Ahh...house Tully! This has become a favorite of mine!
The first thing you should spend your silver on is upgrading
your counting house. Get it up to at least level 15. Don't buy
anything else until this is done. All good things come from
silver. Keep upgrading that thing until level 20. That is the
first building you want to max out. Send your swords out to
adventure until you're on your last action of the day, then send
them all out to barter Winnie! :-)
Next priority is the village center. You want this upgraded to
at least level 10 so you can make everything and create all the
lovely gear for your swords. If you are going to spend gold,
the village center and counting houses are good places to start.
5 gold each, and you'll never be sorry!
Next is the market, because you are a Tully and need that stuff
       to make your swords better!
To answer another question, sometimes your swords lose because
of the dice roll. I can not tell you the amount of times I have
had 1-95 to win, and the dice rolls a 96. It happens more than
it should, in my opinion! So I often do the lower level
adventures making sure I have at least a 3:1 advantage. Send
your merchant army out to barter, and they should return happier
and better trained than when they left.
However, you can help your swords by wearing the best gear you
can find and afford on your main character, and make sure it
increases the trade abilities. Upgrade up from the topaz ring
to the ruby wing (or whichever gives more to trade) when you
can. One hint I'll give you is that the level 9 adventure (tax
the small folk) is the earliest and best camp to get a few trade
items for your merchants. The drop rate is low so you'll have
to do it a bunch of times, but the but the wallet adds 3% to
barters and you can use that for your troops until you can craft
enough ledger books. The best cheap unit is the peddler, made
in the stables that adds +1, and 1% for both barter and swindle.
Merchants (made in the market) give the same thing, but are
very expensive to make. Use them to make mercers and your Tully
troops will be the best traders anywhere.
When you spend your talents, upgrade "Harvest" until its full.
It speeds your resource production from your house and village
center by 15% making it one of the best speed upgrades in the
game. Also make sure to upgrade as many barter talents as you
can (levels 0, 20, 30, 40 and 60). By the time you reach level
60, you will have spent 57 talent points to make your the most
       powerful traders in Westros.
As far as AvA, since we're not upgrading so much, you should be
building your house more. Keep your troops adventuring as much
as you can, and they will train up nicely. Keep training them
to barter. You'll need your trade items for your troops, but
save your battle and intrigue items for future donations. By
the time next AvA comes, you should be at about level 100 and
yours will be among the most valuable troops in our alliance.
Bartering is the most common action in this game and no one does
it better than the Tullys. They are the only house in the game
that can bring home silver, spoils and Victory Points without
shedding a drop of blood from either side. Tully troops are
       always busy and always welcome.
You picked a great house for our alliance! All you need to do
       now is grow into it.

All about PtP, but I see I might have to add more to it to cover
things you might want to initiate:
