Turkey-Greece conflict in eastern Mediterranean
DIR By: guest5
Date: August 20, 2020, 12:45 am
---------------------------------------------------------
This article does not mention how Greece is treating Muslim
refugees from the Middle-East so badly and that this is also a
point of contention with Turkey. Greece's friendliness toward
Israel is probably another....
Turkey-Greece conflict in eastern Mediterranean is less about
gas than vaccuum left by Trump
--- Quote ---
> The worsening stand-off in the eastern Mediterranean,
frequently described as a gas conflict, has been gaining
momentum. It may seem a strange time to be fighting over gas
when prices remain in a slump due to weak demand and investors
withdrawing.
>
--- End Quote ---
--- Quote ---
> Emmanuel Macron’s visit to Beirut was by no means as
accidental as the explosion that devastated the Lebanese
capital. He and the UAE pledged to co-fund harbour repairs,
pre-empting Turkey’s own bid. France now has military agreements
with the UAE, Greece, Cyprus and Egypt, all geared towards
curbing the actions of a fellow NATO member and EU candidate.
>
> And while Berlin is left trying to reach a balance in the
Greece-Turkey confrontation, Washington, traditionally the
guarantor of peace between the Aegean NATO rivals, has been
almost totally silent. There is a sense that all parties want to
take advantage of this, onshore and offshore, before the US
elections. It is oddly this vacuum, rather than fossil fuels,
that is fanning regional rivalries. With the US withdrawn,
Moscow continuing its opaque brinkmanship and the EU split over
Turkey, the scene is unfortunately set for more instability to
come.

NATO allies are facing off in the Eastern Mediterranean. The
conflict could entangle the entire region
--- Quote ---
> Tension is simmering in the waters of the Eastern
Mediterranean as Greece and Turkey, NATO allies but historic
rivals, inch toward a possible military confrontation that could
end up engulfing the region.
> Naval vessels from both countries made a show of force in the
contested region of the Eastern Mediterranean this week as a
race for gas and oil reserves adds a new point of friction to
old disputes.
> Hostilities first flared when Ankara announced that it is
extending the duration of a seismic exploration mission in the
disputed waters originally expected to end on Monday in a
maritime navigational note using the global NAVTEX system. The
Oruc Reis survey vessel is accompanied by naval ships and the
Turkish defense ministry announced maritime exercises in the
area on Tuesday.
> Greece considers the Turkish gas exploration illegal. Athens
responded to Ankara by issuing a counter NAVTEX message and
announcing naval exercises in the same location to the south of
Turkey and the Greek island of Kastellorizo, which lies just
over one mile from the Turkish coast.
>
> On Wednesday, Turkey confirmed that its navy warships were
conducting "maritime trainings" with a US vessel in the Eastern
Mediterranean.
> They're not the only ones: France and Italy are joining Greece
and Cyprus for joint naval exercises, French and Italian
officials said, a move likely to raise the temperature further
in the region.

EU warns Turkey of sanctions as east Mediterranean crisis
worsens
--- Quote ---
> Top EU diplomat says preparing sanctions against Turkey over
territorial dispute with Greece in Eastern Mediterranean.
--- End Quote ---
--- Quote ---
> The European Union has threatened Turkey with fresh sanctions
- including tough economic measures - unless progress is made in
reducing soaring tensions with Greece and Cyprus in the Eastern
Mediterranean.
>
> The EU's top diplomat Josep Borrell on Friday said the bloc
wanted to give "a serious chance to dialogue" but was steadfast
in its support for member states Greece and Cyprus in the
crisis, which has raised fears of a military standoff.
>
> A dispute over maritime borders and gas drilling rights near
the island of Cyprus has reignited the long-running rivalry
between Athens and Ankara, with the two neighbours staging rival
naval drills.
>
> The EU's measures, meant to limit Turkey's ability to explore
for natural gas in contested waters, could include individuals,
ships or the use of European ports, Borrell said.
>
> "We can go to measures related to sectoral activities ...
where the Turkish economy is related to the European economy,"
Borrell told a news conference, referring to possible sanctions.
>
> The EU would focus on everything related to "activities we
consider illegal", he said.
>
> Borrell was speaking after EU foreign ministers met in Berlin
to discuss support for Greece after it ratified a maritime
accord with Egypt to counter Turkey's claims to energy resources
in the region.

Tensions escalate between Greece and Turkey in eastern
Mediterranean
--- Quote ---
> After weeks of tensions in the Mediterranean Sea, Greece and
Turkey have stepped up rival military manoeuvres in recent days.
The two countries are at odds over maritime borders, but also -
and above all - the search for undersea oil and gas. Concerned
by the risk of further escalation, the European Union is calling
for dialogue between Athens and Ankara. We take a closer look.

Turkey blasts 'arrogant' Macron amid Eastern Med crisis talks
--- Quote ---
> A group of European Union nations says they are ready to
impose sanctions on Turkey over its drilling ambitions in the
Mediterranean. At a summit of seven nations on the sea hosted by
French President Emmanuel Macron, he said there was a
willingness to re-engage with Turkey. Tensions have been rising
since the discovery of large reserves of oil and gas in the
Eastern Mediterranean.

Greece Vs Turkey| Athens Warns NATO, UN After Erdogan's Invasion
Threat As Europe Focuses On Ukraine
--- Quote ---
> Athens has sounded the alarm over Turkish President Recep
Tayyip Erdogan’s recent threat to invade Greece. Greece has
written to NATO, EU and the UN, asking them to condemn the
Turkish President’s comment. In the letter, Greece has said that
current bilateral tensions could escalate into a second open
conflict on European soil. Greece’s response comes after Turkish
President Recep Erdogan recently reiterated a thinly veiled
invasion threat. Ankara has accused Athens of violating
international agreements by militarising islands close to
Turkey's Aegean coastline. Turkey and Greece have decades-old
disputes over an array of issues, including territorial claims
in the Aegean Sea.
