Thousands demonstrate in Canada for cease-fire in Gaza
OTTAWA, Canada: Thousands of protesters on Saturday carried
placards, waved Palestinian flags and chanted slogans before
Canada’s Parliament in Ottawa, demanding a permanent cease-fire
in the war between Israel and Hamas.
The diverse group included Palestinian, Arab, Muslim, Jewish,
anti-war, labor and social justice organizations.
The rally followed an online petition presented to lawmakers on
Friday with 286,719 signatures — said to be the most of any
parliamentary e-petition — urging Prime Minister Justin Trudeau
to press for a permanent cease-fire in Gaza.
“A pause is not enough,” said Yara Shoufani, a protest
organizer, adding that “thousands of Palestinians have been
killed and Gaza’s infrastructure has been destroyed.”
Protester Omar Yousif, 38, said he was taking part to “awaken
the world” to the plight of civilians in Gaza.

Braid: Gondek's shocking snub of Hanukkah turns a great party
into magnet for antisemitism
At the last minute, she said she wouldn’t attend this year’s
menorah lighting at city hall, accusing Jewish leaders of
tricking her about the “political” meaning of the celebration.
Will she now cancel Christmas, too? Stop attending Muslim
events? I don’t think so.
Gondek’s snub has inflicted shock and anguish on Calgary’s
Jewish community. It came out of nowhere after she had agreed to
attend and a lot of work had gone into the event.
The mayor says she didn’t know support would be expressed for
Israel. There was a “last-minute change” that “goes against the
original intention” because the event was “repositioned to
support Israel.”
That left her “feeling let down by (Jewish) leadership.”
Liberal MP Anthony Housefather, who is Jewish, said of Gondek:
“You are sending a horrible message by not attending.”
The local federal Conservative caucus said in a joint statement:
“Her decision to withdraw could dangerously normalize
antisemitism at a time when across campuses and communities,
Jewish Canadians are already feeling threatened.”

Amid Unprecedented Surge in Antisemitism, Toronto Public Library
Welcomes Radical Anti-Israel Author

B’nai Brith Canada is urging the Toronto Public Library (TPL) to
cancel its event, scheduled to feature a controversial American
whose writings wrongly accuse Israel of manipulating the
Holocaust to suppress criticism.
Norman Finkelstein, a former political science professor who has
been denied tenure in the past over his extreme writings, has
been invited to participate at the TPL’s Dec. 5 event – part of
an “Intellectual Freedom” program series about free speech in
academic settings.
The TPL has billed its conference as an opportunity to address
the problem of faculty being “hemmed in or censored” for
“unpopular or politically challenging” opinions and research.
According to promotional materials, the goal is to “encourage
universities to push boundaries and challenge the dominant
narratives while at the same [time] ensuring that universities
are safe spaces for everyone.”
accusing the global “Jewish Establishment” of weaponizing the
collective memory of the Shoah
Last month, Finkelstein wrote a blog post lauding Hamas’ brutal
Oct. 7 assault - as “heroic resistance.”
“The irony in the TPL’s decision to feature Finkelstein in their
speaker series is that his anti-Zionist worldview already
represents the ‘dominant narrative’ on university campuses,”
said Michael Mostyn, B’nai Brith Canada’s Chief Executive
Officer.
the TPL is contributing to the further marginalization of a
Jewish community already under siege, and that is absolutely
[s]un[/s]acceptable.”

Firebombed, Defaced with ‘Free Palestine’ Graffiti
A Jewish-owned grocery store in Toronto was firebombed and
defaced with “Free Palestine” graffiti early Wednesday morning.
“I’ve been a criminal investigator the vast majority of my
career, and in most of those criminal investigations, there was
a tipping point. This is this tipping point,” Toronto Police
Service spokeswoman Pauline Gray said outside the vandalized
International Delicatessen Foods building, which is located in a
predominantly Jewish neighborhood.
“We will leave no stone unturned. We will use all the resources
available to us to investigate, arrest and prosecute who is
responsible for this.”
Ya’ara Saks, the Liberal Party parliamentary representative for
the district, condemned the apparent hate crime in a public
note. “I have just learned the shocking news of the attack in
#YorkCentre at the Jewish-owned local business International
Delicatessen Foods. With each brazen act of incitement and of
violence, the cycle of antisemitism and hateful acts increases.
This must stop,” Saks, a minister in Justin Trudeau’s cabinet,
wrote Wednesday afternoon.
“We are all witness to the frequency of these acts of
intolerance targeting Jewish-owned businesses and Jewish
neighbourhoods.
The attack drew the condemnation of the Centre for Israel and
Jewish Affairs (CIJA), a prominent Canadian Jewish lobbying
group. “This is another sickening example of the escalation in
#Antisemitism we’re seeing in cities across #Canada. Political &
community leaders need to speak out loudly & decisively — this
violence cannot be tolerated any longer,” CIJA wrote in an
official statement on X.

