Montrealer settles with employer after years of fighting racism
--- Quote ---
>
>
> Bienné Blémur says he doesn’t feel vindicated.
>
> Instead, he feels at peace now that he’s reached a settlement
with his former employer.
>
> Blémur has been in a legal battle for six years with the
Société du Parc Jean-Drapeau (SPJD), a paramunicipal agency, and
his former union, the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage
Employees (IATSE).
>
> It stems from incidents he experienced as a head stage rigger
at Jean Drapeau Park in 2016, when he was the target of racial
slurs — including being called the N-word.
>
> Blémur says that after two years of mistreatment, he quit in
2018 after filing multiple grievances.
>
> “The employer has agreed to settle because the employer has
seen the light,” said Fo Niemi, executive director of the Centre
for Research-Action on Race Relations (CRARR), whose
organization has been helping Blémur.
>
> “More importantly, the employer has recognized systemic racism
and that Mr. Blémur has been the victim of systemic racism and
all that it entails in terms of consequences.”
>
> Niemi says in the settlement agreement, the park’s management
recognized that Blémur was “the victim of vexatious
discriminatory conduct leading to negative psychological
repercussions” and it also recognized the existence of systemic
racism.
>
> He says the settlement sets a historic precedent that every
employer should take into account.

It's still OK for Islamophobia to be "white".
'Pain into purpose': Community prepares to mark two years since
London, Ont., attack
--- Quote ---
>
>
> Maryam Al-Sabawi says she's often startled by the sound of a
passing car, haunted by the memory of her friend being killed
two years ago in a devastating vehicle attack in London, Ont.
>
> Prosecutors allege the attack was an act of terrorism
targeting London's Muslim community. Nathaniel Veltman, who was
20 at the time of his arrest, faces four counts of first-degree
murder and one count of attempted murder and is set to stand
trial in September.
>
> Al-Sabawi and community leaders say London, in southwestern
Ontario, has been transformed by the 2021 attack, which was the
worst mass killing in the city's history.
>
> "There's still a lot of fear and worry in the community, but a
lot of healing has happened as well," says Rumina Morris,
director of the anti-racism and anti-oppression division at the
City of London.
>
> "We really turned the pain of that attack into purpose."
>
> Since the attack, London has accelerated initiatives that
tackle Islamophobia as well as anti-Black and anti-Indigenous
racism. Those include naming community liaisons for outreach to
Muslim, Black and Indigenous communities, says Morris.
>
> London's anti-oppression and anti-racism division has proposed
a framework that would allow the city to pass all policies
through an anti-racism lens.
>
> The city has also memorialized members of the Afzaal family
through parks, murals and gardens established in their honour
across the city.
>
> Al-Sabawi, who founded Youth Coalition Combating Islamophobia
after her friend's death, says it's important to keep combating
hate.
>
> "Even though (we're) tired of fighting, we continue fighting
because we don't want anybody else to experience this," she
says. "We know how painful it is."
>
> Attacks against Muslim Canadians haven't stopped, she says,
which is why resilience is necessary.
>
> Early findings from a Senate committee studying the issue
indicated Islamophobia and violence against Muslims is
widespread and deeply entrenched in Canadian society.
>
> The Greater Toronto Area has seen several cases of violence
outside mosques in recent months. In April, a man tried to run
over Muslim worshippers gathering in large groups outside a
Markham, Ont., mosque during the month of Ramadan, police have
said.
>
> Al-Sabawi has had a few frightening experiences herself-- a
few days after the attack on the Afzaal family, she says she was
in a car with her mother when another vehicle tried to run them
off the road. She and her Muslim friends have also been told to
"go back to where they came from" while at school, she says.
>
> The fact that such examples of Islamophobia still take place
in London is "shocking," says Morris, of the city's anti-racism
and anti-oppression division.
>
> "But overwhelmingly the appetite to do something different and
better is louder and stronger," she says.
>
> Josh Morgan, the mayor of London, says the city has undergone
a "phenomenal" transformation since the attack.
>
> "There was this coming together in a way that I've never seen
before," he says in an interview.
>
> "People from all aspects of life decided that the response to
this was going to be that we were going to confront hate,
Islamophobia, racism."
>
> Now, it's become common in London for different communities to
support one another, he says.
>
> "It could be an event for the Sikh community and you will see
members of other faith-based communities come out and support
that event," he says.
>
> Al-Sabawi says the ultimate goal is to eradicate Islamophobia
and racism, and mark the progress that has been made along the
way.
>
> "We're excited to show how far we've come as a community," she
says. "That's really important."
>

--- Quote ---

> A Quebec Superior Court judge on Wednesday denied a request by
a Muslim advocacy group and a civil liberties organization to
suspend the province’s ban on prayer rooms in public schools.
>
> The Canadian Civil Liberties Association and the National
Council of Canadian Muslims had argued that the ban was causing
irreparable harm to Muslim students and needed to be suspended
immediately. Muslim students couldn’t wait while the wider legal
challenge made its way through the courts, they said.
>
> Justice Lukasz Granosik agreed that the ban violates religious
freedom and could cause irreparable harm to Muslim students. But
he said the groups hadn’t demonstrated the need for urgency
because they only filed their request for a stay in June when
the ban went into effect May 3.

London police not doing enough to tackle systemic racism,
policing expert says
--- Quote ---
>
>
> London police numbers crunched by researcher Tandeep Sidhu
show Black people in the city experienced force by officers at a
rate five times higher than the general population in 2022.
Indigenous Londoners experienced use of force by officers at a
rate of just over twice as high as the general population that
same year.
>
> "In order to move forward and effectively address these
issues, there needs to be an acknowledgment of systemic
discrimination in policing practices. This is a matter of public
trust and transparency," Sidhu told CBC News.
>
> London police made public their annual use-of-force report for
2022 in February. At the time, officials said it appeared use of
force against ethno-cultural communities was disproportionate,
but "no strong conclusions can be drawn from the data alone, as
more information is required before a complete analysis is
possible."
>
> That's not what Sidhu got from the numbers. His analysis
showed a "clear an consistent pattern of over representation of
Black and Indigenous residents in use-of-force incidents," he
said.
>
> "This trend cannot be dismissed, as this pattern has
replicated itself year over year," Sidhu said. "This is a
consistent pattern that cannot be attributed to the
interactional level, as the data suggests there is a more
systemic component at play."
>
> It's important to remember that Black and Indigenous people
may have encountered police in a context that was the result of
racial discrimination, for example, a police stop, he added.

Family calls for review of nurses' order decision into man's
death after lengthy wait in Montreal ER
--- Quote ---
>
>
> The family of a man who died after an hours-long wait in the
ER at a Montreal hospital is calling for a review of a decision
that cleared the nurses who saw him of any wrongdoing.
>
> Akeem Scott went to the emergency room at the Jewish General
Hospital in June 2019 with intense stomach pain, and after
waiting for four hours, he left without being treated, according
to a coroner's report. The 26-year-old man went to a friend's
house and died from acute peritonitis.
>
> The Quebec Order of Nurses exonerated the nursing staff
involved, but now the family wants that decision reviewed.
>
> "He would have been alive if he got the help that he needed at
that time," said Scott's mother, Marcia Samuels, at a news
conference Friday.
>
> According to the coroner's report, Scott was triaged at level
3 when he showed up at the ER, which means he should have been
seen by a doctor within 30 minutes. At one point, he lay in a
fetal position on the floor, writhing in pain.
>
> "They just ignored him, completely ignored him," Samuels said.
>
> The family filed a complaint with the Order of Nurses last
year. In its response issued last month, the order wrote, "It is
indeed unfortunate that your son did not receive a medical
evaluation within 30 minutes as provided for by the Canadian
Triage and Acuity Scale according to the level of priority
determined by the nurses."
>
> "We cannot, however, blame the nurses alone for the fact that
the reality of the ER makes it difficult to provide medical care
within the time limits set by the triage scale."
>
> It added that it does not intend to lodge a complaint with the
order's disciplinary council.
>
> The family is furious and has requested a review of the
decision.
>
> "I feel that it's unfair that they are taking responsibility
away from anyone that was there, there's no professional or
personal accountability for the situation," said Scott's
brother, Lloyd Allison.
>
> The family believes the medical staff should be held
accountable because they say Scott was not treated properly,
suggesting racial bias could have been a factor.
>
> "Just the fact that he was writhing in pain and no one saw
that as him needing to be either bumped up or taken care of in a
different way, I feel that there was some kind of bias there,"
Allison said.
