couldn't have been opened.

matter how things developed in Danzig, he was determined to go
to war against Poland in any case. The same day he received
Burckhardt, he ordered the anti-Polish campaign to be ratcheted
up to ‘80 per cent volume’, causing Goebbels to note, correctly:

mistakes’.“ In the days that followed, German propaganda stepped
up its attacks on the British leadership. The hardest shots were
reserved for Churchill. “We will not let him get away,’ wrote
Goebbels. “We will not rest until he has been swept aside.’*

army’ with its ‘badly trained and equipped’ soldiers was worth.
The end result, in Goebbels’ summary of the two-hour speech,
would be ‘the greater, all-encompassing German people’s Reich’,
which would completely revise the balance of power in Europe
established after the Peace of Westphalia of 1648. The Fiihrer
announced that it would also ‘incorporate’ Belgium and
Switzerland.”

of the German troops were supposed to be stationed.
Nevertheless, the plan to let millions of people starve to death
or die in other ways in the occupied Soviet territories became
the guiding principle for many decision-makers. The ominous
figure of 30 million - by which the population was to be reduced
according to Backe's ideas - often played a role
