Technology and Research Points

Technology and Research Points
How to Acquire the Bigger Stick
Each technology costs so many Research Points (RP). These
represent the amount of brainpower your country can put to use
in discovering and inventing things.
RP acts much like CU, you get some of it every cycle.
Your baseline RP per cycle is 1% of your population (this can be
increased by buildings). Of course, this would mean that you'd
normally be earning around 1,000,000 RP per cycle! To keep the
numbers small, we can use regular SI prefixes for RP, so one
million RP would just equal 1000kRP (kilo-Research Points).
1000 kRP would equal 1 MRP (Mega-Research Point)
Simple and scientific!
To research a technology, first pick a technology to research.
Then, every cycle, you can (and must!) dump all of the RP that
you generated that cycle into that technology.
Once the RP invested in that technology hits that technology's
RP cost, it will be researched.
Overlapping RP (say you put 10 RP into a 9 RP technology)
carries over to the next cycle. However, if you don't start
researching a new technology that cycle, the RP stored will be
lost.
So, if you still don't understand, here's a quick example:
Fire - 20 kRP
Stick (Requires Fire) - 100 kRP
Club (Requires Stick) - 500 kRP
If your population is 9 000 000, you get 90 kRP per cycle. So,
you decide to research Fire.
Cycle 1 ends, and you've finished researching Fire. However, you
have 70 kRP left over. You can either waste all of it, or dump
it into the next cycle's tech. So you choose to research Stick.
Next cycle complete, you've researched Stick, and now have 60
kRP left over.
Now, sticks aren't great, so you want to research the Club.
You set it as your research target, and dump the extra 60 kRP
into it. A cycle passes, and it has 150 kRP in it (still not
done). Another cycle, it has 240 kRP (still not done). So a few
more cycles pass, and eventually it has 510 kRP, and you finish
researching Club with 10 kRP left over.
You don't have anything left to research, so you wait one cycle.
The spare kRP, unused, is wasted and can't be gotten back.
Sharing Technology and Collaboration
You can share any technology you own with another country, which
gives them a 50% discount when researching that technology.
For collaborative technology-getting, the group pays RP pretty
much the same as above. One country would have 1.0x the tech
cost, two countries would have 1.5x the tech cost, three
countries would have 2.0x the tech cost and so on.
All countries must be able to trade with the other countries
involved and must all have the same technology targeted. If any
country drops out of the collaboration, then the total cost
remains the same, but the other members have to foot the bill.
You can't add countries to a collaborative research once
started.

When researching a technology with more than 1 other tech
leading to it do you need to research both of the tech before
it, or are they just two different options of getting there?

You have to research all the things going into it.
