Should we even be concerned with the Olympics? Displaying your
athletic ability merely for the sake of displaying your athletic
ability seems pointless. Wouldn’t it make more sense to
eventually discontinue the Olympics, rather than trying to
reform it with more non-western categories?

It is about becoming an icon representing your country. Fans
need individuals to look up to in order to be inspired in their
own lives. Taxpayers have higher morale by remembering their
taxes fund their national team's training. This is elementary
nationalism.

Then we would be left with only profit-based sports events
controlled by advertizers etc.. Keeping the Olympics at least
ensures that the most prestigious sports event is a non-profit,
statist event.
