Heather's Story

So, you always hear those stories about first love, but there
are a lot of lessons to be learned from them. I’ve learned so
much from the mistakes I’ve made in my life, and I’m able to
grow as a person, and reach out to others and help them choose
the right path.
Life for me was pretty normal, up until about the end of my 9th
grade year. That’s when I first got with my first serious
boyfriend, Mike. It was kind of an expected thing, we had been
spending a lot of time together up before then, and it just
seemed like we belonged with each other. So, it happened on June
6th, 2005. We were pretty much glued at the hip for the entire
relationship, or so it seemed. I remember going to spend the day
with a friend, up at Waldameer amusement park, which was about 2
hours away from where I was living. Mike stayed back, said he
was going to spend time with his brother that day.
So, that was fine, I spent the day with my friend, and went home
that evening. My friend spent the night with me, and when he
went to bed, I jumped on my computer, and browsed the web a bit.
All of a sudden, a message from a girl in my class pops up on
the screen asking me for my boyfriends number. I asked her why
she needed it, and her reply was simply “Well, he’s my
boyfriend.” Which just kind of struck me weird. And I had to
reread it. I told her that wasn’t possible, and that he and I
had been together almost 2 months at this point. It was pretty
late that night, so I waited until the next day to confront Mike
about this.
I showed up on his doorstep the next afternoon, obviously angry.
I threw the accusations in his face, which he tried to deny.
After about 5 minutes of him trying to deny everything to me, I
then showed him the conversation I had printed out, and he knew
he had been caught. I broke down into tears, and somehow he
managed to talk me into staying with him.
So our relationship went on, and things never got back to
normal. He cheated about 3 or 4 more times, but for some reason
I stuck around. I guess I thought I was in love with him. I had
given him everything you could get in a relationship. He was my
first everything. He meant so much to me. Friends had told me he
was no good, but for some reason I never listened to them. It’s
like I was blind and deaf to reality.
In May of 2006, Mike and I started hanging out with his friend
down the street, Dan. Dan was a nice guy, but he was stupid when
it came to relationships, especially the one he was in .He saw
what I was going through though, and offered to hang out with me
alone one day. I accepted, thinking nothing of it. So I went to
his house without Mike. Mike decided to spend that day with his
family, which was fine. So I went to Dan’s and we got to
talking, and somehow he had managed to talk me into leaving
Mike. He showed me to be strong, which I wasn’t at all.
After leaving Mike, Dan and I started seeing each other. But for
some reason I couldn’t keep myself away from Mike, and it led to
about a year or so of me cheating on Dan with Mike. I would go
home at night, and Mike would come over, and things would
happen. I don’t know what caused me to do it, but I couldn’t
stop. It ended with me getting a reputation as a slut, which is
true. I turned into a giant one. I had no remorse for what I did
to Dan. We have an abusive relationship, in both directions. We
were both incredibly emotionally abusive towards each other. Not
a day passed where we wouldn’t fight until I was in tears. I
felt like I had to get away. We would break up for days at a
time, and then get back together. Probably the most unhealthy
relationship I’ve ever been in.
We broke up in January of 2008. It seemed like it was going to
be for good. I got a new boyfriend, Brent. Dan got a new
girlfriend, Stephanie. Brent had no issues being nice to me, and
then instantly changing, and treating me like dirt. He broke up
with me quite a few times, and I kept going back for more. We
had made plans to go to prom together, and then he broke up with
me a few weeks before prom, and it was for good. So I started
seeing Mike and Dan again, and Dan starting cheating on Steph
with me, and Mike and I had been sleeping together. I was back
to my old ways, and hating myself for it. Dan and Stephanie
ended up breaking up, and so Dan and I went to my senior prom
together. We ended up getting back together, but this time it
only lasted a couple months.
While Dan and I were still together, we started hanging out with
his best friend Scott, and Scott’s girlfriend, Lindsey. Scott
and Lindsey ended up breaking up, so we were just hanging out
with Scott at this point. Well Scott and I started getting
close, so we would hang out without Dan around, since Dan worked
overnight at K-mart, it worked out for us. Dan and I ended up
breaking up, and Scott and I ended up together, which is still
going on, 2 years going strong. He has made me realize to love
someone, you have to let go of the pain others have caused you.
I was able to let go of all of the pain I had bottled up inside,
and Scott was patient with me during it. It seemed as if he
understood how much it hurt, and that I’m was emotionally
unstable.
Scott has become one of my best friends, and I honestly don’t
know where I would be without him. The experiences I’ve been
through in my life, have showed me what it’s like to be on both
sides of a cheating/abusive relationship. I’ve learned that I
never want to put someone through that ever again, because I
understand how much it hurts and how much it damages you. I’ve
worked through my trust issues, and have become a stronger
person for it. I hope to be able to help others become strong
and make it through their obstacles in their lives. I feel as if
helping people is my passion and calling in life, and if I can
help one person feel better about their situation, I must be
doing something right.
