Social media dependency is linked to a reduced preference for
       freedom, study finds
       --- Quote ---
       > Social media dependency is associated with a reduced
preference for freedom, according to new research published in
Psychological Reports. The study suggests that people who are
heavily dependent on social media may use it as a way to escape
from the uncertainties and challenges of the real world.
       >
       > Social media dependency refers to a condition in which
individuals develop a strong reliance on social media platforms,
leading to excessive and compulsive use that negatively impacts
various aspects of their lives. It involves an intense need for
constant engagement with social media, difficulty in controlling
usage, and experiencing negative consequences due to excessive
       social media use.
       >
       > Previous studies had established connections between social
media use and anxiety, mediated by factors like intolerance of
uncertainty and experiential avoidance. Building upon this
knowledge, the authors behind the new study sought to examine
whether social media dependency influenced individuals’
preference for freedom and their tendency to avoid situations
       involving decision-making.
       >
       > “Our research has suggested that many people use social media
(and the web more generally) to calm themselves, increasingly
people seem to be more anxious about ‘things in general,’ and so
an escape from a situation over which they have little control
anyway seemed a coping strategy that was highly likely,” said
study author Phil Reed, a psychology professor at Swansea
University and author of “Interventions for Autism: Evidence for
       Educational and Clinical Practice.”
       >
       > “It also allowed us to unite a couple of areas in the field
that don’t often get talked about together – learning and
       psychoanalysis.”
       >
       > For their study, the researchers recruited 151 participants,
including a mix of female, male, and non-binary individuals,
with a mean age of 23.85 years. The majority of participants
identified their ethnicity as white. To assess the level of
daily social media use, the researchers obtained screenshots of
the participants’ time spent on social media over the previous
       week.
       >
       > Participants completed various questionnaires to measure
social media addiction, trait anxiety, intolerance of
uncertainty, and experiential avoidance. They also completed an
experimental task derived from instrumental conditioning
       literature.
       >
       > In the experimental task, participants were presented with two
colored squares on a screen. One square was associated with a
“forced” choice, and the other with a “free” choice. After
making their choice, participants received a reward. They
repeated this process for eight trials. By using this
experimental paradigm, the researchers aimed to investigate how
social media dependency and various aspects of anxiety related
to behavioral choices between “free” and “forced” options.
       >
       > The researchers found that participants with higher social
media dependency had higher levels of anxiety and intolerance of
       uncertainty.
       >
       > During the experimental task, the participants showed a
general preference in favor of the option that gave them more
freedom of choice. This finding supports previous research
conducted with pigeons. But participants who were heavily
dependent on social media did not show the same preference for
freedom. They were less likely to prefer freedom compared to
those with lower social media dependency. Additionally,
individuals with high social media dependency made decisions
more quickly, indicating a tendency towards impulsivity.
       >
       > “I think what people could take from this is just a reminder
to check in with themselves about why they are reaching for that
mobile,” Reed told PsyPost. “Is it just an unthinking impulsive
response, or do they really want to get online that way? Think
about your reasons, and the triggers that make you do something,
can be a start to getting them under control.”
       >
       > The findings suggest that social media dependency is
associated with reduced preference for freedom and increased
anxiety and intolerance of uncertainty. It is possible that
using social media serves as an escape from uncertain real-world
situations. The study also supports the idea that social media
dependency is related to impulsive behavior...

