s/crime/ukrainian-refugee-attacked-by-group-of-arab-migrants-in-
sweden-pushed-into-river-and-left-fighting-for-his-life/
A group of five Arab migrants have been arrested and
charged with aggravated assault in Sweden after filming
themselves pushing a Ukrainian refugee into a river and watching
the man fight for his life in the freezing cold water.
The incident occurred on Nov. 22 last year when the Ukrainian
victim, working as a truck driver for a Polish hauling company,
decided to stop at Sydhamnen in Malmö and opted to try his hand
at some late-night fishing in the nearby river.
The truck driver’s dash cam showed a group of Arab males
approaching the man and engaging him in a conversation. The
Ukrainian refugee appeared to not understand the group of
migrants and shows them the fish he had caught, before
proceeding to turn around and continue fishing.
At this moment, one of the Arab men powerfully shoves the truck
driver in the back, causing him to fall into the extremely cold
river. Later, when the police measured the temperature, they
learned the water was just 8°C (46.4°F) — considered to be
dangerously cold, with even the most extreme-cold swimmers at
risk of hypothermia if exposed to such a temperature for more
than a few minutes.
I am quite certain the fish out of water were in more danger
than the fisher in water.
One of the Arab migrants filmed the assault, and the men
can be heard laughing uncontrollably as their victim struggles
and splashes in the water. With no ladder to assist his escape,
he can be heard screaming desperately for help as his heavy, wet
clothes pull him under the surface.
It was far less than how desperate the fish were when the fisher
pulled them above the surface.
Eventually, some of the group helped him back onto the
platform, where they left him for dead and drove off in a
vehicle.
Our Ahimsa activists dropped the ball here. They should have
left him in the water at least until his face had been
underwater for many minutes.
When tended to by emergency responders, the victim’s body
temperature was just 34 degrees, which is classed as
hypothermia.
8 degrees would have been better.
When interviewed by police, the Ukrainian refugee said he
had been scared the migrant group would kill him.
Why was he not scared that he would kill the fish?
The Swedish prosecutor handling the case accused the
group of being “together and in agreement” in their joint attack
on the truck driver and showed “special recklessness and
brutality” in their treatment of their victim.
Not even close to the brutality showed by the fisher towards his
victims.

HTML https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/may/25/orcas-ramming-yachts-spanish-whale-behaviour-trauma-humans
Orcas are ramming yachts off the Spanish coast – is the whale
world rising up?
One explanation is that their behaviour is a reaction to past
trauma inflicted on one member of the pod by humans
Recent accounts of “attacks” on vessels by orcas off the Iberian
peninsula are challenging the way we expect the natural world to
behave. Increasing in number since 2020, from northern Portugal
to the strait of Gibraltar, these incidents suggest the need for
a cetacean scene investigation team. On 4 May, in one of the
most extreme events, orcas sank a yacht.
“There were two smaller orcas and one larger,” the skipper
Werner Schaufelberger told German magazine Yacht. “The little
ones shook the rudder at the back while the big one repeatedly
backed up and rammed the boat with full force from the side.”
The word “attack” used in conjunction with animals is a human
judgment; their actions are more likely to be defensive. But
there is definitely something strange going on. Andrew Sutton,
an experienced underwater photographer with whom I work and who
is familiar with these particular orca pods, has noted them
“doing weird things” in the strait, including “whacking rudders
off and annoying fishermen”.
Dr Alfredo López Fernandez, of GTOA, told me that they have two
hypotheses. One, the orcas “have invented something new and
repeat it. This behaviour matches the profile of juveniles.” Or
that it is a “response to an adverse situation; one or several
individuals have had a bad experience and are trying to stop the
boat so as not to repeat it. This behaviour coincides with the
profile of adults.”
Either way, it is an astonishing notion. Dr López Fernandez and
his team have named, generically, the interacting orcas Gladis
(after their original scientific name, Orca gladiator). They
suspect an individual, Gladis Blanca, initiated this behaviour
after a “critical moment of agony”, perhaps as a result of
collison with a vessel; she also has a young daughter, born in
2021. Other Gladis whales have been entangled with fishing gear
or suffered lacerations and even amputations. “All this has to
make us reflect on the fact that human activities are at the
origin of this behaviour.”
Part of me is secretly excited at this idea of nature fighting
back. According to the charity Whale and Dolphin Conservation,
at least 174 orcas have died in captivity since 1961, having
been forced to swim aimlessly about in overgrown swimming pools
without any of the peer interaction that defines them.
I felt I’d given up all notion of being a “superior” animal.
Instead, I was part of this interaction of three cultures: orca,
sperm whale and human. Orcas, not us, are probably the most
successful mammal on Earth. They’ve been around in their evolved
state for 6m years, and are present in every ocean. They have no
known predator. Except us.
I’ve no idea if the Iberian orcas are expressing a struggle for
survival as we deplete their food sources and pollute their
environment. Or just playing with us. But when Ranil
Nanayakkara, the scientist with us on the boat, pulled up his
underwater microphone after the orcas had gone, he discovered it
had been bitten off.

