Speaking of RPGs, has anyone here played the Final
Fantasy/Dragon Quest series? How about the Mother series?

"Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection for Switch:"
Do not play any SF game outside of this collection!
I played SF1 casually, but it was SF2 which really drew me into
the series:
HTML https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CGsLkosT6HI
which I continued to be a fan of until I saw SF4, which finally
convinced me that it was not worthwhile to follow anymore. I was
also a fan of FF, AoF and KoF (98 and earlier), so the last high
point for me was probably the Capcom vs SNK series.

I would honestly have preferred if no more games with these
characters were released after CvS2. At least that way I could
have avoided having to see the characters jump the shark in the
subsequent releases. I only want to remember them as they were
at their best:

For anyone who can stomach modern video game graphics and open
world gaming, I would highly recommend The Elder Scrolls VI:
Oblivion. Could definitely be improved but the main storyline is
excellent, and the game itself has a whimsical feel throughout.

The only 3D games I can stomach are Nintendo games, as they have
still retained a degree of fictionality in their graphics. The
ones with realistic graphics I find unbearable.

"The only 3D games I can stomach are Nintendo games,"
Yes! I especially love Mario games (been a fan since I was
little), though by early Switch era, their path to realistic
graphics have progressed:
HTML https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UMn-p8dunMU
It's like I'm not even playing a Mario game, for the love of
Shennong.
Which is why (unlike what the Eurocentrist base game fans like
to think) I sorta like that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe's Booster
Courses became a little less detailed in the 2020s:
HTML https://youtu.be/z6am1qwKxBM
Though Nintendo turned cowardly when they started to make their
textures a little more realistic:
HTML https://youtu.be/6MGZbftHbQc
Base game fans would call BCP courses "too simple" but for my
inner leftist perspective, it's not simple enough (which is why
Mario Kart should shift back to Super Circuit graphics).

P.S. I still like Mario games. Even some post-Counterculture
Mario games like Super Mario Galaxy, as this is my favorite part
in it:
HTML https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QG9r4sR0ZIo
Yes it's space theme, but Rosalina's Storybook included Aryan
elements like nostalgia, folkism, self-sacrifice and even
anti-materialism (as the girl and Luma weren't that satisfied as
the only two in a large home). The story even had a finite goal.
The illustration was in 2D. Not to mention the music had a lot
of empty space.
I don't know about you, but if you liked the storybook OST, I
have another song suggestion like that. I'd just have to post it
in:

@HikariDude I never really liked the 3D, more open world Mario
games even as a kid. The first time I played a video game that
wasn’t educational (I played a lot of V.Smile and LeapFrog games
when I was little), was when my mom took out my brother’s old
N64. Mario 64 just didn’t vibe with me that much. I basically
ran around the front yard in the very beginning, ran around a
little in Peach’s castle, tried the first level for a second,
and I’m pretty sure I never picked it up again after that.
Sunshine and the newest game Odyssey don’t really appeal to me
for that same reason
The one game that I did end up loving as a kid though, was
Galaxy. But that’s because Super Mario Galaxy didn’t really have
open world levels. Despite its graphics, you go in one direction
basically, and it’s impossible to get lost. I prefer simple
games where you can just relax. If I feel like I don’t know
where I’m going or I’m presented with puzzles, it breaks my flow
completely and I lose interest. I’d also generally rather play a
game that’s very unnecessarily hard and requires fast reflexes,
than an easier game that’s how I described above. So I don’t
mean “easy” when I say “relaxing”
Also, the music in Galaxy is all orchestral. You’re right that
for orchestral music there’s quite a bit of empty space in a lot
of the pieces, so it’s not as bad as it could be. But I think
it’s interesting to point out that even Japanese developers
intuitively pair space settings with that kind of Western,
non-Japanese soundtrack
@90sRetroFan Yeah, I always found fighting games with 3D
graphics ugly and somewhat offputting. The graphical style just
doesn’t mesh well with the traditional fighting game where
you’re locked in place and can only move left or right. While I
don’t prefer Tekken, the series is at least cohesive because the
3D graphics are paired with the ability to step sideways and
around the 3D stage. With modern Street Fighter, it feels like
the team behind Street Fighter had an inferiority complex over
Tekken’s “leap in graphical progress”, and it all just went
downhill from there. Developers always have to “prove
themselves” by taking full advantage of the hardware that their
game is running on, even if they don’t need to, and even if
taking full advantage makes the game worse

Fortunately, not quite always. Here is an example of a
(non-Western, of course) fighting game which went in the
opposite direction, to excellent effect:

Contrast with yet another (Western, of course) fighting game
which tried to look 3D before actual 3D was available:
The graphical animations for the player character and
opponents were created through a bluescreen process, where the
various poses and moves were performed by real actors[3] in
front of a video camera. The game's on-screen character
animation is replays of the actual footage, not a rotoscoped
(redrawn) animation.
Yes, I know the new Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom is a
3D/open-world game, but take a look at this Westerner attempting
to "fix" the art style:

@davidscottjaffe
Don't worry, fellas! I had AI fix it! Now we're talkin'!
Someone should send this to the folks at Nintendo and show them
how to do the art next time.

I don't give a **** about amazing production value+visuals. A
great game is a great game. Just starting and so far, so good.
But given how much everyone goes ape **** over visuals, it's
staggering how this game can look like this and not get at least
a little dinged by reviews.

The best Zelda graphics, which will never be surpassed, are
found in (the aptly named) A Link to the Past:

No more Zelda games should have been produced after this:
