Can desalination quench the world's thirst?
If current estimates are correct, then about 3.4 billion
people will live in the Middle East and Africa (MEA) by 2050.
And this will be more than in the same year, the number of
people that will live in China and India combined. The
ever-increasing number of people is putting serious pressure on
governments, who are responsible for providing basic public
goods such as electricity and water. Moreover, the issue of
access to fresh water is particularly acute, and all this
against the backdrop of global warming and increasing droughts
around the world. The situation could be corrected by
desalination, but it has not yet received mass development. Why
is this so? What hinders the spread of technology and what are
the pitfalls? And most importantly, will desalination be able to
quench the impending global thirst? #desalination #ecology

Groundwater Disappearing Faster Than Predicted
Eight U.S. states are nearing a tipping point as
groundwater levels fall at alarming rates, threatening
agriculture, drinking supplies, and long-term habitability.
Driven by extreme drought, overuse, and aging infrastructure,
these regions face a mounting crisis that scientists say may be
irreversible. Urgent policy shifts are underway, but time is
running out to avoid permanent damage. #GroundwaterCrisis

The Colorado River Basin’s groundwater is disappearing faster
than the river itself
The Colorado River Basin lost an alarming amount of
groundwater over the past 20 years, a new study found. Nearly 28
million acre-feet of water has been depleted from the region,
nearly the volume of a full Lake Mead, the country’s largest
reservoir.
It’s twice the amount that was lost from the river’s reserves in
the same period and the loss is accelerating, the report said.
There was a three-fold increase in the rate of depletion over
the past decade when compared to the rate of the previous 14
studied.

India has 18% of the world's population, but only 4% of
its water resources, making it among the most water-stressed
countries in the world.
We can calculate from the above information the minimum number
of Indians who should emigrate.
A lesser, but significant concern apart from water, is
energy use.
According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), India's
electricity consumption for data centres is expected to double
from 0.5-1% of the country's total power demand to around
1-2%.
Enough emigration would also be able offset this increase by
reducing municipal power demand.
