Biden says West Bank settlers ‘pouring gasoline on fire’ as
Israel prepares for Gaza ground invasion
Joe Biden has called for an immediate end to Israeli settler
attacks on Palestinians in the West Bank, as Israel kept up its
strikes on Gaza in preparation for a long promised ground
invasion.
Speaking at a joint press conference with the Australian prime
minister, Anthony Albanese, the president said US support for
Israel’s defence was ironclad, but criticised the treatment of
Palestinians in the West Bank by some Israelis.
“I continue to be alarmed about extremist settlers attacking
Palestinians in the West Bank … pouring gasoline on fire is what
it’s like.
“They’re attacking Palestinians in places that they [the
Palestinians] are entitled to be, and … it has to stop now.”
With tens of thousands of troops massed at the Gaza border,
prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel was “raining down
hellfire,” and that a ground offensive was being prepared.
“I cannot say when, how or how many, nor all the elements that
we are taking into account, of which most are not known to the
public,” he added.

UN warns Gaza blockade could force it to sharply cut relief
missions as Israeli bombings rise
The U.N. warned Wednesday that it is on the verge of running out
of fuel in the Gaza Strip, forcing it to sharply curtail relief
efforts in the territory blockaded and devastated by Israeli
airstrikes since Hamas militants launched an attack on Israel
more than two weeks ago.
The warning came as hospitals in Gaza struggled to treat masses
of wounded with dwindling resources. Meanwhile, the U.N.’s top
official faced backlash from Israel after saying the Hamas
massacre that sparked the fighting did not “take place in a
vacuum.”
Health officials said the death toll was soaring as Israeli jets
pounded Gaza. Workers pulled dead and wounded civilians,
including many children, out of landscapes of rubble in cities
across the territory.
Gaza’s Health Ministry, which is controlled by Hamas, said more
than 750 people were killed over the past 24 hours.
The rising death toll in Gaza — following a reported 704 killed
the day before — was unprecedented in the decades-long
Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Even greater loss of life could
come if Israel launches an expected ground offensive aimed at
crushing Hamas, an Islamic militant group sworn to Israel’s
destruction.
At Gaza City’s al-Shifa Hospital, the lack of medicine and clean
water have led to “alarming” infection rates, the group Doctors
Without Borders said. Amputations are often required to prevent
infection from spreading in the wounded, it said.
One surgeon with the group described amputating half the foot of
a 9-year-old boy with “slight sedation” on a hallway floor as
his mother and sister watched.
“It’s time to teach them a lesson,” Erdan told Army Radio,
accusing the U.N. chief of justifying a slaughter.

Israel Hamas war: Israeli tanks hit Gaza, settler attacks in
West Bank, Middle East economies threat
All the latest developments from the Israel Hamas war.
Israeli tanks raid Gaza
Israel's army says it has carried out an operation in northern
Gaza in preparation for the next stages of combat.
In a post on social media site X, it said IDF tanks and infantry
struck "numerous terrorist cells, infrastructure and anti-tank
missile posts."
Soldiers are said to have returned to Israeli territory.
On Wednesday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu
confirmed his country was preparing a ground invasion of Gaza,
and that "we are working against the clock" in preparations to
destroy Hamas.
"We are in a war for our sovereignty, for our existence, and we
have set ourselves two fundamental objectives: to eradicate
Hamas's military and governmental capabilities and to do
everything possible to bring the hostages held by the
Palestinian Islamist group back home," Netanyahu said in a
televised address.
UN fails to pass resolution on Israel Hamas war - again
The UN Security Council has failed to address the Israeli-Hamas
war in Gaza, rejecting rival United States and Russian
resolutions.
Fighting could threaten already fragile Middle Eastern economies
Economic crises are rippling through countries bordering Israel,
raising the possibility of a chain reaction from the war with
Hamas.

