Live updates | Airstrikes ravage swaths of Gaza after Israeli
       troops and tanks briefly enter
       [quote]
More airstrikes have ravaged swaths of the Gaza Strip, and
residents are running out of food, water and other supplies. The
bombardment continued as the Israeli military said its troops
and tanks briefly entered northern Gaza to prepare for a
       full-scale incursion
A senior Hamas official told The Associated Press that the
Palestinian militant group needs greater intervention from its
allies, including Iran-backed Hezbollah in Lebanon, in its war
       with Israel.
The war, now in its 20th day, is the deadliest of five Gaza wars
       for both sides.

Hezbollah, Hamas, Islamic Jihad chiefs discuss route to
       ‘victory’ on Israel
       [quote]
The head of Lebanon’s Hezbollah armed group has met top
Palestinian armed group leaders from Hamas and the Islamic
Jihad, discussing what their alliance must do to achieve an
“all-out victory” over Israel, according to a statement by
       Hezbollah.
The statement said Wednesday’s meeting involved Hezbollah’s
Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, Hamas deputy chief Saleh al-Arouri and
Islamic Jihad chief Ziad al-Nakhala, without mentioning the
       location.
“Sayyed Nasrallah assessed with Nakhale and al-Arouri the
international and regional stances as well as steps to be taken
by the Axis of Resistance in this critical phase in order to
achieve an all-out victory and to stop the brutal attack on the
oppressed people of Gaza and the West Bank,” the statement
       added.
Since the October 7 attack, Hezbollah has had near-daily
exchanges of fire with Israeli forces along the Israeli-Lebanese
       border.
The Lebanese group announced on Wednesday that two more of its
fighters had been killed, increasing the death toll in its ranks
to 40 fighters since the start of the conflict.
On Tuesday, the health ministry said that 704 Palestinians,
including 305 children, were killed as Israel ramps up its
       aggression against the enclave.
The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said
Tuesday’s death toll was the highest figure reported in a single
       day since the conflict began.
In the occupied West Bank, at least 100 people have also been
killed in clashes with the Israeli military, the Palestinian
       health ministry said.
Amid fearsthat the conflict could spill over across the Middle
East, Israel’s military said its jets also hit Syrian army
infrastructure in response to rockets launched from the
       neighbouring country.
While the military did not provide further details, it did not
accuse Syria’s army of firing the two rockets.
Syrian state news agency (SANA) said, citing a military source,
that the Israeli attack killed eight soldiers and wounded seven
near the southwestern city of Deraa

Israeli army says ground forces are 'expanding' activities in
       Gaza, where internet has collapsed
       [quote]
Internet and phone services collapsed in the Gaza Strip under
intensified bombardment Friday night, largely cutting off its
2.3 million people from the outside world and each other, as
Israel's military said it was "expanding" its ground operations
       in the besieged territory.
The military's announcement signalled it was moving closer to an
all-out invasion of Gaza, where it has vowed to crush the ruling
Hamas group after its bloody incursion in southern Israel three
       weeks ago
Frequent explosions from airstrikes lit up the sky over Gaza
City after nightfall Friday, when the black-out in internet,
cellular and landline services hit. The Red Crescent said it
lost all contact with its operations room and medical teams. It
said it feared people would no longer be able to contact
ambulance services. Other aid groups said they were unable to
       reach staff on the ground.
Israeli military spokesman, Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari, said ground
forces were "expanding their activity" in Gaza and that it "is
acting with great force ... to achieve the objectives of the
       war."
Defense Minister Yoav Gallant told a small group of foreign
reporters that Israel expects a long and difficult ground
offensive into Gaza soon. It "will take a long time" to
dismantle Hamas' vast network of tunnels, he said, adding that
he expected a lengthy phase of lower-intensity fighting as
       Israel destroys "pockets of resistance."
how Hamas' defeat will be measured and an invasion's endgame
       remain unclear.

       [quote]
Explosions from continuous airstrikes lit up the sky over Gaza
City for hours after nightfall. The Palestinian telecom
provider, Paltel, said the bombardment caused “complete
disruption” of internet, cellular and landline services. The
cutoff meant that casualties from strikes and details of ground
incursions could not immediately be known. Some satellite phones
       continued to function.
Already plunged into darkness after most electricity was cut off
weeks ago, Palestinians were thrown into isolation, huddling in
homes and shelters with food and water supplies running out.
Relatives outside Gaza panicked after their messaging chats with
families inside suddenly went dead and calls stopped going
       through.
“We’ve been seeing these horrible things and massacres when it’s
live on TV, so now what will happen when there’s a total
       blackout?” she said
Israeli military spokesman Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari said ground
       forces were “expanding their activity”
The Hamas media center reported heavy nighttime clashes with
Israeli forces at several places, including what it said was an
Israeli incursion east of the refugee camp of Bureij in the
       central Gaza Strip.
Israel has amassed hundreds of thousands of troops along the
border ahead of an expected ground offensive.
The Palestinian death toll in Gaza has soared past 7,300, more
than 60% of them minors and women, according to the territory’s
       Health Ministry.
His comments pointed to a potentially grueling and open-ended
new phase of the war after three weeks of relentless
       bombardment.
U.S. allies and ones that have reached peace deals or normalized
ties with Israel — have raised increasing alarm over a potential
ground invasion, likely to bring even higher casualties amid
       urban fighting.
Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi warned on X that the
“outcome will be a humanitarian catastrophe of epic proportions
       for years to come.”
The Committee to Protect Journalists expressed alarm, saying the
world “is losing a window into the reality” of the conflict.
In New York City, hundreds of protesters calling for a
cease-fire filled the famed Grand Central Terminal during rush
hour Friday, wearing T-shirts saying "Jews say cease-fire now”
and “Not in our name.” Many were detained and removed, their
hands zip-tied behind their backs. Police couldn’t immediately
       provide a number of arrests.

Israeli says it is expanding its ground operation in Gaza after
       knocking out communications
       [quote]
Israel said Saturday it is expanding its ground operation in
Gaza with infantry and armored vehicles backed by “massive”
strikes from the air and sea, including the bombing of Hamas
tunnels — a key target in its campaign to crush the territory’s
       ruling group
The Israeli military released grainy images of tank columns
moving slowly in open areas of Gaza and said warplanes bombed
dozens of Hamas tunnels and underground bunkers.
“The forces are still on the ground and are continuing the war,”
the army spokesman, Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari, said Saturday,
indicating that the next stage has begun in what is expected to
evolve into an all-out ground offensive in northern Gaza.
Until now, troops have conducted brief nightly ground incursions
       before returning to Israel.
Hagari said the ground forces were backed by what he described
as massive strikes from the air and sea. He said two more key
Hamas military commanders were killed overnight, arguing that
Israel was facing a “weakened” enemy. There was no immediate
       confirmation from Hamas.
The near-blackout of information from Gaza enabled the military
to largely control the narrative during a key new phase in
       fighting.
He dismissed media reports about a possible cease-fire deal in
exchange for the release of hostages as a “cynical
exploitation,” first and foremost by Hamas, of the anxiety of
       the relatives of hostages.
Israel has said it aims to crush Hamas’ rule in Gaza and its
       ability to threaten Israel.

PRESS GROUP SAYS THE PAST 3 WEEKS HAVE BEEN DEADLIEST PERIOD FOR

The Committee to Protect Journalists says the past three weeks
have been the deadliest on record for journalists covering
conflict since the organization started tracking in 1992.
The organization said in a statement Friday that at least 29
journalists have died covering the Israel-Hamas war since it
ignited Oct. 7, including 24 Palestinians, four Israelis and 1
Lebanese. Additionally, 8 other journalists were reported
injured and 9 were reported missing or detained.
CPJ also criticized the cutting of communications services in
the Gaza Strip, warning that the blackout is also a “news
blackout” that has compromised the public’s ability to “know and
understand what is happening in this conflict.”
White House National Security spokesman John Kirby repeatedly
refused to comment on Israel saying its ground forces were
expanding activity in Gaza and also refused to comment on what a
satisfactory long-term objective might be for the fighting.
“We’re not drawing red lines for Israel,” Kirby said Friday on a
       call with reporters.
“It doesn’t only mean that Gaza is isolated from the world but
also it means people can’t connect to each other.

  HTML https://www.aljazeera.com/opinions/2023/10/28/hamass-attack-on-israel-has-changed-the-middle-east
Hamas’s attack on Israel has changed the Middle East
       [quote]
The Hamas attack has not only changed the path of the
Palestine-Israel conflict, but also the dynamics of the whole
Middle East. It has left the US strategy of de-escalation in the
region in shambles, put Arab governments and Iran in a difficult
position and opened the door for greater Chinese and Russian
       involvement.
On the other hand, Israel’s indiscriminate killing of
Palestinian civilians has angered the Arab public and also put
pressure on Arab governments to take action in solidarity with
the Palestinians. There are already signs that the weight of
public opinion is pushing Arab leaders to go against US wishes.
The massacre in al-Ahli Baptist Hospital on October 17 prompted
       sharp condemnations from Arab states
During a UNSC session on October 24 to debate the situation in
Gaza the foreign ministers of Egypt, Jordan and Saudi Arabia –
all close US allies – strongly condemned Israel and called for
an immediate ceasefire. A day later, the UAE, along with China
and Russia vetoed a US resolution that did not call for a
       cessation of fighting.
For the time being, pro-US Arab governments are resorting to
strong rhetoric to quell public anger. But if Israel continues
its deadly assault on Gaza, words will not be enough – they will
have to take action by reversing normalisation with Israel,
       which could anger the US.
A lack of action by Arab leaders to protect Palestinians could
lead to a new wave of regional instability.
Israel has declared that the goal of its war on Gaza is to
dismantle the Palestinian resistance group – ie, carry out
       regime change in the strip.
There is a real possibility that the conflict will widen to
include Lebanon, Syria, Yemen and Iraq and trigger mass upheaval
in the rest of the Arab world.