       > A woman is getting backlash from creators of color after
posting what’s been described as a “tone deaf” video about her
       childhood nanny.
       >
       > On May 11, Lexie Jayy (@lexie_jayy), a 29-year-old model and
content creator based in Los Angeles, California, posted a
controversial video on TikTok, in which she reveals that she’s
“moving” her childhood nanny back to the Philippines.
       > ...
       > “Taking her back to the Philippines is something I could not
have wanted to do more,” Lexie explains, while noting that Elena
was there for her during the most formative of experiences
       during her life.
       >
       > In what was likely an effort to post a heartwarming story
about Elena, some viewers took issue with certain aspects of
Lexie’s video. Questions inevitably arose, including why Lexie’s
family allegedly failed to pay for Elena to visit her loved ones
in the Philippines earlier than now or how, after three decades
in the country, she was unable to become an American citizen.
       > ...
       > While some commenters haven’t had a problem with Lexie’s video
about Elena, others, particularly people of color, are pointing
out how privileged it comes off to the general public.
       > ...
       > “What’s crazy is she exploited her again by making a tiktok
like that for her own benefit. Like she thought that video would
gain HER more followers,” @summerofrae replied.
       >
       > “The level of her lack of awareness and glaring privilege in
that video was concerning to say the least,”
@ashleybulletjournals wrote. “It was so sad.”
       >
       > “She is limping, her body is clearly broken down. They used
her for half her life and are discarding her now,”
       @burneraccountboi commented.
       > ...
       > Lexie then apologizes for coming off as insensitive.
       > ...
       > “I am deeply sorry for the ripple effect of her hurt that my
videos caused,” she says. “The spreading of false narratives on
the internet can be extremely hurtful and dangerous to all
       involved.”
       >
       > In just one day of posting, Lexie’s video has more than 600
comments, the majority of which seem to suggest Lexie is being
       disingenuous.
       > ...
       > “Her rich parents could’ve sponsored and moved her family out
here. Elena was robbed of her own motherhood,” @heyhayhay86
       commented on Stefannie’s video.
       >
       > “If someone was this important to me, I’d move heaven & hell
to get them documented and get their family here,” @noangel815
       also replied.
       >
       > “Its giving my parents attorney wrote this and I’m reading it
so I don’t get financially cut off but I still have no idea why
       ppl are upset,” @theindianajanes criticized.
       --- End Quote ---
The best thing Lexie can do is voluntarily refrain from
reproducing. She also looks like what we would expect:

Chronically online people become disconnected from common sense
and emotional normality that saying and hearing nasty comments
constantly doesn't effect them anymore. Calling someone a r-tard

Psychology: ‘Success Bombing’ Is the Awkward Friendship Issue
       That No One Talks About
       --- Quote ---
       > Success bombing is a symptom of our increasingly narcissistic
culture, and it’s having a negative impact on friendships.
       >
       > We’ve all got that one friend in our lives who constantly
blows up our WhatsApp chat with endless stories about their own
success (and, if you don’t, there’s every chance it’s you). From
long missives about the myriad chores they’ve ticked off over
the weekend, to – yes, really – a photograph of their salary
slip after an eye watering pay rise, it’s all the sort of stuff
you love to see happen for the people you love. Unless…
       >
       > Well, unless they never talk about anything else, that is. Or
ask you how you are. Or, y’know, give you a moment to talk about
all the exciting developments in your own life, maybe.
       >
       > We’re talking, of course, about success bombing. And it is, in
this age of social media, a thoroughly 2021 problem.
       >
       > What is Success Bombing?
       >
       > “Success bombing is the term coined for the need someone has
to show off about their success all the time,” explains writer
and mental health campaigner Neev Spencer.
       >
       > “It’s a constant, shameless need to get one up on the other
person and bomb them with a greater success than theirs. This
breeds a very unhealthy mindset. Mix in a dose of social media
which gives you an endless room to brag, and you’re left with a
very narcissistic culture. Celebrate life’s blessings by all
       means – but stay humble.”
       >
       > Why Do Some People Feel the Need to Bomb Others with Their
       Success?
       >
       > “Really successful people often don’t look for that outward
validation – they have that within the core of who they are and
that’s what drives them forward to be the best,” explains
       Spencer.
       >
       > “Being of Indian heritage, I have been a victim of success
bombing on a global stage from every single aunty in my
community, showing off their children’s achievements to my
parents: ‘Did you know my son got into Oxford University?’ ‘He
was top of his class at school you know.’ But, when people do
this, it’s usually an indication that they have deep rooted
insecurities and a need to constantly feel as if they are
climbing the ladder one step ahead of the rest.

likely consistently share on social media, looking for a
dopamine hit of appreciation which comes from likes, comments
and DMs, and there’s research to suggest that the hit we get
from those instant responses, is similar to that of sex, so it’s
no surprise we all get sucked into a vortex of wanting
       gratification sometimes.”
       >
       > Spencer cautions: “However, there is a real difference between
someone ‘showing off’ here and there, and success bombing on a
daily basis. These ‘bombs’ are often misjudged moments requiring
applause and come from a deep rooted issue they may have with
themselves and how they’re seen by the rest of the world.
       >
       > “As the singer Frank Ocean quotes, ‘Work hard in silence. Let
your success make the noise.’ Happy people don’t go through life
collecting recognition – they give it away.”...

In a society that promotes fakeness, selfishness and
competitiveness it makes sense that the people in would try to
one up each other in order to gain some prestige or for a ego
boost, unfortunately this leads to a very shallow, inauthentic,
