       opinions on a new project
       By: gords1001 Date: June 26, 2013, 2:16 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
I've been tasked with building up a moderately impressive
       thrower by a blf member.
Following on from djozz's excellent torture thread
  HTML http://budgetlightforum.com/node/22570
along with tom e's results on the tn31, I'm feeling the urge to
push the boat out a little......
I intend to use a convoy l2 (because I already have one and it's
       being the guinea pig)
  HTML http://www.fasttech.com/products/0/10002463/1277301-convoy-l2-diy-led-flashlight-host
       this driver
  HTML http://www.lck-led.com/5000ma-driver-modes-p-935.html?cPath=37_135
and either an xm-l2 u2 or xp-g2 r5, dedomed and on a noctigon
star, I intend to get a lux meter because I'm in need of
       recordable results now.
So, I need to get the guy two good 26650 cells, protected, I'm
sure trustfire flames will easily do 2.5a each but I worry about
them matching, anyone any suggestions there? And for fun,
anyone fancy a guess on which will throw better and which I end
up going for? I'm building up two lights so I can do back to
back comparisons, I personally like the xp-g2 but dedomed it may
become a real laser beam, I suspect the xm-l2 u2 will give the
       more usable beam.
I will do a small giveaway for the pick of the correct guess on
what I end up choosing. giveaway closes when I post up the
results and build log. I do invite as much conversation as
possible on this because I really dont know how it'll go yet.

Have fun with your build gords. I'd build the two lights up the
same with your favoured XP-G2 and run with a 3 amp driver and
one with the 5 amp driver for a comparison. I dont reckon the 5
amp driver will put out 3 amps on medium. With your new light
meter you will have a whole gammet of amps covered with lots off
useful info. I use both the Trustfire protected and King Kong
unprotected and never had an issue. I do not let them run tight
down though. Lately I've been using FT Trustfires as there
cheap. I had one that measured zero voltage but they replaced it
ok. They test the same as what HKJ gets with capacity.

mine already runs 3a but with an alu board and nw emitter. I
like it, I like it a lot, but it was a proof of concept, the
idea was always to end up on copper and driven dammed hard.
I'm going to dedome both an xm-l2 u2 and xp-g2 r5 cw, and see
which one I prefer and which pne the owner prefers, none will
be wasted as I have my c8 xp-g2 project to fullfill as well, I
got my first full wage slip in the new job and it is good,
unfortunately james destroyed mrs gords phone yesterday so my
drill press budget just got smashed >:(

Is there any downside to dedoming? I'm assuming Cree puts the
dome on for a reason - just wondering.
Please post lots of pics so those of us with less
       knowledge/experience can follow along. :P

I'm betting that Graham goes with an XM-L2 :) good luck on the
built Graham! I'm looking forward to this one being the
       throwaholic I am :o

In my book there is a downside to dedoming. Me. I'm hopeless at
it. Out of about half a dozen I've tried only an XP-G2 worked
and one XM-L that works has horrible shadows in it. So no more
       for me.

I've not tried dedoming yet, I have some t6's to try but I
believe the petrol method is the way forward.
I will take plenty of photos, check out one of my other build
       threads for an idea.
What I decide on will be down to how much of a laser beam the
dedome makes tbh, as I say though there are other lights I want
to experiment with so the dedomed emitters wont be wasted.

Gords, I know you are over the pond, but get a XM-L2 TN31, order
       the $1 resistor from DigiKey, de-dome the stock XM-L2 U2 1C,
beef up the wires, use high qual thermal grease under the star,
apply the resistor mod, and you got 347 kcd at the min, 375 kcd
maybe in reality. AlexGT did all the upfront work. I got the
XM-L2 TN31 from -JOE- for $135 shipped, so maybe $145 worst case
       total cost?
Ohh - forgot the strap wrenches if you don't have them to open
her up - she doesn't give herself up easily, but fun once your
       inside... ;)

I'm a sic, sic boy, well, dirty old man...
Gords - definitely experiment with the de-doming first. I did it
on XML T6's because I literally have piles of them laying
around. The gas method is soooo easy.
       Here's beamshots, including the TN31 mod'ed:
