Record cold temperatures and a rare September snow arrive this
week
An early taste of winter with record cold temperatures
and snow -- yes, snow -- is on the way for the Rocky Mountains.
A strong September cold front is set to drop out of Canada in
the beginning of the week, making its presence known from the
Dakotas all the way down to Texas by Wednesday.
This will bring a dramatic temperature swing to a large portion
of the country as many deal with record-breaking, triple-digit
heat over Labor Day weekend.
Nowhere is this temperature roller coaster more pronounced than
in Denver, where a 60-degree drop in the city's high
temperature, from 99 degrees to 37 degrees, is expected in a
mere 48 hours Sunday to Tuesday.
2 million acres burned: Fires ravage Oregon & California
Wildfires burning at historic levels in California are
plaguing the West Coast as other blazes make their way to
Oregon. More than two million acres have burned in California
this summer. Wind has driven the fires, which have forced
evacuations and rescues across the state. An orange glow has
formed over San Francisco because of the smoke. RT America's
Natasha Sweatte reports from Los Angeles. Then University of
Florida Professor of Religion and Nature Bron Taylor
explains.
Wildfires burn out of control throughout California and the
Pacific Northwest
Wildfires are burning out of control throughout
California and the Pacific Northwest. Oregon's wildfires tore
through small cities, forcing thousands of residents to
evacuate. Meanwhile, there were 14,000 firefighters on the lines
in California as 28 wildfires burned out of control. And smoke
from the wildfires has made it's way to some of the West Coast's
biggest cities.
Category 4 Hurricane Delta roars toward Mexico’s Cancun area
CANCUN, Mexico (AP) — Hurricane Delta, a slightly
weakened but still dangerous Category 4 storm, barreled toward
Mexico’s Yucatan peninsula with winds of 130 mph (215 kph) for
an expected landfall south of the Cancun resort before dawn
Wednesday.
Quintana Roo Gov. Carlos Joaquín said the state government had
prepared, but warned residents and tourists that “it is a
strong, powerful hurricane,” though he considered it a good sign
that Delta had weakened a bit late Tuesday. He said the area
hadn’t seen a storm like it since Hurricane Wilma in 2005.
Delta increased in strength by 80 mph in just 24 hours, more
than doubling from a 60 mph storm at 2 p.m. EDT Monday to 140
mph at 2 p.m. EDT Tuesday. Its top winds peaked at 145 mph (230
kph) before weakening slightly late Tuesday as it closed in on
Yucatan.
Animated Maps: California Wildfires from 1910-2019
Wildfires are a fact of life in California—and not a new
one. Living in the state has always meant forging an uneasy
alliance with the natural cycle of fires. What has changed in
recent years is their frequency and ferocity, largely driven by
climate change. In 2018, California experienced the Mendocino
Complex Fire and the Camp Fire—respectively the largest and most
destructive wildfires in the state’s history—but there were over
50 others that year. Collectively, they consumed nearly 1.6
million acres, enough space to hold five cities the size of Los
Angeles.
This animated map displays a century of California wildfires in
under two minutes.
Dozens killed in floods across Southeast Asia and India
Large parts of South and Southeast Asia are reeling from
floods brought on by heavy rains and storms. In central Vietnam,
Hoi An's famous ancient town under water. Close to a million
people in the country are affected and at least 36 people have
died. Over in India record rainfall in the southern state of
Telangana has killed at least 15 people. It's part of a wider
trend in South Asia where more than 9.6 million people have been
affected by severe flooding this year.
