Building the apartments close enough to shade one another may
actually be prudent as a way to reduce heating from sunlight. If
they were built further apart such that none of them were
shaded, they would heat up even more.

HTML https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/heritage-status-home-toronto-caldecott-1.7163883
A couple in an affluent midtown Toronto neighbourhood is
asking the city to remove the heritage designation from their
century home because they say the original owner was racist.
The two-and-a-half storey 9,000-square foot house in the Yonge
and St. Clair area, was built in 1906 for Stapleton Pitt
Caldecott, a former Toronto Board of Trade president who was
opposed to immigration, a University of Toronto historian says.
...
HTML https://i.cbc.ca/1.7163933.1712262897!/fileImage/httpImage/image.jpg_gen/derivatives/original_1180/racisthouse-city.jpg
...
The board turned down the couple's request
...
A city staff report to the TPB concluded the home's designation
had little to do with its association with Caldecott. Instead,
the report says the home is worth preserving because it was
designed by prominent Toronto architect Eden Smith and because
of the unique structural qualities he brought to the building.
"Staff maintain that the property is valued as a fine
representative example of an early 20th century house form
building designed in the Period Revival style influenced by the
Arts and Crafts Movement,"
The fundamental argument that should be made is that no
Western-style building should have heritage designation in
Canada, as otherwise would be an affirmation of colonialism.
Akladios said that within weeks he told the couple that
if they wanted to object to the house's heritage designation,
they'd be better off focusing on the building's architectural
merits than on Caldecott, because he felt they'd have a better
chance challenging the designation on those grounds.
Western architecture needs to be eradicated from Canada (and all
other former Western colonial possessions) ASAP.
Another board member, Paul Cordingley, told last week's
meeting the Mahesan-Earle application raises significant points
about what a heritage designation means.
"I think we have to find a way of disengaging preservation from
celebrating," he said. "Because I would not want anyone to think
that if we're trying to maintain the designation of this house,
that we are celebrating or downplaying what goes along with
that."
If you want to preserve it, you are saying the house belongs
here. But such a house only got built because of Western
colonialism. Therefore you are saying you are glad Western
colonialism happened. So there is no disengaging preservation
from celebration.
As for whether the couple is looking to renovate or
demolish the house, Earle told CBC Toronto they're not looking
to have the designation removed "as a tactic."
"I have no plans of developing this house or changing this
house," she told CBC Toronto.
I suggest you demolish it.

Well-spotted!

Short answer: Eurocentrism.
HTML https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chandelier#History
In the 17th century multi-faceted crystals that could
reflect light from the candles were used to decorate chandelier
and they were called chandeliers de crystal in France.[8] The
chandeliers produced in France in the 17th century were in the
French Baroque style, and rococo in the 18th century. French
rock crystal chandeliers found their finest expression under
Louis XIV, as exemplified by chandeliers at the Palace of
Versailles.[39] Rock crystal began to be replaced by cut glass
in the late 17th century.[8] and examples of chandeliers made
with rock crystal as well as Bohemian glass can be found in the
Palace of Versailles.[40]
...
The 19th century was a period of great changes and development;
the industrial revolution and the growth of wealth from the
industries greatly increased the market for chandeliers, new
methods of lighting and better techniques of production emerged,
and countries such as the United States also became significant
producers of chandeliers.[49] New styles and more complex and
elaborate chandeliers also appeared, and production of
chandeliers reached a peak in the 19th century. France, which
only started producing significant amount of high-quality glass
in the late 18th century, became renown as a producer of the
finest quality chandeliers. One of the best-known manufacturers,
Baccarat, started making chandeliers in 1824. In England, Perry
& Co. produced a large quantity of chandeliers, while F. & C.
Osler was known for producing spectacular chandeliers, the great
proportion of which went to India, the richest market for
chandeliers at that time.[8]
This is confusing. The post showing Guangzhou is accurate in
pointing out that China is not collapsing. The reply suggesting
that China would be better with less infrastructure was posted
by a tweeter who in other posts praises China's infrastructure:
HTML https://x.com/AgentSaffron/status/1410478632682901504
Furthermore, the original tweeter is pro-Palestine:
HTML https://x.com/SpiritofHo/status/1715976082912842063
whereas the reply tweeter calls for suspicion towards those who
post about Palestine:

We must not appear as though we side with the latter, which is
how your post makes us appear.

I also like the public transportation aspect of China's
infrastructure, but not the buildings.
I do not side with agentsaffron over spiritofho on all issues,
but spiritofho is a noted False Leftist "New China" fan, and his
purpose of the tweet is not just to show that China is not
collapsing, but to implicitly praise the Western infrastructure,
while Agent Saffron (although praising high tech public
transportation) has praised walkable infrastructure in the past:
