In the 1930s, Hitler was widely viewed as just another
protectionist central planner who recognized the supposed
failure of the free market and the need for nationally guided
economic development. Proto-Keynesian socialist economist Joan
Robinson wrote that “Hitler found a cure against unemployment
before Keynes was finished explaining it.”
What were those economic policies? He suspended the gold
standard, embarked on huge public-works programs like autobahns,
protected industry from foreign competition, expanded credit,
instituted jobs programs, bullied the private sector on prices
and production decisions, vastly expanded the military, enforced
capital controls, instituted family planning, penalized smoking,
brought about national healthcare and unemployment insurance,
imposed education standards, and eventually ran huge deficits.
The Nazi interventionist program was essential to the regime’s
rejection of the market economy and its embrace of socialism in
one country.
Such programs remain widely praised today, even given their
failures. They are features of every “capitalist” democracy.
Keynes himself admired the Nazi economic program, writing in the
foreword to the German edition to the General Theory: “[T]he
theory of output as a whole, which is what the following book
purports to provide, is much more easily adapted to the
conditions of a totalitarian state, than is the theory of
production and distribution of a given output produced under the
conditions of free competition and a large measure of
laissez-faire.”
society that is what I wanted them to understand. The party is
The small businessmen, who had previously been one of the
mainstays of the party and who had expected great things from
Chancellor Hitler, soon found themselves, many of them,
exterminated and forced back into the ranks of wage earners. A
law passed in October 1937 dissolved all companies with capital
under $40,000 and prohibited the establishment of new companies
with capital under $200,000. This quickly eliminated one-fifth
of all small business enterprises. On the other hand, the large
cartels, which had even been favored by the Republic, were
further strengthened by the Nazis. In fact, by a law of July 15,
1933, they were made compulsory. The Ministry of Economics was
empowered to organize new compulsory cartels or to order
companies to join existing ones.
The system of various business and trade associations organized
during the Republic was maintained by the Nazis, although by the
basic law of February 27, 1934, they were reorganized on the
principle of efficient leadership and placed under state
At the congress of the co-operatives in Berlin in 1933,
Feder, now senior civil servant (Staatssekretar) in the Ministry
of Economics, warned under evident pressure that his ideological
trademark, the elimination of interest slavery (Brechung der
Zinsknechtschaft), did not mean the end of interest. And while
adding that "National Socialists reject socialistic experiments
in the private productive economy," he emphasized that there
were sectors of economic activity where the State had to
intervene
...
According to an editorial in the Völkische Beobachter, Nazi
economic policy rejected "anarchic individualism but affirmed
the creative personality." It aspired to "liberation of the
power of the individual as well as protection both of the
individual and the commonwealth from exploitation or incursions
of excessive individualism, subordination of the common interest
to the selflessly active Führer-personality." The economy, he
declared, "is part of the national substance [Volkstum]. There
is no economic authority as such, no economic freedom, no
economic serfdom as such.... The economy is a partial expression
of the Volksgemeinschaft subordinate to the function of the
State."

After the seizure of power this definition of the role of
the entrepreneur was legally fixed in the 'Law for the
Structuring of National Labour' (20 January 1934). 169 According
to this law, the 'company leader' was the 'trustee of the state'
and therefore obligated to the common good of the national
community. This interpretation of the role of the owner or
manager in the NS state was more important than Hitler's formal
guarantee of private ownership. Because, as the reality of the
Third Reich - particularly in the war years - showed, this
definition of the role of the owner or manager had far-reaching
consequences. The Volksgerichtshof [People's Court, the highest
penal court in the Third Reich-H.B.], for example, handed down
extremely harsh sentences against owners or managers who ignored
the directives of the state plan
...
We also see the socialist character of the Reichsbahn in
something else. It is a warning about the exclusive claims of
the doctrine of private capitalism. It is the living proof that
it is very possible to run a nationalized enterprise without
private capital tendencies and without private capital
management - Adolf Hitler

Himmler’s physician reported that the SS leader told him
that “There will be no more princes. Hitler gave me the order to

suggested that the most important of them should be charged with
espionage and high treason, others with committing sexual
perversions. The People’s Court will thereby sentence them to
death. Goebbels wants the hangings to take place in Berlin
before the Imperial Palace. The princes should be herded on foot
Both the Reich commissioner for price control and the
economy had issued stern warnings against unreasonable price
increases, and these warnings were enforced in Munich yesterday
by Adolf Wagner, the Bavarian Minister of the Interior. Police
raided food stores and arrested 220 people, including many
women, on charges of "profiteering." The men were sent to the
concentration camp at Dachau. The women were thrown in prison.
BERLIN, Jan. 24 [1941]—The death penalty has been
instituted as an extreme punishment for illegal price-raising
and wartime profiteering, according to a decree issued by the
Minister of Justice.
In all serious cases of price-rigging, it says, trials will be
held before special courts that will hand down sentences quickly
and order immediate executions, sometimes within twenty-four
hours. Less serious cases of price-raising will be punished with
long prison terms accompanied by fines and confiscation of
goods.
In all cases, the decree says; those convicted will be punished
further by putting their names on billboards in public.
The decree was dated January 11, but was only announced to the
public today.
