Better than nothing:
HTML https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/01/19/channel-migrants-given-right-to-work/
Channel migrants have been quietly given the right to
work in sectors including care, construction and agriculture and
can still retain access to state-subsidised bed and board under
a Home Office scheme.
Nearly 16,000 asylum seekers, including those who crossed the
Channel in small boats, have been allowed to work in a single
year, according to data obtained under Freedom of Information
(FOI) laws.
They have been allowed to work in occupations in which there are
recognised staff shortages, and are paid 80 per cent of the
going pay rate.
...
The scheme allowing asylum seekers to take jobs after a year is
a legacy of an EU law from 2005, which reversed a measure
introduced by Sir Tony Blair in 2002 barring illegal migrants
from any right to work.
16000 is of course a ridiculously small number:
Immigration experts believe the number of working asylum
seekers for 2023 could have increased even further because of
the extra demand for cheap foreign labour to plug staff
shortages in care homes, the NHS, construction and agriculture.
Backlogs of asylum seekers waiting over a year rose to 61,000
last year.
...
They have cited the potential economic benefits in boosting
growth and savings from migrants no longer receiving state
benefits and free accommodation and instead paying income tax on
their earnings.
Peter Walsh, a senior researcher with the Migration
Oberservatory at Oxford University, said he was surprised at the
numbers granted but suggested it could be linked to the widening
of the shortage occupation list to include care workers, where
there was acuted demand for staff.
He said there were economic benefits in that it would reduce the
cost of accommodation and asylum support as well as generating
money for the Exchequer via taxes. “There are psychological
positives because it is not very good for people to be out of
the labour market,” he said.
“The longer people are out of the labour market, the harder it
is for them to get back into the labour market. There is also
another practical advantage that if you allow people to work
legally, they are less likely to work illegally. It is
potentially protecting against that.”
Who could possibly be against such obvious reasoning?
Miriam Cates, who co-chairs the New Conservatives Group
of MPs, which has campaigned for a tougher approach to
migration, said: “It’s understandable that asylum seekers might
want to have a job while waiting for their claims to be
processed.
“But we cannot solve the significant problems associated with
irregular migration unless we deter people from crossing to the
UK illegally – and this is the opposite of a deterrent.”
Cates also looks like what we would expect:
Former British Prime Minister Liz Truss said Monday that
it “has to be” former President Trump in the White House after
the 2024 election, endorsing Trump for the office while laying
criticism on President Biden.
“I don’t think Biden has been particularly supportive to the
United Kingdom. I think he’s often on the side of the [European
Union],” Truss said on British news radio station LBC. “And I
certainly think I would like to see a new president in the White
House.”
Truss, the shortest-serving prime minister in the country’s
history, has been a major backer of American conservative
politics since leaving 10 Downing Street in 2022.
While never before endorsing Trump by name, she spoke at the
Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington in
February and wrote an op-ed for The Wall Street Journal calling
for a Republican president.
“I hope that a Republican will be returned to the White House in
2024,” she wrote in November. “There must be conservative
leadership in the U.S. that is once again bold enough to call
out hostile regimes as evil and a threat.”
Gonorrhoea cases reach record high in England
A record number of people in England were diagnosed with
gonorrhoea last year, annual UK Health Security Agency figures
show.
Diagnoses rose 7.5% - from 79,268 in 2022 to 85,223 in 2023.
Syphilis, meanwhile, rose 9.4% - from 8,693 to 9,513, the
highest number since 1948 - with more heterosexual men and women
becoming infected.
Both have more than doubled in the past decade.
Overall, sexually transmitted infection diagnoses, including
several different STIs, rose 4.7%.

Violence against women and girls at ‘epidemic’ levels, UK police
say
Violence against women and girls in England and Wales has
reached “epidemic levels,” UK police have warned
In a major report, police estimate that at least one in every 12
women will be a victim of violence against women and girls
(VAWG) every year, amounting to 2 million victims. Meanwhile, at
least one in every 20 adults will be a perpetrator of this
violence.
Crimes including rape, domestic abuse, stalking and harassment
increased by 37% in the past five years, the report found – a
“staggering” increase that has prompted the UK Home Office to
classify VAWG as “a national threat to public safety.”
Maggie Blyth, the NPCC’s lead for VAWG, said the situation had
become “a national emergency,” and that violence has reached
“epidemic levels … in terms of its scale, complexity and impact
on victims.”
There has been a 435% increase in child sexual abuse and
exploitation in England and Wales between 2013 and 2022, the
report said. Of these crimes, 93% involve contact sexual
offenses and sexual grooming.
The average age of victims in these cases is 13 years old, while
the average age of suspects is 15 years old, it said. More than
half of child sexual abuse and exploitation cases reported
between January and July 2023 were also committed by children.
The police report also acknowledged that, while crimes against
women and girls are increasing in number, perpetrators are often
not punished for their actions.
As of March 2023, only 4.4% of domestic abuse cases recorded by
police resulted in the perpetrator being convicted, the report
said.
The UK’s Minister for Safeguarding Jess Phillips wrote in a post
on social media that the report’s findings show that VAWG is a
“national emergency” and a “threat” to Britain’s security and
prosperity.

In the UK, a dangerous escalation in the criminalization of
climate protests
The climate crisis is felt across the world, through extreme
temperatures, floods, droughts, forest fires, and many other
negative impacts. It is worth noting that if the world was to
reach net zero in 2050 or 2060, which are the most common
country targets, the world would continue to warm until that
point. And as we are already experiencing climate crisis, the
prospect of another quarter century of warming is daunting.
National and international bodies dedicated to climate policy
are increasingly desperate, pointing out that countries are
nowhere near being on track to implement the policies that would
help them reach those net zero targets.
A lot of people around the world are therefore, quite rightly,
concerned and, quite rightly, lack confidence in governments to
avoid the civilizational threats that the IPCC reports warn us
about. It is this very rational and science-based desperation
that motivates people to become climate activists. None of this
type of reasoning is now permissible to take into account in UK
courts.
The criminalization of climate protesters is a severe threat
both to the climate and to our democratic systems. It is devised
to insulate the political forces that are too slow to act on
climate change from proper contestation.

UK net migration is down 80% from 2023, but why? | James O'Brien
James O'Brien unpacks the data on falling net migration,
the wider context behind young adults leaving the UK and why
some commentators in the UK media are framing these trends in
misleading ways.
Net migration - the difference between the number of people
arriving and leaving the UK - fell in the year to June 2025 to
204,000, the latest Office for National Statistics figures show.
Among the leading causes of the drop are the fewer non-EU
nationals arriving to work or study in the UK and the
"continued, gradual increase" of people leaving the
country.
’They call me a traitor’: Why a British businessman wants more
to move to Russia | LBC
Lewis Goodall speaks to British businessman Phillip
Hutchinson about a scheme he is championing to bring ‘anti-woke’
westerners to Russia.
The visa scheme, which came into effect in September of last
year, offers three-year temporary residence to citizens from 47
countries, including the UK.
Lewis Goodall questions Hutchinson on why he is so keen to
promote a country which is currently under a ‘murderous regime’
where ‘children have been stolen from a neighbouring state’.
Asked whether he is funded by the Russian government, Hutchinson
claims he hasn’t 'received a bob'.
Yet Lewis isn't convinced by the proposed plan, pressing the
businessman on whether gay people should be encouraged to live
in a country where they're 'not exactly friendly' and are at
risk of reviving abuse.
As the interview concludes, Lewis Goodall leaves us with his
parting thoughts on Phillip Hutchinson: 'With patriots like
that, who needs a country...’
