But the only true way to ensure there is no need to choose
between the US and China is when the two are explicitly on the
same side. This requires a credible common enemy.

The problem with this approach is that it is about "keeping
China in check" as opposed to positively helping China. Yes, we
should ensure Russia is defeated, but not only in Ukraine, but
also in Outer Manchuria (which is far more valuable than Taiwan
materially). Russia is still defeated, but the narrative changes
completely, especially if the US sends weapons to help China
take back its territory the same way it is currently sending
weapons to help Ukraine take back its territory.

Many people these days (including Biden?!) erroneously presume
that the US had maintained diplomatic relations with Taiwan
throughout the decades since establishing diplomatic relations
with China. This is not true; it was Trump who dug this back up
out of nowhere:
