History:
Approximately -3300 AC (~3500 BCE): Old Āstri
(OH-stree) founded
It is not certain where the original Āstrians came from, but
most historians and archaeologists agree that they were probably
hunter-gatherers that arrived in the region from the east, most
likely following the migrations of whatever animal that they
hunted. They already had technologies for fishing, and
apparently developed animal husbandry after settling.
Approximately -3200 AC (~3400 BCE): Thikda (THICK-duh) founded
Founded at roughly the same time as old Āstri, the Thikdians
likely came from the same place. However, they were farther
inland than the people at Āstri and had diets primarily made up
of large terrestrial mammals, especially the great Northeast
Moose, which they hunted with the assistance of a breed of dogs,
the descendants of whom are now known as Thikdian Moosehounds.
Approximately -3150 AC (~3350 BCE): Āstri-Thikdian War
Soon after the establishing of old Āstri and Thikda, they met
and began hostilities. It is generally agreed upon that there
was a short (Roughly 25 years) period during which the two
groups had no tensions and actually engaged in trade.
Approximately -3000 AC (~3200 BCE): Subsidence of Āstri-Thikdian
hostilities
As the conflict between the two clans continued, both groups
began to tire of the war and eventually stopped their fighting
altogether. Despite the anger at each other during the war, the
two warrior clans got along rather nicely.
Approximately -2950 AC (~3150 BCE): Start of the Astroth Bronze
Age
An ancient bronze spearhead was found dating to this time period
Approximately -2900 (~3100 BCE): Foundations of nearby clans
During the next 200 years the clans of Migh, Dak, Segdan, Grist,
Egda, Zhiis, Krigda, Dhek, Rido, and Iberra were founded, with
no open warfare until the arrivals of the first two Great Sages.
Approximately -2000 (~2200 BCE): Beginning of the Astroth Iron
Age
A trove of iron weapons and armor was found dating to this
period.
Approximately -1900 (~2100 BCE): Old Southern War
A great war between the south clans started at this date. Very
little is known about the war, including its cause.
-200 (448 BCE): Beginning of the Astroth Sage Age
This date is marked as the start of the age in which the
majority of the Great Sages lived and died.
-178 AC (426 BCE): Arrival of Rhiis the Wise
From the cold mountains north of Segdan came Rhiis the Wise. He
founded the philosophy/religion Rhyzhism. Ryzhism is focused on
tradition as well as the god Alrwtum (ALL-roo-tum).
Rhiis came from some place in the northern mountains of Nisi
Quentiam. He is suspected to have traveled east, along the
mountain range, before going south into Segdan. This was during
the War of Balance taking place in Nisi Quentiam.
-168 AC (416 BCE): Arrival of Helroth of the Blade in Egda
Originating from Krigda in the south, Helroth was a
warrior-shaman, who spread an anarchist and sadistic message
northward. His religion/philosophy is known as Helrozhism and
his followers as Helrozhians. They worshipped the god Morkee’an.
-147 AC (395 BCE): Death of Rhiis the Wise
While traveling through Egdan lands, Rhiis and the group he was
traveling with were raided and killed by Helrozhian members of
the Egdan Clan. This sparked outrage from the all of the
northern clans.
-147 AC (395 BCE): Death of Helroth of the Blade
Helroth of the Blade died at this time, in the same year as
Rhiis the Wise. It is not known when exactly he died, but many
religious people believe he died at the exact same time as
Rhiis.
-146 AC (394 BCE): First Rhizhian War
After Rhiis’s death, the Six Northern clans (Migh, Segdan, Dak,
Āstri, Thikda, and Grist) united under Iskroth the Tall, the
chief of Āstri. He led a campaign into Egdan and was able to
successfully subjugate the clan, as well as drive the
Helrozhians to the south into Zhiis.
-138 AC (386 BCE): Second Rhizhian War
After the defeat of the Helrozhians in Egda, the clans of the
south (Zhiis, Krigda, Dhek, Rido, and Iberra) united under the
banner of Mori’an the Dark, a militaristic chief from Krigda.
They made a surprise attack and were able to take over Egda
before the Rhizians could even react. However, they were unable
to spread further, despite continued efforts for the next
hundred years.
-52 AC (300 BCE): Subsidence of Rhizhian-Helrozhian hostilities
Despite remaining adamantly divided, the clans eventually ceased
attack each other. The alliances began a pre-medieval arms race,
between six Rhizhian clans (Migh, Segdan, Dak, Āstri, Thikda,
and Grist) and the six Helrozhian clas (Egda, Zhiis, Krigda,
Dhek, Rido, and Iberra). Despite their constant building of
weapons, both clans remained equally strong.
0 AC (248 BCE): Beginning of the Age of Entropy
This year was that of the birth of the great sage Waag. It is
used as year zero in the Astroth Calendar (AC) and is also
marked as the first date in the Age of Entropy.
Waag was born on the border of the alliances, between Grist and
Zhiis. His mother was from Grist, a Rhizhian clan, and his
father from Zhiis, a Helrozhian.
33 AC (215 BCE): Waag the Sage and his followers begin the
‘March of the Ten Thousand’
Waag the Sage begin to walk between the border of the Rhizhian
and Helrozhian alliances, spreading his message about unity. He
began the walk with only himself and ended up with an entourage
of over 10000 men.
34 AC (216 BCE): War of Entropy
Waag and his 10,000 men marched to the main fortresses along the
border of each alliance. He first went to the Rhizhian fortress,
in which resided the Rhizhian leader, Zeth, and commanded him to
unify with the Helrozhians. When Zeth refused, Waag quickly
defeated his forces in an impressive surprise attack.
He then marched across the border on the Helrozhian side, where
Krigeloc, the leader of the Helrozhians, resided. Krigeloc was
unaware of his adversary’s defeat, and Waag went to him and
demanded to him as well that they unify. When Krigeloc refused,
Waag similarly attacked and subjugated him. Many of the soldiers
he fought, Rhizhian and Helrozhian alike, admired him, seeing
his wisdom and bravery.
These soldiers, as well as many peasants, weary of the war,
joined his cause. With his newfound strength, as well as having
the leaders of both alliances hostage, Waag was able to scare
each side into joining.
It was that day that the nation of Astroth was formed. Despite
the alliances unifying under Waag, they were each separated into
clans. Now the clans are called provinces, and they each have
their own laws and societies.
The people of both alliances looked up to Waag, but still they
hated each other with a passion. Waag was, however, able to
subvert this by sharing his views on the two religions. His
philosophy was considered radical, and possibly insane, by many
people at that time, but became the primary religion a mere 100
years later.
His shared his belief that the both Alrwtum and Morkee’an were
real gods, and that a third god, Bu’erdan, kept the balance
between the two. He called his religion Bu’erdhism.
200 AC (48 BCE): Beginning of the First Peace Era
A 300 year long period of no conflict in Astroth begins.
500 AC (252 CE): Beginning of the First Era of Discontent
With all the lack of action, the Astrothian economy, society,
and infrastructure become stagnant, and riots begin to break
out.
548 AC (200 CE): The great fire of Āstri
After an especially bad riot, the city of old Āstri falls to
ashes amidst a great fire. A new city just outside the ruins
begins to be built.
600 AC (352 CE): Re-Founding of Āstri
The new city of Āstri is finished, and dedicated to the memory
of Waag the Sage.
600 AC (352 CE): Beginning of the Second Peace Era
The beginning of a new era of peace.
2193 AC (1945 CE): Beginning of the Modern Era
This date is merely last time that a new era has been marked.
2194 AC (1946 CE): Annexation of Midland Islands
The islands off the coast of the continent, previously owned by
Midland, were annexed into Astroth.
