2020 Close to Becoming the Hottest Year on Record
This past November was the hottest ever recorded, another
global temperature milestone in a year that’s one step closer to
surpassing 2016 as the warmest on record.
November was close to 0.8° Celsius above the average temperature
between 1981 to 2010, and 0.1°C above the previous warmest
Novembers in 2016 and 2019, according to a monthly report by
Europe’s Earth observation agency, Copernicus. Temperatures were
most above average in Northern Europe, Siberia, and the Arctic.
“These records are consistent with the long-term warming trend
of the global climate,” said Carlo Buontempo, director of the
Copernicus Climate Change Service. “All policy-makers who
prioritize mitigating climate risks should see these records as
alarm bells.”
Global temperatures from January to October were already 1.2ºC
above pre-industrial levels, according to the World
Meteorological Organization. No matter what happens over the
rest of the year, this decade will be the hottest on record,
with the warmest six years all happening since 2015.
This year is likely to remain on a par or become slightly warmer
than 2016 unless global temperatures fall significantly from
November to December, which would not be unprecedented,
Copernicus said.
“Temperatures in the Arctic and northern Siberia remained
consistently high, with sea ice at its second lowest extent,”
Buontempo said. “This trend is concerning and highlights the
importance of comprehensive monitoring of the Arctic, as it is
warming faster than the rest of the world.”
Antarctic sea ice extent was close to average, with temperatures
most below average in West Antarctica.
Australia experienced its warmest spring on record, hitting a
mean temperature 2.03°C above the long-term average, according
to NASA.
Massive Tsunami-Like Waves Engulf Small Harbor in Italy
Several meter high waves caused by heavy storms in the
Tyrrhenian Sea overrun a small Italian village's safety walls
and devastate parts of its harbor. The destructive waves damaged
several buildings, flooded streets and swapped away containers.
Only due to the harbor's meter high safety walls the powerful
waves haven't been able to devastate the whole harbor, including
dozens of ships, cars and nearby houses.
Unlike 'real' tsunami waves which are generated by the
displacement of water (for example, by earthquakes, landslides
or big glacier calving events), waves which are generated by
storms and tides usually have a smaller wavelength.
5.1 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Southwest Of Africa
Earthquake hits the ocean off South-Western Africa A 5.1
magnitude earthquake occurred in the South Atlantic Ocean,
South-West of Africa on Sunday, January 24. The US Geological
Survey (USGS) confirmed the earthquake happened at 5.11pm and
had a depth of 10km. No tsunami warnings have been issued. An
earthquake with a magnitude of 5.1 jolted southwest of Africa at
1511 GMT on Sunday, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said. The
epicenter, with a depth of 10.0 km, was initially determined to
be at 52.9292 degrees south latitude and 10.0844 degrees east
longitude. Earthquakes are caused by rocks under the earth’s
surface that suddenly break along a fault. This energy leads to
seismic waves that make the ground shake or tremble, according
to Michigan Tech. Depending on the location and magnitude, these
tremors can cause huge waves in the ocean, which can result in
tsunamis if they reach land.

An earthquake of magnitude 5.4 occurred 23 km north of
Shihezi, Xinjiang, China, According to Kazakhstan National Data
Center (KNDC) reported. The quake hit at depth of 10 km beneath
the epicenter near Shihezi, Xinjiang, On Snday, 24 January 2021
at 9:42 am (Local time). The exact magnitude, epicenter, and
depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or
minutes as seismologists review data and refine their
calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Based on
the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused
any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as
light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Strong earthquake strikes near Antarctica, causes tsunami
A strong 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck the Southern
Ocean near Antarctica on Saturday, prompting a tsunami alert for
areas which are virtually uninhabited, officials say. Small
tsunami waves were reported but serious damage or injuries are
not expected.
The earthquake happened at 8:37 p.m. Chilean time on Saturday
and struck about 55 kilometers (34 miles) south of Elephant, a
mountainous and ice-covered island in the outer reaches of the
South Shetland Islands.
Data from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) put the earthquake’s
magnitude at 6.9, down from earlier estimates of 7.3 and 7.0,
with a depth of just 10 kilometers (6 miles).
Islands near the epicenter, including Elephant but also King
George Island and Clarence, have no permanent population but are
home to a number of research stations. Serious damage or
injuries are not expected.
A tsunami alert was issued for Chilean Antarctica, which is
uninhabited except for a small town and research station called
Villa Las Estrellas. “ONEMI requests leaving the beach area of
the Antarctic territory,” the National Office of Emergencies
(ONEMI) said.
“Earthquakes of this size are known to generate tsunamis
dangerous to shorelines near the source,” the U.S. National
Tsunami Warning Center said in a statement. It said there was no
tsunami threat to the U.S., but small tsunami waves were
recorded close to the earthquake’s epicenter.
Tajikistan Earthquake Today: Magnitude 5.2 Earthquake Occurs In
Southern Tajikistan
A magnitude-5.2 earthquake occurred in southern
Tajikistan at 0001 Jan. 25. The epicenter was about 36 km (22
miles) south of Khorog, Tajikistan. The tremor occurred at a
depth of about 108 km (67 miles), and light shaking was probably
felt throughout northeastern Afghanistan, southern Tajikistan,
and, possibly, northern Pakistan. There have been no initial
reports of damage or casualties as a result of the earthquake;
however, significant damage is unlikely. It could take several
hours until authorities can conduct comprehensive damage
assessments, especially in remote areas. Light aftershocks are
likely over the coming days.Officials may temporarily shut down
transportation infrastructure in the tremor zone to check for
damage. Minor disruptions could occur during shutdowns, but
service will likely resume quickly if no damage is found.
Utility outages are possible, particularly near the earthquake's
epicenter.
Mount Etna crater ruptures: Explosive volcano 'SPLITS OPEN'
after powerful lava eruptions
A NEW SPLIT in the crater of Mount Etna has bisected the
volatile volcano, as Europe's most active volcanic site
continues to erupt with lava rocks and ash.
Mount Etna had suffered a dramatic rupture after a "new split"
opened up along its active crater. Footage from the scene shows
lava rocks flying into the air and orange streams oozing down
Mount Etna’s slopes. The new split in the crater appears to have
bisected the famous volcano.
The volatile volcano began erupting last Sunday, according to a
local volcanologist.
Boris Behncke, from the INGV-Osservatorio Etneo in Catania,
Sicily, said that lava began "oozing" from the Etna's southeast
crater and toward the east last weekend.
A second lava overflow was detected from the north side of the
same crater days later.
Following the initial eruption, volcanic ash covered cars of the
nearby small village of Milo, near Catania.
By Monday evening, Mr Behncke tweeted that the crater had
exploded in a "new paroxysmal eruptive episode," releasing
bursts of lava, hot ash and gas.
Several videos shows the volcano continuing to spew bubbling
lava and hot ash into the Sicilian sky throughout this week.
Researchers revealing there has been a "near constant" eruption
over the last few days since it first burst back into life on
the weekend.
Italian authorities swiftly issued an ash advisory for
surrounding cities, and the debris were found as far away as
Fleri, which lies 18 miles from the volcano.
