Commenters call out the double-standard:
--- Quote ---
> Can the United States treat these people in need right now on
our borders with the same generosity that it has treated
Ukraine?
--- End Quote ---
On the other hand, look who's complaining:
--- Quote ---
> My Orthodox Jewish great-grandparents fled persecution in
Eastern Europe in the 1890s. They LEGALLY entered America via
Ellis Island. They brought documentation to prove who they
were. They learned English, applied for Social Security numbers
and made their own way. Great-grandpa worked as a bookbinder.
They never asked for anything. NOW illegals come with their
hands out, telling tales of their awful lives in their own
countries and their harrowing journey to the border while
wearing designer clothing and carrying cell phones with roaming
( who pays for that?).

Woke response:
--- Quote ---
> What about the land your parents stole from the palestinians.

I hate these kinds of people. Instead of campaigning to make
immigration easier for "people like him" (he actually shares
very little in common with the non-white non-Jewish migrants
lacking in his sort of privilege, but he would never admit
that), these kinds of people just say "I had it tough, so every
single future immigrant should be forced to go through what I
went through." And this isn't even limited to "white" people. I
see it all the time with conservative Hispanics who **** on
"illegals" and insist that they should do it the legal way.
These people are sellouts. Sucking up to "white" westerners
because they've centered too much of their identity around
having made it to the other side of the border.

This is why we need troops along the border: not to prevent
refugee crossings, but to protect the refugees from violence and
to kill on sight anyone seen initiating violence against
refugees.

> Texas Republicans propose state immigration police force
>
> AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Republican lawmakers in Texas are
proposing legislation that would make it a state felony to cross
the border from Mexico illegally and create a new border police
force that could deputize private citizens, the latest in the
state’s continued push to test the limits of the federal
government’s authority over immigration.
>
> Civil rights organizations, immigration advocates and
Democrats immediately decried the proposals, which began drawing
attention after Friday’s deadline for filing bills in Texas’
ongoing biennial legislative session.
>
> “I think the underlying fact that it is going to allow people
to question our being American in our border communities and
across Texas is unacceptable,” said Texas state Rep. Victoria
Neave Criado, chairwoman of the Mexican American Legislative
Caucus.
> ...
> The Republican proposals in the Texas Legislature would
continue pushing Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s massive, $4 billion
border mission known as Operation Lone Star. That has included
the governor heavily increasing patrols near the border with
Mexico, gridlocking traffic with increased commercial truck
inspections, and building more barriers along the international
boundary, echoing former President Donald Trump’s unfished
campaign promise.
> ...
> Bills filed this session would allow a newly created unit of
state police to arrest, detain and deter people crossing into
Texas illegally, construct more and maintain existing barriers
between Texas and Mexico and return immigrants to Mexico if they
are seen crossing into Texas.
>
> State border officers would serve at the direction of a chief,
who would be appointed by the governor. According to a draft
bill, which will have to pass reviews by both of the state’s
Republican-controlled legislative chambers before the end of
May, the chief will be able to employ licensed state and local
police officers to serve on the border force, as well as
“law-abiding citizens” without felony convictions.
>
> Private citizens employed by the force would be allowed to
participate in “unit operations and functions” and have the same
criminal and civil liability immunity on the job as the licensed
officers.
> ...
> Bay said the powers and immunity that would be conveyed to
private citizens serving on the proposed border force is unlike
anything seen in recent Texas history.
>
> “It is designed to create racial profiling,” Texas Democratic
Party Chairman Gilberto Hinojosa told The Associated Press on
Monday. “Something that is just horrendous.”

Comments remember Reagan:
--- Quote ---
> "I, in my own mind, have always thought of America as a place
in the divine scheme of things that was set aside as a promised
land. It was set here and the price of admission was very
simple: the means of selection was very simple as to how this
land should be populated. Any place in the world and any person
from those places; any person with the courage, with the desire
to tear up their roots, to strive for freedom, to attempt and
dare to live in a strange and foreign place, to travel halfway
across the world was welcome here." -- Ronald Reagan

--- Quote ---
> "The poet called Miss Liberty's torch 'the lamp beside the
golden door.' Well, that was the entrance to America, and it
still is.
>
> And now you really know why we're here tonight. The glistening
hope of that lamp is still ours. Every promise, every
opportunity, is still golden in this land. And through that
golden door our children can walk into tomorrow with the
knowledge that no one can be denied the promise that is America.
Her heart is full; her torch is still golden, her future bright.
She has arms big enough to comfort and strong enough to support,
for the strength in her arms is the strength of her people. She
will carry on in the '80s unafraid, unashamed, and unsurpassed.
In this springtime of hope, some lights seem eternal; America's
is."
> -- President Ronald Reagan, RNC, August 23, 1984

> "I've spoken of the shining city all my political life…. And
how stands the city on this winter night? … After 200 years, two
centuries, she still stands strong and true to the granite
ridge, and her glow has held no matter what storm. And she's
still a beacon, still a magnet for all who must have freedom,
for all the pilgrims from all the lost places who are hurtling
through the darkness, toward home."

