You start off pretty basic with a short sword, leather armor and
maybe a militia if you're lucky and you want some better stuff?
what's the best way to get better stuff?
If you have lots of gold, the shop offers some pretty awesome
gear, but not everything is valued equally well. Let's start
with the gold standard of all gear, which is the Ancestral
Valyrian Steel Greatsword. This is one of the most expensive
things in the shop but it offers the greatest value of the
combination of attacks, defense and overall stats. This is the
sort of gear you want on your character: something that benefits
everyone all the time. You can not craft one of these things,
but the obsidian dagger comes pretty close and you get that
after you win 400 PtP attacks as a bonus prize at the end of
       book 1. That's a lot of work! Instead of the 25/25/25 x 7%,
you get 20/20/20 x 5% but it's one of the best things you can
get for free. So your book is a good source of good gear.
Most hand items offer bonuses only for attacks. A select few
offer a % bonus for only defense like a parrying blade or
partisan. The obsidian dagger and the Valyrian Greatsword offer
% bonuses on BOTH which makes them great weapons. It's
difficult to craft an item that does both, but it CAN happen and
sometimes when you least expect it. On rare occasions you get
something that is awesome that is worth posting a picture of,
such as my Shield of the Stag. I was making wooden shields for
AvA camp donations and one day I got this awesome hand-held item
offering a whopping 10% to both offense and defense in fight! I
added a blacksmith's seal to the open slot and added a 25%
chance to add an extra 8% to fight attack or defense, turning
       that +11 into a potential +72. It's a great weapon for a
fighter, but not for my main character. Why? Because I do more
than fight. I barter, swindle, spy and steal too. So the rule
is to upgrade your character gear so it benefits you no matter
       what your swords do.
So you can get better gear by crafting, buying and through the
book. You will also see some great gear through some of the
boss quests, make them well-worth the effort to keep hitting
through those. If you haven't learned how to invite friends to
hit with you on these, please do. You'll be amazed at how fast
some of us slice our way through a bugger like Lord Roxton. In
book 3, in the chapter on the red wedding, that hidden chain
mail is a great defensive piece of fight gear.
Finally you can get good stuff through adventuring. Many of
these offer rare drops and probably the best is in book 2
adventures at level 80, where you can get crystal swords. The
drops are pretty rare, but if you quest enough times, you WILL
get one. I have about 5 of them, and I have not been overly
serious about stocking up on them, but several of my SS's have
       them and use them.
Another way to upgrade them is through the use of seals. Rare
and above gear and units will have one empty slot where you can
stick seals on that will give that weapon a special boost, such
as the seal I put on my stag sheild. Opening a second seal slot
using gold will make the weapon or unit permanent through
reincarnation. Things you buy for gold will have more open seal
       slots made for more upgrades.
The longer you play, the more chances you have for getting
       better and better items.