Aggression or just play? Killer whales appear to be teaching
each other how to sink boats
Earlier this month, three orcas targeted a yacht off the coast
of Spain, in the Strait of Gibraltar, and sunk the vessel after
piercing the rudder.
The ship’s captain, Werner Schaufelberger, said two small orcas
seemed to be learning from a larger orca during the incident.
The larger orca repeatedly rammed the side of the ship, while
the smaller orcas targeted the rudder.
“The two little orcas observed the bigger one’s technique and,
with a slight run-up, they too slammed into the boat,”
Schaufelberger told the German publication Yacht.
In that incident, as well, it appeared a mother orca was
teaching her calf how to charge the rudder.
“It was definitely some form of education, teaching going on,”
Blackburn told 9news.
According to a Marine Mammal Science study published last June,
aggressive encounters with orcas off the Iberian coast began in
May 2020 and are increasing.
Experts aren’t sure what started the behaviour but believe one
specific orca, a female named White Gladis, is influencing the
rest of the Iberian orca subpopulation, which is listed as
critically endangered by the IUCN Red List.
“That traumatized orca is the one that started this behaviour of
physical contact with the boat,” he added.

If Westerners such as Ghandi walked upon an innocent person
being mugged in an alley Ghandi would throw up his arms in
protest and yell "STOP!", and then walk away leaving the victim
to fight off the mugger all by themselves. This is what
"non-violent" actually means. Ghandi would then praise himself
for his "compassion". An anti-violent person would blow the
muggers brains out on the spot...
Gandhi the Philosopher
Better known as the face of non-violent protest, Gandhi
was also a surprising, subtle philosopher in the Stoic
tradition.

Was Mahatma Gandhi a philosopher? He would not have
thought so himself. But I want to show that he was a model for
philosophy in the philosophical subtlety of his accounts of
non-violence and in his thinking on a vital kind of freedom.
Gandhi was full of surprises: in his defence of concrete
particularity in ethics when exceptionless rules cannot guide
conduct; in his openness to views from other cultures; and in
his exemplary response to criticism, which was welcomed,
promulgated without being distorted, treated with disconcerting
wit, and used to lead to a radical re-thinking of his own views.
Of course, Gandhi (1869-1948) is known for his belief in
non-violence, which included, but was by no means confined to,
non-violent resistance to the British rulers of India. But it is
less well-known that he rejected the non-violence he had heard
of in India. Although the most important influence in his life
was the Jain faith, on non-violence, he preferred the second
most important influence – Leo Tolstoy. He thought, rightly or
wrongly, that the Indian view he knew did not sufficiently mind
someone else treading on a beetle, so long as one kept oneself
pure by not treading on it oneself. Gandhi saw his early self as
a votary of violence. It was the Russian
[JUDEO-CHRISTIAN]-[s]Christian[/s] writer, Tolstoy, who
converted Gandhi to non-violence, a fact that shows his
openness to views from other cultures...

California man who pummeled, shot at female deputy found
not guilty despite video of attack
...
Video shows that he punched her repeatedly, the two struggled
for a gun, and he fired multiple shots after taking it. McCarthy
told Fox News Digital on Wednesday that she had only survived
because the gun jammed the first time he pulled the trigger,
aiming directly at her face.
Young's defense attorney, however, argued that McCarthy had no
lawful reason to do what she was doing, and therefore his client
was acting in self-defense.
Raj Malin, the defense lawyer, told Los Angeles' ABC 7 that
McCarthy did not have reasonable suspicion to justify patting
down his schizophrenic client when she arrived on scene.
"The issue was, was the initial detention of Mr. Young legal?"
he told the station. "If it's not, then he's not guilty. ... He
could punch her 100 times, and it wouldn't matter."
...
Backup arrived, returned fire and took Young into custody.
Although deputies shot him, Young survived the encounter and
walked free after his acquittal on the attempted murder
charge.
