A Shaken Israel Is Forced Back to Its Eternal Dilemma
The attack by Hamas forces Israel once again to confront the
conflict that has haunted it since the creation of the modern
state.
The most sweeping invasion of Israeli territory in decades,
conducted by a Hamas force that had been widely seen as a ragtag
collection of militants, has delivered a psychological shock to
Israel so great that its very foundations are being questioned:
its army, its intelligence services, its government and its
capacity to control the millions of Palestinians in its midst.
the sight of villages once again overrun, hostages seized and
desperate civilians being killed by Palestinian militants has
awakened a kind of primal dread.
“Israelis are shaken to the core,” said Yuval Shany, a professor
of international law at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
Its wealth, vibrant start-up culture and increasing acceptance
in the Middle East could not forever mask a fundamental Israeli
instability. Now the shock to its self-image is so great that,
after the initial rallying to the flag, Israel could be
projected into a period of profound social and political
turbulence.
For many years the assumption had grown within Israel that the
Palestinian question had become a nonissue and that a policy of
tactical procrastination, as Israeli settlements in the West
Bank grew ever larger, would ensure that no Palestinian state
ever came into being.
The Palestinian issue all but disappeared from the global
agenda. There was talk of a new Middle East.
All this, however, could not hide the elephant in the room: the
growing Palestinian fury at humiliation and marginalization that
had already led to a spike in West Bank violence this year.
It was a failure on the part of the world to address the
conflict.[It's OK for failure to be white]
Mr. Netanyahu never wanted to listen to such warnings or engage
in serious talks for a two-state peace. The consequences of that
policy could not forever be waved away in talk of a shiny new
Middle East.

Israel can't defeat Hezbollah: Israeli expert

Netanyahu vows to 'crush and destroy' Hamas ahead of expected
ground offensive into Gaza
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Wednesday that
Israel would "crush and destroy" Hamas in response to its attack
last Saturday.
During a late-night televised address, Netanyahu said every
Hamas member was a "dead man."
His comments came as Israeli warplanes pounded Gaza in response
to the unprecedented attack, ahead of a possible ground
offensive to root out Hamas, with an estimated 250,000 people
made homeless in the Palestinian-controlled territory, many
huddling on streets or in schools.
Israel said dozens of its fighter jets struck more than 200
targets in a neighbourhood of Gaza City
Former defence minister Benny Gantz, a centrist opposition
leader, spoke live on Israeli television alongside Netanyahu and
Defence Minister Yoav Gallant after forming a war cabinet
focused entirely on the conflict.
"Our partnership is not political, it is a shared fate," said
Gantz. "At this time we are all the soldiers of Israel."
Netanyahu said the people of Israel and its leadership were
united. "We have put aside all differences because the fate of
our state is on the line," he said.
Gallant on Tuesday promised a ground attack in Gaza at an
unspecified time.
"What was in Gaza will no longer be," he said.
The Israeli government is under intense public pressure to
topple Hamas after its militants stormed through a boundary
fence Saturday and massacred hundreds of Israelis in their
homes, on the streets and at an outdoor music festival.
Canadian Asia Mathkour has lived in Gaza since 2014. She's been
forced to relocate five times already since Saturday with her
two children, aged four and two, to escape the bombing.
She told CBC News that there is just no place safe to go, that
virtually every neighbourhood, every building is demolished, and
that the threat of a ground invasion is scary.
"People didn't expect this kind of bombs dropping on us. It's
not normal," she said. "People are losing their homes, their
mother, their children, their spouse. Everything. People are in
shock. Everybody is in shock."
"No place is safe in Gaza, as you see they hit everywhere," said
Ala Abu Tair, 35, who had sought shelter there with his family
after fleeing Abassan Al-Kabira near the border.
Israel's security minister said he was stepping up the issuing
of firearms to licensed citizens
Egypt's shared border closed
The U.S. said it was talking with Israel and Egypt about the
idea of creating a safe passage for civilians out of Gaza at the
Rafa border crossing. The crossing remained shut on Wednesday
Egypt confirmed it has discussed plans with the U.S. and others
to provide humanitarian aid through its border with Gaza Strip
but said it rejects any move to set up safe corridors for
refugees fleeing the enclave, Egyptian security sources said on
Wednesday.
One of the security sources, who asked not to be identified,
said the safe corridors were rejected to protect "the right of
Palestinians to hold onto their cause and their land."

