Elections in Kratiras!

The season of election has begun in the Grand Republic following
the untimely death of our great Archon Ioannes Arsenikos. As is
per tradition, the eldest and most prestigious members of each
of the five Council Dynasties will present themselves for
campaigning in the capital and various major cities. With
incredibly heated competition, it is expected that the elections
may even last for the most part of a year.
The Candidates
Theodoros Arsenikos
The 45-year-old brother of our recently-deceased Archon,
Theodoros stands for the same ideals as his predecessor -- the
importance of international trade, an active yet reserved
diplomatic policy, and a tough stance towards the potential
spread of communism. He currently enjoys a modest lead in
popularity over other candidates.
Alexios Bryennios
Even at sixty years old, Bryennios is an energetic militarist
with the outlined goal of modernizing and improving upon the
nation's army and military technologies, which have remained
somewhat stagnant for the last few years. He advocates taking an
increased role in international affairs.
Nikephoros Melissenos
Nikephoros, aged fifty-six, hopes to gain a victory by appealing
to Kratiran nationalism. He proposes the nationalization of
various key economic industries, such as railroads and coal
mining, and the establishment of an outright hostile stance
against the Rocinate Commune.
Michael Synadenos
Synadenos, at the age of sixty-three, retired from a position as
one of the nation's top scientists to run for his family's
position in the race. He advocates a shift of national values
towards education and scientific progress, outlining plans for
the establishment of a space program to compete with nations
such as the Republic of Kelstrom. He is neutral in matters of
international diplomacy.
David Arionites
Arionites is an interesting figure in the race. He is fifty-two
years old, and seeks to win the elections by campaigning not in
the busy capital or other large coastal cities but in the
countryside. While the inland of the nation technically contains
a larger population than the cities, the population density is
low enough, and the people apathetic enough, that most
candidates do not make an attempt. Arionites advocates himself
as a peoples' man, proposing the establishment of several
radical reforms aimed at limiting the "corruptions of the free
market" and providing government-sponsored welfare to the poor.
He also suggests a normalization of relations with the Rocinate
Commune.

In a close, somewhat surprising victory, Alexios Bryennios has
managed to pull out a slight majority over Theodoros Arsenkios
to claim the title of Archon! The election was a difficult race
for all parties involved, with candidates slowly dropping out
and lending support to others as it became clear that they could
not win. In the end, though, Bryennios achieved a six-percent
victory over Arsenikos, and was sworn in today after a short
ceremony.
It is expected that the cause for Bryennios' jump in popularity
is the ongoing civil war in Eurania, an event that has driven
the population further in support of militarist policies.
