Texas elections
By: guest5 Date: March 11, 2021, 9:36 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
Oscar winning actor, whiskey-developer, Lincoln Motor
Company spokesman, University of Texas Minister of Culture — and
Texas governor? Matthew McConaughey says he's giving 'true
consideration' to running for the state's top office.
In an interview on 'The Balanced Voice' podcast, the Texas
native expressed interest about a potential future gubernatorial
run in his home state. McConaughey says he's at a point in his
life where he's asking himself, 'What is my leadership role?
Because I do think I have some things to teach and share, and
what is my role? What's my category in my next chapter of life
that I'm going into?'
McConaughey has already begun to gradually dip his toe into the
public political sphere. In July 2020, he recorded a video
urging fans to where masks amid the COVID-19 pandemic; a month
later, he hosted Dr. Anthony Fauci for a wide-ranging live
interview on Instagram. McConaughey has also spoken out against
social media disinformation and America's growing partisan
divisions during interviews with several media platforms.
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) is up for reelection in 2022.
Of the 11 GOP candidates running for election in Texas only one
of them is anti-Trump:
Former Rep. Beto O’Rourke is eyeing a second run for
governor of his home state of Texas, Axios has reported Sunday,
citing political operatives in the state.
If he wins the Democratic nomination, O’Rourke would likely face
off against Republican incumbent Gov. Greg Abbott, a staunch
conservative who has used his power to curtail voting rights,
fight mask and vaccine mandates and ban abortion in the state.
...
Since he lost a senate race to Republican Ted Cruz in 2018 by
just over two percentage points and launched a failed
presidential bid in 2020, O’Rourke has spent his time advocating
for voting rights. He launched a political action committee
focused on registering and turning out voters called Powered by
People, and along with other activists, he led a voting rights
march to the state’s capital city of Austin this summer, part of
an effort to stop a voter suppression bill that Abbott later
signed into law.
About O'Rourke:
HTML https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beto_O%27Rourke
O'Rourke criticized Israel's actions during the 2014
Israel–Gaza conflict and voted against funding Israel's Iron
Dome missile defense system.[213][214] O'Rourke denounced the
move of the US embassy to Jerusalem as "provocative." He
supports a two-state solution and believes that the U.S. could
best support a peaceful settlement by urging Israel to
discontinue Israeli settlements in the West Bank and assist the
Palestinian Authority to negotiate in good faith and recognize
Israel's right to exist.[215] O'Rourke criticized Israeli Prime
Minister Netanyahu following his comments about annexing the
settlements in the occupied West Bank after the 2019 Israeli
election, calling him a "racist".[216]
OK, the two-state solution support is bad, but overall he is
better than average.
More importantly, he can help with Demographic Blueshift which
can in turn help us subsequently get in someone further left
than him:
O'Rourke favors comprehensive immigration
reform.[241][242] As early as 2012, he asserted that his
experience living on the border gave him "a strong understanding
of immigration's impact on our community", calling El Paso "an
Ellis Island to Latin America for more than 150 years", and
spoke against 'militarizing' the border.[243] O'Rourke opposed
Trump's decision to end Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals
(DACA), which granted temporary stay to some undocumented
immigrants who were brought to the United States as
minors.[244][245] O'Rourke said it is a "top priority" to
protect DREAMers.[244] In October 2016, he gave a TEDx talk,
titled The Border Makes America Great, about his views on
immigration.[246]
He has criticized President Donald Trump's rhetoric on
immigration, saying: "[Trump is] constantly stoking anxiety and
fear about Mexicans, immigrants and the border with Mexico.
Unfortunately this President takes another step into a dark
world of fear, isolation and separation."[30][247] In June 2018,
O'Rourke led protests in Tornillo, Texas, against the Trump
administration family separation policy which involved the
separation of children of immigrant families. The city is
located just miles from the Rio Grande, the river that creates
the border of the United States and Mexico in the state of
Texas.[248] The Trump administration had created a "tent-city"
in Tornillo, where separated children were being held without
their parents. O'Rourke called this practice "Un-American" and
the responsibility of all Americans.[249][250]
...
O'Rourke indicated he would tear down the wall between El Paso
and the southern US border, since he feels that the fencing has
forced migrants to the most inhospitable areas of the southern
border, "ensuring their suffering and death".[254]
I bet Big Bird would actually do a better job in politics than
90% of the politicians in government today! Regardless, Big Bird
is definitely 100% more fun to watch than 100% of them any day
of the week and twice on Sundays!
"We have a governor who does not trust Texas. He doesn't
trust border communities," O'Rourke said.
...
O'Rourke did not mince words when talking about his opponent
Abbott. He pointed to the high death toll from COVID-19 in Texas
and the failure of the electrical grid in Feb. 2021 as evidence
of Abbott's "failure of leadership."
Turning his attention to the border and immigration policy,
O'Rourke said Abbott treats communities like El Paso "as a prop
to stoke anxiety, fear or even hatred."
He said El Pasoans know that more walls and militarization are
not solutions.
"As governor, I'm going to make sure that El Paso, and other
border communities and other places in the state that are so
often overlooked or taken for granted, become a priority," he
said.
...
Voter registration was available on-site, as the former
congressman says winning over new voters and those who didn't
turn out in 2020 will be critical.
"Those unregistered voters, as they come on to the rolls, they
really add up and could make a critical difference," he told the
media in the downtown parking lot.
