power since the late 1960s, American pop culture became one of
the strongest influences through which Indonesia's ideal of
white beauty was articulated and negotiated. This transnational
circulation of beauty ideals across different historical periods
has undoubtedly helped perpetuate preferences for light skin
that define not only beauty but also discourses on skin color,
gender and race in Indonesia. The popularity of skin whitening
products - which rank at the top of all profit-making products
in the Indonesian cosmetics industry - is further evidence of
the preference for light skin.

dark-skinned eastern Indonesian women reveals the limits of the
"national imagination" in imagining a distinctive kind of
whiteness as an ideal representation of Indonesia. This specific
Indonesian image of white beauty, as I will discuss in Chapter
5, also hides and marginalizes Chinese-Indonesian women whose
skin color may be lighter than other women in Indonesia but who
are also excluded from similar images.
