Congo’s Mount Nyiragongo Erupts Near Goma
Congo’s Mount Nyiragongo erupted for the first time in
nearly two decades Saturday, turning the night sky a fiery red
and sending lava onto a major highway as panicked residents
tried to flee Goma, a city of nearly 2 million.
No evacuation order was given by authorities and there was no
immediate word on any casualties.
Witnesses, however, said lava had already engulfed the highway
that connects Goma with the city of Beni in North Kivu province.
Authorities at the Volcano Observation Office in Goma initially
said that the Nyamulagira volcano had erupted Saturday.
However, regional officials later confirmed that the nearby
Nyiragongo volcano also was active.
NOAA Predicts Hurricanes to Pound the Atlantic in 2021
Another overactive hurricane season could be in store for
the Atlantic this year, with government forecasters predicting
as many as 20 named storms after a record number slammed into
the U.S. mainland in 2020.
In all, six to 10 hurricanes could form in the six-month season
that starts June 1, with three to five becoming major systems
packing winds of 111 miles (179 kilometers) per hour or more,
the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said
Thursday. A normal season produces 14 named storms.
2021 could be one of the driest years in a millennium, and
there's no relief in sight
Nearly half of the country — from the Pacific coast to
the Great Plains and upper Midwest — is experiencing moderate to
exceptional drought conditions. That's expected to get worse
throughout the summer. As William Brangham reports, it's the
western states in particular that are taking the hardest hit,
and the possibilities for devastating wildfires are at an
all-time high.
Of course it's often the people least responsible for the
negative effects of Western civilization on the planet that feel
the negative effects of Western culture the most. That's how
Western civilization has always operated....
A leaked UN report warns 'worst is yet to come' on climate
change. Here's how you can help
A leaked draft report from the United Nations'
Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change paints the starkest
picture yet of the accelerating danger caused by human use of
coal, oil, and gas. It warns of coming unlivable heat waves,
widespread hunger and drought, rising sea levels and extinction.
To understand the report's warnings, William Brangham turns to
atmospheric scientist Katharine Hayoe.
A "really big warning" for the planet: Part of Amazon rainforest
is emitting more carbon dioxide …
More than a third of Earth's tropical rainforests are
"completely gone," and half of what remains is in the Amazon.
But now, parts of that jungle are in jeopardy as deforestation
and climate change reduce its ability to absorb carbon dioxide.
Scientists say it's a "really big warning," and if steps aren't
taken soon, "we're going to be in more trouble."
