Roommates
By: Nera Quinn Date: July 25, 2017, 8:44 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
The Mage didn't have much to her name. She traveled light and
was always ready to pick up and go at a moment's notice. So,
there weren't many belongings to take up room in the closet, to
clutter the bathroom sink or shower or to spill out in as mess
in the house she would be sharing. The girl wondered what her
rookie would be like, but the cynicism of her mind pretty much
chalked it up as likely an already lost cause. Easier to assume
someone was a jerk. They couldn't hurt you then.

Finally stumbling upon the address of the house he was supposed
to call home for her time at Umbral Dawn, the angel stopped with
a light sigh. She was unsure how she had gotten so turned
around looking for the place. She would have to blame her
insistence on finding the bookstore prior to finding her
lodgings.
As she approached the door, the feeling of butterflies filled
her stomach. She had never had a roommate before. Her parents
had suggest a single house, but she had abjectly refused. She
had left home to have new experiences and that wouldn't be the
case of they were still dictating her choices. She was sure
they were imagining the worst, and part of her took pleasure in
that.
Carefully she pushed opn the front door. Her belongings should
have arrived already, but had her roommate? She called out
softly. "Hello? Is anyone here?"

A voice came from deeper in the house. "Yo.
Looking at the kitchen and thinking about the fact that I am
probably never going to actually use it." A redhead with
platinum streaks through her hair came around the corner, style
very Goth rock, and an unlit clove hanging out of her mouth. Her
hair flew loose around her as she slouched into the room.
Intense blue eyes found Lyra, moved over her, an eyebrow
raising. "So, what flavor are you and what's
your name? It's always easier to guess what kind of asshole
someone might be once I know what they are." Hands in her
pockets, the rebellious young woman shrugged.
"I'm Nera, by the way. Nera Quinn."

At the sound of the voice the angel peered deeper into the
house. The young woman who came around the corner got just the
faintest hint of a raised eyebrow. Not out of judgement but out
of curiosity. She'd never met anyone with such a unique air
about them.
Lyra's hair was pulled back from her face, her own bright blue
eyes prominent. A simple pair of jeans and a loose off the
shoulder top of lavender was her first impression to the other
girl. At the introduction she gave a small bow forward of her
head. "Lyra Arundel. I assume by flavor you want
to know that I am of the Celestial Descent.". She said
this and fiddled with her necklace letting a sort of after image
of her wings appear. She smiled lightly almost as if teasing
herself. "I may aim to come off as of little as an
asshole as I can. And you?". A simple question back,
pure curiosity as to whom she would be sharing the space with.

That brow stayed raised, while the eyes turned amused. She
tapped her cigarette with a finger and lit it with no more than
a touch. She blew out the smoke in a stream and snorted softly.
."I'm a smart-ass, but an honest one. And I
tend to be an intelligent asshole. Which, in my experience is
better than being a brainless or narrow-minded one. Don't know,
you'll have to let me know. As to my flavor? Vanilla human mage.
Fire starter. Apprentice occultist. Psychology major. You? Oh,
and I don't have any annoying family, so anyone claiming
otherwise? Creepy stalker type."
With an air of barely contained energy, Nera moved around the
room, opening the windows and letting in the fresh air.
"So, you're an Angel? What's that like? What
kind of expectations have you had?"

Lyra smiled wryly at her explanation of herself before letting
out a soft almost musical laugh. "Well I have to
say. I'd much rather be around someone willing to be honest,
how sharp the honesty aside. There are enough people lying
through smiling faces everywhere and honestly I tire of dealing
with that.". Honesty was apparent in her words,
something somewhere had imprinted that view on her.
"I wouldn't have called human mage vanilla, it
sounds like an interesting mix and psychology huh? I have an
affinity for music magics and healing. Can't even claim to be a
unique angel can I?". She laughed softly with an air of
self deprication at herself as she shook her head and leaned
against the wall.
"As for what being an Angel is like, there does tend
to be an air of expectation. There is a care for social status
that I will never quite understand. The family isn't upper
echelon but is far from the bottom. Properness and etiquette
have a tendency to be stressed, and you don't usually stray far
from the family path.". She paused wove her hand into
her golden locks. "Unfortunately for mom and dad
who sent me here for Celestial studies, I've got a knack and
interest in particle physics and quantum mechanics. Angelic
history is stuffy and boring.". She smiled again.
"And you? Does no annoying family mean you've had a
more free experience?"

