Badland is worse because it has several layers of background
each of which move differently.
By the way, there was once a time when it was considered
acceptable to have no background at all, and instead just empty
space behind the foreground:

I see.
Now that you have clarified that, I am recommending Shovel

Looking back, Sonic does not pan in or out either as I initially
thought it did. So I am recommending Sonic Mania also:

These days in a post-9/11 era of 3D games, online fanmade games
like Flash games (e.g. Newgrounds, Y8, Friv, etc.) were probably
few of the only 2D games of my time. Super Mario Flash was one
memory of mine:

Recently I have been getting all these ads for the 3D game Black
Myth: Wukong. This is how inferior it is:
HTML https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AlU0OW7wjpQ
Instead, I will recommend some incomparably superior
Counterculture-era 2D games based on Joruney to the West. The
earliest of these is:
HTML https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/c/cc/SonsonCover.jpg
HTML https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2BXEmS_RdTU
This was one of the first arcade games I ever played. There was
also a sequel for the PC Engine:
HTML https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dpC_7OZengs
SonSon also later appeared in MvC2:
HTML https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IHikCKtlD-Y
Next we have the one that I spent most coins on back in the day:
HTML https://igcc.jp/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/5350a812b656478c1d4a81bd7942f657.png
HTML https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Ci3daC9ETQ
And finally, these deserved to be the last Journey to the West
games ever:

HTML https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fu-4ZV18NfA
What need was there for more after these?

The second that Black Myth: Wukong came out, I was waiting for
you to mention it and offer alternatives ;D
Despite the game being designed in the modern western fashion,
I’m at least slightly hopeful about the game exposing people in
“western” countries to Chinese culture, and potentially even
improving public opinion on China, since the game was produced
by a Chinese studio. US-China and “Europe”-China relations are
so rock bottom at this point, that any sort of cultural soft
power emanating from China would help.
Unfortunately, due to past behavior and internet posts from some
of the developers that have been interpreted as sexist by some
people (which I can’t fully verify, since the situation seems
rather confusing when I try to read about it), Black Myth:
Wukong has turned into the battleground for the “woke vs
anti-woke” culture war (as interpreted by rightists). There was
also an IGN review of the game that criticized the lack of
female characters in the first three chapters (since the
reviewer didn’t have access to the full game), and rightists
started talking about this review article completely out of
context, saying that IGN was slamming the game for its lack of
diversity, when the reviewer only ever mentioned the lack of
women. But this didn’t stop people who didn’t wanna bother to
actually read the article, from complaining that “the wokes
wanna ruin the game by adding a bunch of black, gay, and/or
trans characters”
Either way, it’s kind of concerning to me that online rightists,
many of which would otherwise despise China and make racist
comments about Chinese people, are willing to side with the
developers on this issue, and parade them as heroes fighting
against wokeness and DEI. Perhaps another foreshadowing for the
potential Arctic Alliance?
Most of this discussion is happening online though, so a lot of
regular people won’t hear about any of this drama, and will
probably just enjoy the game. So I guess that’s a minor silver
lining

"exposing people in “western” countries to Chinese culture"
The problem is that the plot makes no sense:
HTML https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Myth:_Wukong#Plot
After successfully escorting Tang Sanzang and recovering
the Buddhist scriptures, Sun Wukong ascends to Buddhahood, but
ultimately rejects life in the Celestial Court, instead choosing
to live on his mountain in peace.
Firstly, in the actual mythos, Buddhas are not part of the
Celestial Court in the first place! Secondly, this is just a
reiteration of the Wukong vs Celestial Court arc which happened
before the main quest:
However, the Celestial Court is angered that Sun Wukong
would disobey them, and sends an army led by Erlang Shen to
force him to return to the Court.
All this happened once already! Why would it play out all over
again?? (And even if for the sake of argument we suppose the
Celestial Court would try to force Wukong (now a Buddha) to work
for them, then would it not be trying to force all the other
Buddhas to do the same??)
"lack of women"
Oriental Legend 2 is especially strong in female representation
(5 out of 10 in the playable cast):
HTML https://www.neostore.com/v/vspfiles/photos/1750-2.jpg?v-cache=1603641999[/img]
(Xiaolongnu and Ziyi aren't even from JTTW but still made it
into the game!)
"trans characters"
Here is a 90s RPG:
HTML https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legend_of_Wukong
which outright reimagined Wujing as female:
HTML https://cdn.mobygames.com/screenshots/3556458-legend-of-wukong-genesis-pigsy-assaults-an-enemy-with-his-curse-.png
Gender-swapping characters was not considered controversial back
in the Counterculture era! (I already mentioned Miss X in the
past:
HTML https://trueleft.createaforum.com/enemies/matt-walsh/msg16622/#msg16622<br
/>. And don't get me started about:
HTML https://darkstalkers.fandom.com/wiki/Midnight_Bliss
;) )
Westerners who presume gender-swapping is a recent development
are totally ignorant!
(Heck, Starzinger (also inspired by JTTW) was from the 70s and
reimagined Sanzang as female:
HTML https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Starzinger#Characters
Princess Aurora ... The only human among the main four
characters. She is the last of the Moon people. Aurora is based
on Tang Sanzang.
And again, there was no controversy whatsoever. Why would there
be?
Related:
HTML https://trueleft.createaforum.com/issues/media-decolonization/msg24666/#msg24666<br
/>)
"online rightists, many of which would otherwise despise China
and make racist comments about Chinese people, are willing to
side with the developers on this issue, and parade them as
heroes fighting against wokeness and DEI."
Yes, which is why we should not recognize Black Myth: Wukong as
truly Chinese, but should on the contrary disdainfully label it
as "New Chinese".
