Just when the local people in HK thought they have overcome the
fourth wave of virus hike when the number of cases dropped to
single digit at the beginning of the week, a sudden burst of new
cases was reported few days ago - all connected to one fitness
centre frequented by mostly westerners. Apparently, nobody was
wearing masks inside the gym and group distancing was not
       observed. Typical!

Anti-lockdown protests erupt across Europe as tempers fray over
       tightening restrictions
       --- Quote ---
       > Demonstrators took to the streets in several European cities
on Saturday to protest Covid-19 lockdown restrictions, with
clashes between demonstrators and police erupting in the German
city of Kassel while in London, police arrested dozens of people
for breaching pandemic restrictions. Protests also erupted in
Austria, Belgium, Britain, Croatia, Finland, Poland, Romania,
Sweden and Switzerland as European authorities confront a third
       coronavirus wave.

"FREE"DUMB!!! Shouts the average Westerner at their
anti-lockdown protest. Given it some thought and 90sRF is
correct in stating: had everyone just locked down for a month or
two the virus would have died off by itself because it wouldn't
have been able to find any new hosts and a vaccine would never
have been needed. The reason we are still in the pandemic a year
on is because no one really locked down, at least not in the
       west....
None of these protestors ever seem to consider the lives of the
medical personnel that are going to have to treat them if, and
       when, they get sick.
Protesters across Europe clash with police over COVID curbs
       --- Quote ---
       > Countries across Europe are returning to lockdown, as the
continent grapples with a surge in coronavirus infections. In
Germany, police used water cannon and pepper spray to disperse
anti-lockdown protesters in the city of Kassel. In neighbouring
Switzerland, more than 5,000 protesters gathered in the town of
Liestal to demand an end to COVID restrictions which have shut
restaurants and other public places for months.
       > Elsewhere in Europe, there were more anti-lockdown protests on
Saturday from Bulgaria to Romania, Serbia to Croatia.

COVID-19: Germany to impose strict lockdown over Easter
       --- Quote ---
       > Germany is extending the current lockdown through to April 18,
Chancellor Angela Merkel announced on Tuesday. The country will
enter an even stricter lockdown from April 1 to April 5, over
the Easter holiday period when shops, including grocery stores,
will largely have to close. Merkel warned that Germany needed to
"break the exponential growth of the third wave." Case numbers
have reached levels that authorities say will overburden
       intensive care units.
       >
       > Tuesday's announcement marks a reversal from earlier this
month when state leaders agreed to begin a cautious reopening
       process.
       >
       > Talks between leaders of Germany's 16 federal states and
Merkel lasted until the early hours of the morning following a
       lengthy interruption.
       >
       > What are the new measures?
       > As well as prolonging existing measures such as the closure of
cultural, leisure and sporting facilities, tougher restrictions
will apply over the Easter period.
       >
       > - Churches will be asked to hold services marking the
       Christian festival online.
       > - No more than five adults from two households will be able to
       meet over the five-day period.
       > - Testing and vaccination centers can remain open.
       > - Public gatherings will be prohibited.
       > - Almost all shops will be shut during the five days. Only
grocery stores may open on Saturday, April 3.
       > - Anyone from Germany holidaying abroad will have to be tested
before boarding a flight back to Germany.
       > - The "emergency brake" will halt further reopenings and will
apply to areas exceeding 100 new cases per 100,000 inhabitants
       over a seven-day period.
       >
       > If an area has an incidence rate of over 100 for three
consecutive days, harsher lockdown measures will once again
       apply.

       > New research suggests that the U.S. could have kept COVID-19
deaths around 292,000—well below the 547,000+ deaths the U.S.
has reached as of March 26, 2021—had there been unified adoption
of mask-wearing, physical distancing, and testing guidelines by
May 2020. In research released at a Brookings Institution
conference, economics Prof. Andrew Atkeson of the University of
California, Los Angeles projects that a total of about 672,000
people will die in the U.S. as a result of COVID-19. If that
projection is correct, then a unified response under former
Pres. Donald Trump could have saved about 380,000 lives.

At least the US is no longer the worst:
  HTML https://www.yahoo.com/news/daily-deaths-near-4-000-131551809.html
       --- Quote ---
       > RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Brazil currently accounts for
one-quarter of the entire world’s daily COVID-19 deaths, far
more than any other single nation, and health experts are
warning that the nation is on the verge of even greater
       calamity.
       >
       > The nation’s seven-day average of 2,400 deaths stands to reach
to 3,000 within weeks, six experts told the Associated Press.
That’s nearly the worst level seen by the U.S., though Brazil
has two-thirds its population. Spikes of daily deaths could soon
hit 4,000; on Friday there were 3,650.
       >
       > Having glimpsed the abyss, there is growing recognition
shutdowns are no longer avoidable -- not just among experts, but
also many mayors and governors. Restrictions on activity they
implemented last year were half-hearted and consistently
sabotaged by President Jair Bolsonaro, who sought to stave off
economic doom. He remains unconvinced of any need for clampdown,
which leaves local leaders pursuing a patchwork of measures to
prevent the death toll from spiraling further.
       >
       > It may be too late, with a more contagious variant rampaging
across Brazil. For the first time, new daily cases topped
100,000 on March 25, with many more uncounted. Miguel Nicolelis,
professor of Neurobiology at Duke University who advised several
Brazilian governors and mayors on pandemic control, anticipates
the total death toll reaching 500,000 by July and exceeding that
       of the U.S. by year-end.
       >
       > “We have surpassed levels never imagined for a country with a
public health care system, a history of efficient immunization
campaigns and health workers who are second to none in the
world,” Nicolelis said. “The next stage is the health system
       collapse.”
       >
       > The system is already buckling, with almost all states’
intensive care units near or at capacity. Dr. José Antônio
Curiati, a supervisor at Sao Paulo's Hospital das Clinicas, the
biggest hospital complex in Latin America, said its beds are
full, but patients keep arriving. The city's oxygen supply isn't
guaranteed, and stocks of sedatives required for intubation in
intensive care units will soon run out.
       --- End Quote ---
The US got Trump out of power and saw immediate improvement.
Brazil has to get Bolsonaro out of power before it can improve
       its situation.
