Syria, Iran leaders sign long-term agreements
The presidents of Iran and Syria on Wednesday signed a
series of long-term cooperation agreements on oil and other
sectors to bolster economic ties between the two allies.
Iran's Ebrahim Raisi, leading a large economic and political
delegation, met with his Syrian counterpart, Bashar Assad, after
landing in the war-torn country for a two-day visit — an Iranian
president's first visit to Damascus since 2010.
Syrian state media said Raisi and Assad signed agreements and
memorandums of understanding related to several sectors,
including oil, agriculture, railways and free trade zones.
Iran's state-owned railway company has long aspired to expand
its network through neighbouring Iraq and Syria, linking it to
the Syrian port of Lattakia on the Mediterranean Sea to boost
trade.
Syria's opposition and Tehran critics see this as another Iran
attempt at growing its political influence.
The deal is important also for Syria, whose economy has hit an
all-time low over the past decade, with spiraling inflation, a
currency plunge and rampant power cuts.
The last Iranian president to visit Syria was President Mahmoud
Ahmadinejad in 2010.
The Iran-Saudi reconciliation is likely to have positive effects
on countries where the two fought proxy wars, including
Syria.
Syria Tensions | US Cries Dogfight, Russia Hits Back With
Violation of Protocol, IS Training Charge
Russian forces in Syria have accused US military pilots
of “gross violations” of “deconfliction protocols” meant to
prevent any clashes. According to Russia, American pilots were
activating weapons systems while approaching Russian jets in the
east of Syria. This comes just a day after Russia alleged that
the US was preparing terrorist attacks in crowded places in
Syria. Moscow also alleges that Washington is training numerous
ISIS fighters at the Al-Tanf military base in Syria. The
accusations by the Russian forces come amid escalating tensions
between the two superpowers over Ukraine.

When we talk about fronts, we mean ground invasions. Air attacks
alone generally do not alter possession of territory.

Assad arrest warrant 'historic': French court's indictment of
foreign head-of-state 'unprecedented'
French judicial authorities issued international arrest
warrants for Syrian President Bashar Assad, his brother and two
army generals for alleged complicity in war crimes and crimes
against humanity. In what is being described as a 'historic
first', FRANCE 24's Nadia Massih is joined by Steve Kostas,
Senior Legal Officer with the Open Society Justice Initiative's
litigation team. Mr. Kostas asserts that the French court's
"unprecedented" step is historic in a number of ways. "It's the
first criminal case to address the chemical weapons attacks
committed by the Syrian government. It's the first time in the
history of international law and international justice that a
foreign-sitting head of state has been charged by a national
court for international crimes. And it's the first time that
victims testified about what happened to them in a court to
investigating judges." He describes this as a potential
"watershed moment in justice for international crimes" which
could very well "call into question" the absolute immunity of
foreign sitting heads of state. Most importantly, he says these
are "welcome developments" for the victims and the
survivors."