Venezuelans say crisis took them to the US border
--- Quote ---
> The imminent end of the rules known as Title 42 stirred fear
among migrants that the change would make it more difficult for
them to stay in the U.S.
>
> Venezuelan migrants who were attempting to cross into the U.S.
spoke to The Associated Press about why they were heading north.
>
> "I was a student, but because the university became so
expensive, everything was so expensive, my parents couldn't
afford to pay, so I couldn't continue, and so I decided to go
somewhere else to see what I could do," migrant María José Durán
said.
>
> Another migrant, Alejandro Rangel González, said "we left
everything behind, we lost everything, money, everything."
>
> With a late-night deadline looming, migrants in Mexico shed
clothing before descending a steep bank into the Rio Grande,
clutching plastic bags filled with clothes.
>
> On the U.S. side of the river, migrants put on dry clothing
and picked their way through concertina wire.
>
> Many surrendered immediately to authorities and hoped to be
released while pursuing their cases in backlogged immigration
courts, which takes years.
>
> It was not clear how many migrants were on the move or how
long the surge would last.
>
> By early Thursday evening, the flow seemed to be slowing in
some locations, but it was not clear why or whether the number
of crossings would increase again after the restrictions expire.
>
> A U.S. official reported that daily encounters on Tuesday hit
10,000 — nearly twice the level from March and only slightly
below the 11,000 figure that authorities have said is the upper
limit of what they expect after Title 42 ends.
>
> The new policies crack down on illegal crossings while also
setting up legal pathways for migrants who apply online, seek a
sponsor and undergo background checks.

--- Quote ---
> What is the US Venezuela deal?
> The deal will allow the United Nations to oversee the use of
Venezuelan funds, frozen overseas by U.S.-led sanctions, to pay
for humanitarian relief in the country totaling, by some
estimates, roughly $3 billion or more.

> Migrants at the U.S.-Mexico border swelter in unforgiving
Texas and Arizona heat
> ...
> Experts say increased temperatures and a persistent heat wave
in the Southwest has exacerbated an already difficult
immigration crisis and endangered the lives of migrants who
often undertake long and perilous journeys without food, water
or sun protection.
>
> “People just don’t know what they’re up against,” said Laurie
Cantillo, board member and volunteer for Humane Borders, a
nonprofit group that sets up water stations and delivers
supplies to people attempting to cross into the U.S. through
remote and unforgiving landscapes.
>
> Oppressive heat has blanketed much of the southern half of the
United States, from Arizona to Florida, for nearly two weeks,
bringing early season triple-digit temperatures to millions of
people on both sides of the border.
> ...
> When Cantillo first arrived in Arizona’s Organ Pipe Cactus
National Monument last week, temperatures topped 115 degrees,
she said. She encountered a mother with an infant strapped to
her back, neither wearing sun protection. Cantillo and other
volunteers provided the family with granola bars, water and
hats.
>
> “Sometimes they come over so ill prepared,” Cantillo said.
“Coyotes tell them just to cross and someone will pick them up,
but it could be days before they’re found.”
> ...
> officers treated a 10-year-old for heat exhaustion earlier in
the summer and responded to four river drownings. Last week, a
body was found floating on the Mexican side of the Rio Grande.
> ...
> Researchers have found that it’s not just high temperatures
that contribute to deaths during attempted crossings but also
the physical exertion needed to traverse remote regions without
proper preparation.
> ...
> Daniel Martínez, an associate professor of sociology at the
University of Arizona in Tucson and one of the authors of the
study, said the recent lifting of Title 42, which makes
deportation more likely, has contributed to people attempting to
cross the border in remote locations far away from human-made
borders.
> ...
> “Right now the heat is terrible — you can’t escape it no
matter where you go,” Pimentel said. “Some people get lucky and
manage to get that appointment, but there are so many others who
don’t.”
> ...
> Conditions there are quickly turning dangerous under the
sweltering heat, said Christina Asencio, director of research
and analysis at the nonpartisan group Human Rights First. On
Thursday, she encountered a Haitian mother and her 1-month-old
child living in an open air encampment with no sanitation or
plumbing.
>
> During the same trip, she met a woman from Venezuela who had
recently experienced a heart attack and another woman from
Honduras who had been **** at the camp and fought off her
attacker when he returned a second time.
>
> None of these people had been able to secure appointments
through the CBP One app despite what Asencio described as
credible asylum claims, she said.
--- End Quote ---
All this could be avoided if people were simply let in upon
arrival.