Nera turned her head to look at Lyra with a hint of bemusement
in her expression. Dryly, she replied, "Yeah, angel face. You
could say I've had a more free experience. Foster parents don't
give a shit what you do, so long as you don't get caught and
find trouble. Doubly so for a firestarter with an attitude
problem and weird scars." Nera flashed the scarification on her
hands, the gold chain glittering over her palms and around her
wrists. "I made sure I got what I needed without having to ask
the adults around me. I'm no Oliver Twist." Some small flash of
envy lit itself in Nera's chest, some little imp that had always
wanted to know what it was to belong to a family and be cared
for. It was no sooner lit than extinguished by the shadow of a
deliberate malice. Kid, they would be afraid of you, too...
A toss of the young Mage's head scoured out the voice, and the
girl posed her next question to the angel. "So, what do you get
into? What do you do for fun? What kinda shit do you do with
particle physics and quantum mechanics? You must have some brain
in your head, huh? I'm clever and smart, but that physics shit
fucks me all up."

A tinge of pink crept into the angel's cheeks as the mage made
clearer her "free" experience. Rubbing the back of her head she
flashed her eyes downward for a moment. "I'm sorry. I didn't
mean to assume or pry." The scars on her hands caught Lyra's
attention, the healer that the girl was. Unconsciously her
hands worked through a few motions. One could assume it to be a
nervous or idle tick, but there was more to it than that. With
the right talisman activated there were many of her healing
spells that took intricate hand motions.
At the following questions a thoughtful smile played on the
angels face. "Hmmm.....well I will admit to being a bit of a
bookworm. I like to spend time in bookstores or libraries. I
know however, that there are many more experiences I am looking
to have now that I can make a few more choices. I'd love to
actually get a chance to let my hair down per-say. As for
physics, well, I've always been interested in how the world
works and how it came to be. And despite my heritage, I'm
pretty sure I'll find more answers this way. There is something
fascinating to me that at some level things become more energy
wise than the sum of their parts." She laughed softly and
tilted her head. "And I'm pretty sure I'm not great with
interpreting the mind, so Psychology seems daunting to me. What
drew you to that?"

Nera leaned against the window sill and studied her new
roommate, blowing smoke out in a smooth stream before she
answered. "No worries, angel face. Most people don't expect the
orphan aspect. I'm like a horrible cliche. But it's let me
explore what I can do. Both mage-wise and life-wise. I hope
there are people who play cards and shoot pool. I'm a shark.
Makes good money."
The Mage laughed softly as Lyra spoke of what she enjoyed. It
wasn't mocking or rude. "I have some of those interests. I like
music. And books are where I learn how to do the stuff I do. But
physics is out of my reach. But if you want to explain it, I'm
not hard to teach." Nera's head fell to the side and her
expression turned thoughtful. "Psychology helped me understand
certain things about others and my own brain. And certain magics
work better if you can encourage certain emotions or mind
spaces. Psychology aids that. Ever wanted to learn?"

The angel gave a soft smile as her assumption was forgiven, or
at least waved aside. "Cliche or not at least it
offers you the ability to make your own path. And I am sure
there are those around who play cards and pool. This is a
university campus is it not.. She had a sparkle of
amusement in her eyes as she thought of things that might take
place on campus or off.
At the mention of music the angels face lit up. Eyes bright and
focused. "Books and music? Making music or
listening?". She posed the question with honest
curiosity. "I certainly wouldn't be opposed to
teaching a bit of physics if you are interested, and I would
love to learn more about psychology. I've heard of emotions and
mind states affecting magic, but have never delved into that
realm."
