The perfect storm: Global food prices hit six-year high |
Counting the Cost
Government bond markets have been rattled by fears of
inflation as central banks print money to help governments
through the pandemic.
Investors fearing inflation are looking to mitigate their
exposure by shifting money out of bonds and some stocks. Some of
that money is moving into the dollar and commodities, raising
concerns that speculators may be partly fuelling the rise in
food prices.
We look at what is driving up prices with the United Nations'
Food and Agriculture Organization's senior economist Abdolreza
Abbassian.
Plus, we speak to IHS Markit's senior economist Alisa Strobel
about Ethiopia's search for debt relief.
Australia declares natural disaster over torrential floods | DW
News
Authorities in Australia have declared a natural disaster
after torrential rains caused some of the worst flooding in
decades. People were evacuated from near Sydney as more than 30
centimeters of rain fell on the area in just over a day.
Emergency services are warning of a life-threatening situation.
Much of the state has been affected by dangerous flash flooding.
It's causing widespread damage and is threatening lives.
Emergency services in New South Wales have appealed to people
not to drive through the flood waters.
Record rains have hit most of the state. Some areas are
reporting the worst flooding in half a century, and the
downpours show no signs of abating.
The government is offering financial assistance to people
affected by the floods. Meteorologists are warning that this
extreme weather is set to continue for several days.

The number of wildfires in the western United States—and
the land they demolish—has drastically increased since the
1980s, according to the American Geophysical Union. New research
from the group shows that not only are fires becoming more
frequent in the U.S., but the area burned by high-severity
fires, defined as those that kill more than 95% of trees, is
also increasing.
According to the study, warmer temperatures and drier conditions
account for the uptick in wildfires, which have increased 8-fold
from 1985 to 2017. The area burned by high-severity wildfires
increased by more than 450,000 acres during this 40-year window.
The severity of these wildfires is affecting the trees that
evolved to cope with low-intensity fires, causing even the most
well-adapted species of trees to die out.
Sean Parks, a research ecologist who led the study, said, ‘One
take home message is that fire severity is elevated in warmer
and drier years in the western U.S., and we expect that climate
change will result in even warmer and drier years in the
future.’

In Kyoto this year, the cherry blossom season peaked on
March 26. Research shows that this is the earliest peak since
812, when records began. The previous record for earliest peak
flowering was in 1409, when the season peaked on March 27.
Scientists have tied early blossoming to warmer temperatures
associated with climate change. Since 1850, the average
temperature in Kyoto has increased by 6 degrees Fahrenheit; the
average flowering date has shifted from April 17 to April 5 in
that time. This temporal shift has been mirrored by the cherry
trees in Washington, D.C. Since the National Park Service began
keeping record in 1921, the average peak flowering date has
advanced from about April 5 to March 31.
In Japan, the peak season is important both economically and
culturally as people picnic under the trees and celebrate the
coming of spring. Early blooming in America puts the trees at
risk of a spring freeze. It could also damage the relationship
between pollinators and trees if the trees bloom before insects
such as bees are active.
St Vincent volcano: Power cuts after another 'explosive event'
There has been another "explosive event" at a volcano on
the Caribbean island of St Vincent, with power outages and water
supplies cut off.
The La Soufrière volcano first erupted on Friday, blanketing the
island in a layer of ash and forcing some 16,000 people to
evacuate their homes.
Residents in Barbados, nearly 200km (about 124 miles) to the
east, have also been urged to stay indoors.
Scientists warn that eruptions could continue for days - or even
weeks.
Earth’s Orbital Shifts May Have Triggered Ancient Global Warming
A study combining astronomical and geologic data hints at
an extraterrestrial cause for extreme climate change 56 million
years ago.

Some 56 million years ago, during the transition between
the Paleocene and Eocene epochs, Earth caught a fever. In a span
of scarcely 20,000 years—not even a rounding error in most
measures of geologic time—massive amounts of carbon dioxide
flowed into the atmosphere, and average temperatures rose by
five to eight degrees Celsius. The planet was transformed.
Crocodiles basked on Arctic beaches lined with palm trees, and
steamy swamps and jungles stretched across much of the
midlatitudes. Such “hyperthermal” events periodically come and
go throughout Earth’s history, but this one was particularly
intense for unclear reasons. For decades, researchers have
puzzled over what triggered this Paleocene-Eocene Thermal
Maximum (PETM), peering through the lens of the past to better
understand our planet’s present-day warming. A surge in volcanic
eruptions likely played a role, perhaps aided by a comet impact.
But a new study suggests the PETM may have been instigated by
subtle shifts in Earth’s orbit around the sun.
