent. And then, you were going to get hurt."
We stared at each other for a moment, which gave me a chance to
appreciate just how angry she was.
"Why didn't you just come to me, instead of ratting me out?"
"What could I have said to you that would have made you stop?"
"Nothing. But you could have offered me a chance back then.
You could have tried to help, if you were so worried."
       I shook my head steadily.
       "I can't help you until I sign you," I said, "and I couldn't
sign you when I knew you were underage."
She folded her arms and stewed.
"I was doing fine," she mumbled again.
       "We obviously disagree on that."
She continued to maintain her defiant pose, but I thought I saw
the ice starting to thaw ever-so-slightly.
I decided to wait her out.
"So, what now?" she said after a few moments of silence.
I picked up a piece of paper from in front of me, spun it so it
faced her and pushed it across the desk.
       "It's a five fight deal," I said. "You'll have a chance to
train here and work with our staff. You'll also get to work
       with the other RSI members."
She gave me nothing in response, which was better than giving me
       attitude.
"After the fifth fight, if you don't feel it's working, you can
       go wherever you want."
The break in the attitude proved only temporary, as her response
was more posing, then some grumbling, a disgruntled eye roll
       then an exasperated sigh.
I thought about telling her that if she rolled her eyes at me
again, I was going to roll that pretty little head of hers right
       down on the floor.
It would have been fun to see her reaction, but I failed to see
how it would help me accomplish my goal.
After an excruciating eternity, she leaned forward.
"Do you have a pen?" she said, the attitude still present.
I clenched my fist unseen behind the desk, then unclenched it
and dug a pen out of my drawer.
"So, when do I start?" she asked as she finished signing.
"You have your stuff with you?"
       "Yeah."
"Then you start today. Get your things and get changed, and
I'll have Steph McMahon meet you in the locker room."
She started to get out of the chair.
"Allow me to warn you in advance," I said. "Take a few minutes
and make sure you're ready to take a more positive approach to
all of this before you go the locker room. Because if you flash
this kind of attitude with Steph, there's a good chance they'll
       never find your body."
She searched my face for some sign that I was kidding. Anyone
who knows Steph could tell her that I wasn't.
Eventually, she gave a slight nod, then left to retrieve her
things. I called Steph and let her know about our new signing.
It was hard to discern from the tone of her voice, but I could
       just tell she was thrilled.
I no sooner hung up when 'guess who' arrived.
"Did you just refer to her as 'young lady?'" Danni Harris asked.
"So, you heard my father's ghost, too?" I said. "I was worried
       I was going crazy."
"I heard it," she said. "Doesn't mean you're not going crazy."
       I shrugged dismissively.
She stepped deeper into the office and took a seat in the chair
       Olivia had just vacated.
       "I take it she signed?"
       "Grudgingly," I said.
       "She know you blocked her?"
       "Uh, no," I said.
The reason Olivia didn't receive any attention from the other
stables is because I had made it known that I had a special
interest in signing her. That would include matching any offer
       she received elsewhere.
Miss Holt was a totally unproven commodity, and no one had any
desire to get into a bidding war over her.
Somehow, this didn't seem like the time to share that little
nugget of information with her, though.
"She's gonna be p*ssed when she finds out."
       I gave another little shrug.
"Not if we teach her how to win, first."
Danni heard something in my voice. She canted her head and cast
       me a knowing look.
"What is it with this one?"
I tapped my thumb on my desk as I worked on my response.
"She faked her birth certificate," I said, "just so she could
get in the cage a few months sooner."
       Danni smiled broadly.
       "Sensing a kindred spirit, huh?"
       I shrugged again.
       "Maybe."

Brilliant! What an attitude! You've got a firecracker on your
       hands there. Good luck. :D
Looking forward to more, as always. I love what you've done with
       Olivia's story. :)

Thank you, as always, sir. I do appreciate the feedback. ;)
I don't know exactly where Olivia's story is headed, but this
little beginning was too good to pass up. I started thinking
about it late last year... when I actually did "turn her in" for
       being too young. :P
We'll see if that attitude of hers calms down with time. She'll
probably settle down some, but I'm betting she's never going to
lose that edge she's got going. ;D

Haha, that actually was you! Talk about art immitating life. Or,
       whichever way that goes...
I don't care where the story is headed, I know it will be a good
one. Full faith with you at the helm. As for that attitude,
maybe more time with Steph and Danni, less time with Emma or
Leesh. But, I don't need to tell you that. Hey, I can always
send Olga over to babysit if she gets out of line. :P Or, if
Olga gets out of line. Could be good punishment for both. Of
course, I actually have to locate Olga first...

Why does that sound more like punishment for ME? :P
Of course, I could just hand her over to Steph. THAT would be
       entertaining, for sure. :o

       Haha!
I don't even know who we're trying to punish anymore. :D
But yes... you could probably sell tickets to that...