Drop the charges against Indigo ‘Peace 11’ protesters
People peacefully protesting a Canadian business for openly
supporting the Israeli military as it commits egregious war
crimes should not be branded antisemites and treated like common
criminals.
On November 22, Canadian police conducted coordinated pre-dawn
raids on seven homes across the greater Toronto area and made 10
arrests. They broke doors, ordered suspects out of their beds,
and went on to completely ransack every single room and
confiscate computers, cars and other private property, in some
cases in the presence of terrified children and the elderly.
The suspects, known to their supporters collectively as “the
Peace 11” – including one that was arrested separately on
November 14, were professors, community organisers, legal
workers and labour activists, targeted for the ostensibly
dangerous offences of plastering posters and splattering
washable red paint on the window of a Toronto branch of the
Indigo book store chain.
They had taken action against the store, like hundreds of
others across Canada, to protest the material support Indigo’s
owners have long been providing to the Israeli military.
And these early morning raids, during which peaceful protesters
were treated as violent criminals and humiliated in front of
their family members, are not even the most troubling aspect of
this intimidation campaign.
The media coverage of the protest action and its aftermath, the
nature of the charges, and the police messaging on the case,
raise serious questions about abuse of police powers and
systemic anti-Palestinian discrimination in Canada.
It seems the raids were designed to terrorise, and scare into
silence, Canadians who have been taking to the streets in large
numbers in Toronto over the past few weeks to call for an end to
Israel’s war on Gaza.

Pro-Palestinian march in neighbourhood group says is
historically Jewish sparks criticism
"Hebrew Heights." That's how Dan Brotman, executive director of
the Windsor Jewish Federation, describes Victoria Boulevard — a
residential neighbourhood in South Windsor.
The federation has issued a public statement expressing fears
and concerns about a pro-Palestinian demonstration that included
Victoria Boulevard in its marching route on Dec. 31.
Organizers say they weren't aware they were marching in a Jewish
neighbourhood. But Brotman believes it was a form of deliberate
intimidation.
"I can say that many members of our Jewish community felt unsafe
and felt targeted, because that area has historically been known
as a Jewish area. It is symbolic of Jewish Windsor," Brotman
told CBC Windsor.
Brotman said there are 40 to 50 Jewish homeowners in the area of
Victoria Boulevard.
There's no evidence, he said, that the route was planned for
that reason.
"We can't prove it. But what we can say is that this is a
strategy being used by the pro-Palestinian movement in other
parts of North America, including in Toronto."
He says he doesn't believe that organizers did not know the area
was home to a number of Jewish homeowners.
"Anybody who is from this area usually knows it," Cheifetz said.
"I can't argue with what they say, but I don't believe it."
But Rasha Zaid, an organizer with Windsor4Palestine, bristled at
the WJF statement, describing it as "inaccurate" and
"insensitive."
"We are not a mob," Zaid told CBC Windsor. "We are protesters
that speak the voice of humanity. We want nothing but peace on
every land existing."
"It's not just me," Zaid said. "Many members that actually live
and grew up in Windsor had no idea (that area is Jewish)."
"We do not want to see the Israeli-Palestinian conflict imported
to Windsor-Essex," Brotman said.

Anti-Israel protesters strike Joly's home; three arrested for
defying Toronto bridge protest ban
Anti-Israel protesters once again attempted to occupy the Avenue
Road overpass in Toronto on Saturday
Toronto Police Chief Myron Demkiw announced last week that
demonstrations would no longer be permitted on the bridge, and
that future protesters would face arrest.
Despite that warning, protesters began arriving at the overpass
— located amid Toronto’s largest Jewish neighbourhoods —
Saturday morning, where police were waiting.
The Avenue Road bridge is located in Canada’s largest and most
diverse Jewish communities, within a kilometre of nine
synagogues and several Jewish businesses, homes, schools,
daycares and community centres. Protesters and their advocates
insist the demonstrations are meant to inform rather than
intimidate.
Protesters on the bridge were seen carrying signs depicting
Adolf Hitler and related Nazi imagery.
Jewish residents have said they felt intimidated and harassed by
the protests.
Anti-Israel activists soon began picketing outside of
Jewish-owned businesses and community centres, and targeting
politicians they perceive as being pro-Israel.
Protesters set up a noisy demonstration outside of the Montreal
home of Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly on Saturday
morning, a day after she issued a government statement that
rejected the claims by South Africa at a UN court accusing
Israel of “genocide.”
About three-dozen protesters appeared at Joly’s home, setting up
a tent as well as a loud speaker, and accused her of complicity
with the [s]alleged [/s]“genocide.”
Anti-Israel demonstrators were expected to disrupt a number of
events on Sunday.
A Toronto anti-Israel group planned to sabotage a Sunday
afternoon family ice skate at Mel Lastman Square, hosted by
Toronto City Councillor Lily Cheng, Liberal MP Ali Ehsassi and
Ontario PC MPP Stan Cho.
Anti-Israel protesters were also expected to disrupt a vigil
marking the 100th day of Israeli hostages being held captive by
Hamas, scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. Sunday at Nathan Phillips
Square in downtown Toronto.
Two anti-Israel groups were also planning a 4 p.m. rally at the
Israeli consulate at Bloor and Yonge streets.
In addition, starting at 7:30 p.m., a rally of community leaders
and politicians in support of Israel will take place at
Toronto’s Congregation Habonim to mark the hostages’ 100 days of
captivity, near Bathurst Street and Glencairn Avenue.
