       > TIJUANA/OAXACA CITY, Mexico (Reuters) - African migrants and
asylum seekers heading to the United States are flying into
Nicaragua to bypass the Darien Gap, a dangerous jungle isthmus
connecting Panama and Colombia, according to migrants
interviewed by Reuters and exclusive U.N. data.
       >
       > A dozen migrants recently arrived in the Mexican northern
border city of Tijuana and the southern city of Oaxaca said they
had flown into the Central American country, where many African
nationalities can obtain a low-cost visa.
       >
       > The migrants hailed from Mali, Angola, Guinea and Senegal, and
almost all said they knew about the dangers of Darien, which can
       only be traversed on foot.
       >
       > Several said they had gone to Nicaragua after hearing macabre
stories of people who had faced Darien's deadly perils.
       > ...
       > In a statement to Reuters, the IOM previewed the findings of
the report, including that "African and Cuban migrants are
increasingly choosing air routes to reach Central American
       countries, avoiding the Darien jungle."
       > ...
       > Meanwhile, an unprecedented number of migrants have entered
Mexico from other continents, as the trek to the U.S. southern
border increasingly becomes a global migration route sought by
people fleeing violence, economic distress and the growing
impacts of climate change in Africa, Asia and Latin America.

       --- Quote ---
       > The infamous Darien Gap between Colombia and Panama is the
only land route from South America that leads north in the
direction of the US. That's why hundreds of thousands of
migrants make the dangerous crossing every year. The risks are
enormous - many are robbed or sexually assaulted. The terrain is
       extremely dangerous.

       Finally concerted government action:

       through from Darien Gap
       >
       > PANAMA CITY (AP) — Panama and Costa Rica announced a plan to
quickly bus thousands of migrants through Panama to the Costa
Rican border, as the countries continue to grapple with a steady
increase in the number of migrants moving through the
       jungle-clad Darien Gap.
       >
       > Panama estimates that 420,700 migrants have crossed the Gap
from Colombia to Panama so far this year, making it likely the
full-year number will top a half million.
       >
       > Industrial-scale smuggling operations in Colombia have now
reduced the dangerous crossing to a little over two days for the
strongest walkers. The expedited bus service in Panama will
likely decrease further the amount of time migrants take to
reach the U.S. border, now down to about two and a half weeks.
       >
       > Panama hopes the new plan will disrupt the smuggling networks
that charge migrants to get through the country
       >

As I have always said, the best way to discourage refugee
reliance on smugglers is for governments to offer better and
cheaper services than the smugglers offer.

Venezuelans, Ecuadorians and Haitians, crossing the Darién Gap
during the first nine months of this year, according to
Panamanian immigration authorities. Chinese migrants using this
route fly to Ecuador and then make their way north to the
       U.S.-Mexico border.
       > ...
       > The Darien Gap route is viable for Chinese immigrants because
they can fly into Ecuador without a visa. From Quito, they join
Latin Americans to travel through the once-impenetrable Darién
and across several Central American countries before reaching
the U.S. border. The journey is well-known enough it has its own
name in Chinese: walk the line, or 'zouxian.'