Israel has declared war on Hamas. But these are the other fronts
it may face
Wednesday sees multiple reminders of the risk in the north from
a Hezbollah attack. But analysts warn of other possible battles.
Israel is marching to war with Hamas with one eye peering
existentially over its shoulder at the threat of Iranian-backed
militant groups in neighbouring Lebanon and Syria that could be
ordered to join the conflict at any moment.
Mideast observers say the risk of an escalation, bringing a
range of fighters and Islamic militant groups to the side of
Hamas, the Palestinian organization that carried out the brazen
strikes and horrid massacres last weekend from its base in the
Gaza Strip, is dangerously real.

Comment:
As a general rule of thumb hostage exchanges are a bad
idea because it promotes hostage-taking but in this case the IDF
is desperate for intelligence. A nice friendly prisoner exchange
instantly gives value to all the other hostages but exchanges
should not be the end game.
As sure as the sun rises Israel is going to overplay their hand
and world opinion will shift. I have not forgotten the slaughter
on the right of return marches or the use of helicopter gunships
in urban areas. The Israelis have put their thumb on Gaza so
hard that life there has no meaning so you get a lot of
desperate people doing desperate things.
It appears that their crushing blockade has accomplished little
other than make life difficult for the Palestinians they have no
shortage of those oversized bottle rockets they keep firing.
Sure Hamas can control all the goods and services when you have
conveniently narrowed access to a trickle at two points. "The
more you tighten your grip, Tarkin, the more star systems will
slip through your fingers."
Israeli bombardment 'recurring nightmare' for Gaza residents
After a massive Hamas [s]terror[/s] attack against Israel, the
civilian population in the Gaza Strip is paying a high price.
Hundreds of thousands have fled within a territory under
constant shelling as Israel retaliates.
Violence has broken out between Israel, Hamas and other militant
Palestinian groups numerous times before, but this time
everything is different.
Israel has been bombarding the isolated coastal strip
There's no power, no internet, only little water. Is it not
enough that we've been living under a blockade for 15 or 16
years? What will be next?"
On Monday, Israel's Defense Minister Yoav Gallant announced a
"total blockade" of Gaza and discontinued supplies of
electricity, food and fuel from Israel to the sealed-off
territory. Usually, food and fuel enter Gaza via Israel's Kerem
Shalom crossing, where all imports are subject to thorough
checks. Even drinking water — which the Palestinian National
Authority buys in Israel for residents in the Gaza Strip — is no
longer supplied.
Israeli human rights organizations such as Gisha, which champion
freedom of movement for Palestinians, has criticized Israel's
retaliatory measures as collective punishment and a "total
disregard of the civilian population."
The deep-seated fear and trauma of past wars haunts many people
in Gaza. "It's a constantly recurring nightmare," says El
Athamnah, who first lost his home in the three-week Gaza War
that took place in 2008-2009.
"We don't feel safe even here — and who knows what's still
ahead," says El Athamna, adding that Israel's current airstrikes
are more intense and more severe than anything he has witnessed
before.

Hamas Asks Gaza to Defy Evac Order, Israel Seeks "Clear" China
Condemnation, Nasrallah-Iran FM Meet
Israel’s military has admitted it would take time for
Palestinians to follow its orders to evacuate north Gaza. IDF
says Israel's military is aware that evacuating 1.1 million
people from northern Gaza - as Israel has called for - will take
some time.
“I will not say [if] it’s an accurate time,” Hagari added when
asked to confirm the army had informed UN officials Palestinians
had 24 hours to flee
Meanwhile, Hamas has called on Palestinian residents to defy an
Israeli order to evacuate the northern part of the Gaza Strip.
“We tell the people of northern Gaza and from Gaza City, stay
put in your homes, and your places”, Hamas Spokesperson Eyad
Al-Bozom said.
Israel expressed “deep disappointment” in a call with the
Chinese envoy to the Middle East over China’s lack of
condemnation of Hamas’s attack. According to the ministry, the
Chinese statements "do not provide a clear and unambiguous
condemnation of the horrific terrorist acts.”

Putin Likens Israel's Gaza Actions To Nazi Leningrad Siege,
Slams Settlers, China Cries "Injustice"
Russia’s President has warned of "absolutely
unacceptable" levels of civilian casualties if Israel decides to
go ahead with its Gaza invasion. The Russian president also
invoked the Nazi siege of Leningrad during World War 2 in his
strongest criticism of Israel's blockade of Gaza yet. "There is
talk of military and non-military measures being taken against
the Gaza Strip, as was the case during the siege of Leningrad in
the Second World War. We know what that means, don't we? And I
think it is unacceptable," Putin said. Meanwhile, Moscow's ally
China highlighted the “persistent failure to do justice to the
Palestinian people” in calling for peace talks to resolve the
issue. Hamas asked residents to stay put as the Israeli army
dropped flyers on Gaza warning residents to flee “immediately”
to the south.
