Today let's contrast Western and non-Western 1990s golf video
games (I want real-life golf to be phased out for environmental
and other reasons). As usual, the Western approach values
simulating real-life golf (including a 3D space) as closely as
       possible:
  HTML https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VhyAQ899WzA
whereas the non-Western approach values telling a captivating
story, with the golf itself (presented proudly in 2D) merely
being the setting for the story:

Of course I prefer the latter approach.

This isn’t really a recommended game, and I don’t know if this
has been mentioned before, but I was shocked when I found out
that old 2D games look much better on a CRT, since a lot of
developers used the unique way that CRTs displayed images to
their advantage. I grew up mostly in the era of modern TVs, so I
       had no idea:

It’s honestly impressive how much mileage developers got out of
the technology. Some games stop looking pixelated almost
entirely once they’re placed in their proper context, and
       resemble cartoons

Lots of good answers here already, but I’d like to suggest one
more: 9/11. Or, more specifically, the way it impacted the
       American psyche.
There was a huge cultural shift towards darker, edgier, angrier
TV, movies, and games after that happened. Games were already
moving that way since Mortal Kombat made its big splash, but IMO
9/11 really turbocharged it. We had just come off a decades-long
tech boom and an unprecedented period of relative peace, the
Soviet Union had recently fallen, and the world had celebrated
the start of the third millennium, and then bam — huge tech
crash combined with the deadliest attack on American soil since
the Civil War. Anger and nihilism exploded across the US, and I
think the cultural zeitgeist reflected it.

Movies, music, TV, clothing -- everything really did a 180 from
the 90's in the post 9/11 era, especially once the Iraq war
started. Look at campy Sliders, Stargate SG-1 and Star Trek
compared to the doom and gloom dark dramas like Battlestar
Galactica (not saying that's a bad thing at all). I feel like
the '08 recession reset the trend by hitting a low water mark,
and then the tide started rising.

Fortunately, MK had minimal influence on non-Western fighting
games, which completely ignored it and continued to revolve
mainly around the Capcom vs SNK rivalry. A good indication of
this is that MK never got crossovers with either of these (but
only much later with DC), whereas the Capcom-SNK crossover was
literally done to celebrate the turn of the millennium in the
most festive way possible, starting with card games:
  HTML https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ufnP8j4hyxg
and then the main event of fighting games:
  HTML https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZckG4MWqzxw
       Those were the days 8)
On the subject of festivity, MK stages utterly lacked such
       feeling:

Contrast with Capcom or SNK stages which deliberately evoked it:

This also reflects the difference between Western and
non-Western conceptions of what the tone of a fighting game
       should be.

What is your opinion on the Pokémon series? It was my first
introduction to 2D RPGs, and I really liked the gameplay (which
was inspired by the Mother series, as Creatures Inc., one of the
development companies of Pokémon, was formerly called Ape Inc
and they developed the Mother series), but looking back it did
seem the concept behind it was very humanist and exploitative.
       What do you think?

"What is your opinion on the Pokémon series? "
       I never played it.

I agree. There are plenty of better choices out there. I myself
preferred to go for RPGs of universes that I was already
familiar with from other media, for example:

I understand its uniqueness within the genre leading to its
deservedly classic status, but I myself am not a fan of it due
to its parodic style. It is hard for me to imagine the in-game
world beyond the events of the plot.

One thing I liked about the Pokémon anime was that it was at
least willing to acknowledge that the relationship was
exploitative. For example, the first Pokémon movie (which I was
a fan of as a kid) was centered around the theme of cloning
Pokémon, and how it causes the Pokémon to rebel against their
       masters:
  HTML https://pokemon.fandom.com/wiki/MS001:_Pok%C3%A9mon:_The_First_Movie
Similar to humans cloning animals for exploitation (which is
       already happening btw):

Archibald adventures, 2D indie video game:

Was a fan of this back in the day. The indie genre on PC has a
       lot of such 2D games.
