Germany finishes a two-year term on the 15-member council
at the end of this month and Ambassador Christoph Heusgen plans
to retire after more than 40 years as a diplomat.
"Let me end my tenure on the Security Council by appealing to my
Chinese colleagues to ask Beijing for the release of Michael
Kovrig and Michael Spavor. Christmas is the right moment for
such a gesture," Heusgen told the council session, whose
official agenda topic was Iran.
Kovrig, a former Canadian diplomat who was working as an adviser
for the International Crisis Group think tank, and businessman
Spavor were detained by Beijing in 2018 shortly after Canadian
police picked up Huawei Technologies Co Ltd Chief Financial
Officer Meng Wanzhou on a U.S. warrant.
China's deputy U.N. ambassador, Geng Shuang, accused Heusgen of
abusing the Security Council to launch "malicious" attacks on
other members "in an attempt to poison the working atmosphere".
"I wish to say something out of the bottom of my heart: Good
riddance, Ambassador Heusgen," Geng said. "I am hoping that the
council in your absence in the year 2021 will be in a better
position to fulfil the responsibilities...for maintaining
international peace and security."
I like this response. Just one thing, Geng:

Stop wearing that Western suit. What we need to be saying good
riddance to is Western civilization as a whole!

China-India Ties: What efforts are needed to further de-escalate
tensions?
After imposing a preliminary ban in June on 59 Chinese
apps, including TikTok and WeChat, India made the ban permanent
this week. What's the thinking behind the blanket ban? And China
and India have held a ninth round of the Corps Commander Level
Meetings agreeing to push for an early disengagement of
frontline troops. So what efforts are needed to further
de-escalate tensions in the region? And how much impact is the
border dispute having on economic ties?
This is how to talk to Westerners.
I of course put it even more strongly: there is no better poetic
justice than using a weapon against the civilization which
invented it.

China is slowly learning the correct way to talk to Westerners:
HTML https://www.yahoo.com/news/china-urges-australia-close-offshore-161852857.htmlhttps://www.yahoo.com/news/china-urges-australia-close-offshore-161852857.html
China urges Australia to close offshore detention centres
GENEVA (Reuters) - China on Friday said it was "deeply
concerned" by what it described as the Australian government's
operation of offshore detention centres, and it called for the
sites to be closed immediately.
...
In a statement to the U.N. Human Rights Council in Geneva, China
alleged that the detention centres "fall short of adequate
medical conditions where a large number of immigrants, refugees
and asylum seekers have been detained over a long period of time
or even indefinitely, and their human rights have been
violated."
It did not specify any locations, describing them as "third
countries". Asylum seekers intercepted at sea en route to
Australia are sent for "processing" to Papua New Guinea or to
the South Pacific island of Nauru.
...
"We urge Australia to immediately close down all offshore
detention centers and take concrete steps to protect the rights
of immigrants, refugees and asylum seekers, especially
children," China said in its statement, which it submitted on
behalf of a group of unnamed countries.
However, what is missing from this statement is what will happen
to Australia if it refuses to close down its detention centres
(e.g. how many WMDs will hit it every day until it complies).
China has apparently not yet recognized that there is no other
way to get through to Westerners.