Israel launches brief ground raid into northern Gaza
The Israeli military says its troops and tanks briefly entered
northern Gaza overnight into Thursday, engaging with Hamas
fighters and targeting anti-tank weapons in order to "prepare
the battlefield" before an expected ground offensive.
The Israeli raid came after more than two weeks of devastating
airstrikes that have left thousands dead and more than one
million displaced from their homes in the small, densely
populated territory.
Arab leaders made a joint plea Thursday for a ceasefire to end
civilian suffering and allow humanitarian aid into Gaza
Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari, a military spokesperson, said the
incursion was "part of our preparations for the next stages of
the war."
The warning by the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA,
over depleting fuel supplies raised alarm that the humanitarian
crisis could quickly worsen.
"The hospitals will not be able to deliver lifesaving services
nor keep the life support machines nor the incubators on if they
do not receive fuel that will help their generators generate
electricity for all these machines," said Tamara Alrifai, a
spokesperson for the UN Relief and Works Agency.
"We are very, very, very worried about the inability of
hospitals to continue receiving war wounded, pregnant women that
need to deliver or all kinds of other sick people in need of
help."
An official with the International Committee of the Red Cross
said it hopes to bring in nearly a half dozen trucks filled with
vital medical supplies.
"This is a small amount of what is required, a drop in the
ocean," said William Schomburg, head of the sub-delegation in
Gaza.
"We are trying to establish a pipeline."
"The right to self defence by the United Nations Charter does
not justify blatant violations of humanitarian and international
law," said the statement, signed by Egypt, Jordan, Bahrain, The
United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar, Kuwait and
Morocco.

“Beyond worst case scenario”: The situation on the ground in
Gaza | DW News
The humanitarian organization CARE has issued a statement saying
what's happening in Gaza now is beyond what it envisioned as the
worst case scenario.
The Israeli military says its ground forces carried out an
operation inside the Gaza Strip, attacking multiple Hamas
targets before withdrawing.
The Israeli Air Force (IAF) said it attacked "over 250 targets"
belonging to the Hamas Islamist militant group in the Gaza Strip
over the past day.
In a post on social media platform X, formerly Twitter, the IAF
said its fighter aircraft struck what it called "terrorist
infrastructure," tunnel shafts and rocket launchers, which it
said was situated in "a civilian environment."
Israel has been bombarding the Palestinian territory, with the
military saying it is targeting Hamas. The persistent airstrikes
have worsened the humanitarian situation for more than 2 million
residents in the Gaza Strip.
The action taken against Hamas has been in response to the
large-scale terror attack the group launched on southern Israel
on October 7.

The Hamas tunnel city beneath Gaza: a hidden frontline for
Israel
What lies in wait for Israeli ground troops in Gaza, security
sources say, is a Hamas tunnel network hundreds of kilometres
long and up to 80 metres deep, described by one freed hostage as
"a spider's web" and by one expert as the "Viet Cong times 10".
The Palestinian Islamist group has different kinds of tunnels
running beneath the sandy 360-sq-km coastal strip and its
borders - including attack, smuggling, storage and operational
burrows, Western and Middle East sources familiar with the
matter said.
The United States believes Israel's special forces will face an
unprecedented challenge having to battle Hamas militants while
trying to avoid killing hostages held below ground, a U.S.
official said.
U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin noted that Iraq's
nine-month-long battle to retake the city of Mosul from Islamic
State might prove to have been easier than what awaits the
Israelis - likely to be "a lot of IEDs (improvised explosive
devices), a lot of booby traps, and just a really grinding
activity".
Even though Israel has invested heavily in tunnel detection -
including a sensor-equipped underground barrier it called an
"iron wall" - Hamas is still thought to have working tunnels to
the outside world.
After the last round of hostilities in 2021, Hamas's leader in
Gaza, Yehya Al-Sinwar, said: "They started saying they destroyed
100kms of Hamas tunnels. I am telling you, the tunnels we have
in the Gaza Strip exceed 500kms. Even if their narrative is
true, they only destroyed 20% of the tunnels."
Hamas believes that with Israel's overwhelming aerial and
armoured military superiority, tunnels are a way to cut some of
those advantages by forcing Israel's soldiers to move
underground in cramped spaces the Hamas fighters know well.
Israeli security sources say Israel's heavy aerial bombardments
have caused little damage to the tunnel infrastructure
The tunnel network is a key reason why Hamas is stronger in Gaza
than in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, where Israel's
settlements, military bases and monitoring devices make it
harder to get anything in from Jordan.
TUNNEL HUNTING
Among the elite units tasked with going underground is Yahalom,
specialist commandos from Israel's Combat Engineering Corps
known as the "weasels", who specialise in finding, clearing and
destroying the tunnels.
When a people is constantly oppressed on their land, they are
forced to live underground.

this, can be of no great use to the owner, or his party, after
it has been often practised and is become notorious; but they
are widely mistaken. Few lies carry the inventor's mark, and the
most prostitute enemy to truth, may spread a thousand without
being known for the author: besides, as the vilest writer has
his readers, so the greatest liar has his believers: and it
often happens, that if a lie be believed only for an hour, it

Falshood flies, and truth comes limping after it; so that when
