How The U.S. Fell Behind China In The Fight Against Climate
Change
Ever since President Trump withdrew the U.S. from the
Paris Agreement, China has played an increasingly large role in
the international fight against climate change. The country is
now the world’s largest manufacturer of solar panels, lithium
ion batteries, and electric vehicles. But while China has
stepped up in these regards, it is still the global leader in
carbon emissions, and burns more coal than the rest of the world
combined. As President-elect Joe Biden looks to reassert
American leadership in green energy and climate initiatives, it
remains to be seen whether the U.S. and China can work
collaboratively to address the climate crisis.
Sinkholes increase in Konya Plain
The Konya Plain knows as Turkey's grain store faces
drought due to excessive irrigation. For this reason, sinkholes
in the region continue to threaten farmers. 70 percent of
Konya's population is engaged in agriculture and livestock in
this plain. Seref Kocan is one of the farmers who earn from the
soil. He told us what farming is like with the risk of
sinkholes.

Melting Glaciers and Thawing Permafrost Could Release Ancient
Viruses Locked Away for Thousands of Years
As the planet warms and the ice thaws, scientists warn we
could see the re-emergence of ancient pathogens currently
unknown to science. These viruses, which have laid dormant and
locked away in glaciers and permafrost—permanently frozen
soil—for hundreds if not thousands of years, could "wake up,"
researchers have said.
Earlier this year, scientists analyzing two ice core samples
from Guliya ice cap, Tibet, identified several of such viruses.
One of the core samples dated back 520 years, while the other
held sediments locked away 15,000 years ago. Four of the virus
genera—the taxonomic rank between species and family—were
already known, but 28 had never been seen before.
Trump slams Paris Climate Accord in his last G20 appearance |
G20 Riyadh
Leaders of the world's wealthiest countries are wrapping
up their online G20 summit, hosted by Saudi Arabia in Riyadh. US
President Donald Trump defended his environmental record, and
justified his decision to pull out of the international Paris
climate agreement. The virtual gathering has been dominated by
efforts to end the coronavirus pandemic and the global
recession. A draft declaration shows the biggest economies will
pledge to pay for fair distribution of COVID-19 vaccines and
testing, so that poor countries are not left out. Climate change
and the environment have emerged as another theme as the summit
draws to a close.
Cows and Climate Change
Each year, a single cow will belch about 220 pounds of
methane, which is shorter lived than carbon dioxide but 28 times
more potent in warming the atmosphere, said Mitloehner, a
professor and air quality specialist in the Department of Animal
Science.
How Much Water Does It Take to Make One Steak?
Here's proof that meat wastes water: It takes more than
2,400 gallons of water to produce just 1 pound of meat. Only 25

not showering for six months!
The Bad News? The World Will Begin Running Out of Water By 2050.
The Good News? It’s Not 2050 Yet

warned that the world will begin to run out of fresh water by
2050, and UNFPA's World Population Report from 1992 also warns
of water shortages by 2050.
Biden Names John Kerry as Special Presidential Envoy for Climate
President-elect Joe Biden plans to nominate the first
Latino to lead the Department of Homeland Security and the first
woman to lead the intelligence community as he builds out his
national security team, with formal announcements planned for
Tuesday, his transition team said Monday.
Avril Haines is Biden’s pick to be Director of National
Intelligence, charged with overseeing more than a dozen federal
offices from the CIA to National Security Agency. If confirmed,
she’d be the first woman to serve as director of national
intelligence, a position that was created in the aftermath of
the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.
Biden also plans to name Alejandro Mayorkas, who led the U.S.
Citizenship and Immigration Services agency in the Obama
administration, to lead the Department of Homeland Security.
That’ll make him the first Latino to run a department tasked
with enforcing the nations immigration laws.
Former Secretary of State John Kerry will return as a climate
czar in Biden’s administration, signaling the importance the
incoming administration will put on an issue largely dismissed
by President Donald Trump, who said the Paris climate agreement
was largely designed to undermine American competitiveness.
The Biden transition team’s announcement on Monday didn’t say
who his picks for other key agencies will be, including
secretary of defense.
Biden is building his senior team as President Donald Trump
continues to refuse to concede the election and his
administration declines to cooperate with the president-elect’s
team. Biden’s team is concerned that its lack of access to the
government will hobble security efforts. “We have no time to
lose when it comes to our national security and foreign policy,”
he said in a statement.
40% of World's Plants at Risk of Extinction | NowThis Earth
A new report from Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew — 'State of
the World's Plants and Fungi 2020' — analyzed the human use of
plants and species that could be lost forever.
The report found that approximately 40% of the world's plants
are at risk of extinction.
Plants typically become extinct from loss of natural vegetation
through deforestation, urbanization, and human over-dependence
on a limited number of crops.
