I do not see a problem with US leftists praising Liu for being
anti-Trump. In fact, I would like to see China proactively
praising Liu as a true American, thereby implying that US
leftists are the true Americans. Unfortunately, "New China" is

So long as this continues, can we blame US leftists for finding
it hard to like China?
In fact, the only difference is that whereas US rightists have
no problem with US-origin athletes representing other countries
so long as these countries are Western (as Fiorentini accurately
pointed out), "New China" attacks Chinese-origin athletes
representing other countries even if these countries are

I agree that the reporter's question was not offensive, and that
so many felt offended by it is a problem with the entire "New
China" mentality that will keep US-China relations inside a
vicious cycle of negativity.
I also suspect that Gu being given the prestige that she has in
China is itself a symptom of Eurocentrism. The US-born athletes
mentioned in the previous post who choose to represent
UK/Sweden/etc. are not especially prestigious in those
countries. Why is Gu so prestigious in China (above even other
athletes representing China with more medals than her)? I think
we all know why.

The US disrupted the expected line of succession outlined above
by refusing to pass the pole to Japan following the end of the
Cold War, instead pre-emptively using:
