Nicaragua's Ortega defends Russia's stance over Ukraine

Nicaragua's Ortega defends Russia's stance over Ukraine
MANAGUA, Feb 21 (Reuters) - Nicaraguan President Daniel
Ortega became one of the first world leaders to back Russia's
stance over Ukraine on Monday, saying President Vladimir Putin
was right to recognise two regions controlled by Moscow-backed
separatists as independent.
The former Marxist guerrilla, who has led Nicaragua since 2007
after having first come to power in 1979, defended Putin's move
to recognize the independence of Donetsk and Luhansk during a
speech in Managua. read more
"I am sure that if they do a referendum like the one carried out
in Crimea, people will vote to annex the territories to Russia,"
said Ortega, a long-time opponent of U.S. influence in Central
America.
Ortega also said Ukraine's attempt to join the North Atlantic
Treaty Organization (NATO) represented a threat to Russia.
“If Ukraine gets into NATO they will be saying to Russia let's
go to war, and that explains why Russia is acting like this.
Russia is simply defending itself."
Central America does not automatically equate to Putin being
correct also.

Zelenskiy Remains in Kyiv Amid Russian Attacks: 'All of Us Are
Here'
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Friday said he
remained in Kyiv, even as Russia pounded the capital and other
cities with airstrikes for a second day.
Russian troops bore down on Ukraine’s capital Friday, with
gunfire and explosions resonating ever closer to the government
quarter, in an invasion of a democratic country that has fueled
fears of wider war in Europe and triggered worldwide efforts to
make Russia stop.
With reports of hundreds of casualties - including shelling that
sliced through a Kyiv apartment building and pummeled bridges
and schools - there also were growing signs that Vladimir
Putin’s Russia may be seeking to overthrow Ukraine’s government.
It would be his boldest effort yet to redraw the world map and
revive Moscow’s Cold War-era influence.
In the fog of war, it was unclear how much of Ukraine remains
under Ukrainian control and how much or little Russian forces
have seized.
The Kremlin accepted Kyiv's offer to hold talks, but it appeared
to be an effort to squeeze concessions out of Ukraine's
embattled president instead of a gesture toward a diplomatic
solution.
Zelenskiy Urges Russia to Hold Talks to End Fighting in Ukraine
The prospect of talks between Russia and Ukraine was cast
into doubt as the Kremlin said Kyiv had stopped responding after
rejecting Moscow’s initial offer of a meeting in Minsk, the
capital of Belarus.
Ukraine wanted a meeting instead in the Polish capital, Warsaw,
the Kremlin said, adding it had heard nothing further. There was
no immediate word from Ukraine on the Russian comments.
The diplomatic to and fro comes as fighting continues on the
ground with Russian forces moving toward the capital.
Any talks would likely struggle to find common ground on the
question of “neutrality” for Ukraine, which has sought to join
NATO and draw closer to Europe. Russia has also accused Kyiv of
wanting to forcibly retake two breakaway areas in Ukraine’s
east, something the government has repeatedly denied.
Ukraine war: Kyiv braces for battle as Russian tanks enter city
Ukrainian soldiers have started taking up positions

The Russian forces who have reportedly entered the city are
believed to be centred around the northern district of Obolon, a
heavily residential area just 9km north of Kyiv's parliament and

HTML https://finance.yahoo.com/news/why-putin-didn-t-flinch-164653122.html
Why Putin didn’t flinch in the face of an onslaught of
financial sanctions
Sanctions against Russia may not achieve their aim of forcing
Vladimir Putin back to the negotiating table if his forces
succeed in achieving their military objective before the country
feels the economic pain.
Russia may be enfeebled by years of dependence on commodity
exports, yet the Kremlin has fattened itself on the proceeds of
last year’s inflationary boom in energy prices. That means it’s
now in a prime position to weather reprisals designed to sap his
fiscal ability to wage war.
...
Russia continued last year to decouple itself financially from
the global reserve currency system by accumulating more gold in
its central bank vaults than it holds in U.S. dollars. According
to the World Gold Council, stores of nearly 2,300 metric tons at
the end of November are the fifth largest in the world after the
U.S., Germany, Italy, and France.
Moreover, what are sanctions compared to the long-term economic
gain from acquiring Ukrainian resources?
HTML https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mHJO8IAHydo
Putin surely calculated all of this in detail prior to his
invasion, which is why NATO merely proceeding along the
pre-calculated path could never faze Putin. The only way to stop
Putin is to do something genuinely outside his wildest
expectations. Of course, this would require courage.
Vitaly Skakun is hailed as a hero after sacrificing his
life to blow up the Henichesky Bridge.
The bridge was mined but a Russian column was advancing and
there was no time to detonate it remotely.
Skakun radioed his unit and told them he would do it manually,
saying goodbye.

What do you think Dazhbog? Is this the hallmark of truly
anti-Russian Ukranian nationalist warrior? Or merely a
crypto-identitarian who "opposes" Russia only insofar as they
are not "pro-White" enough? I think a person from the latter
category would simply not have it in them to risk their life in
order to destroy the enemy, as all it would take for them to
become pro-Russian is for them to (correctly) recognize that
Russia is indeed "white" (thereby also proving that they are not
nationalists, as their alleigance was to "Whiteness", not
Ukraine).
This person I believe belongs to the former category, which
gives me hope that there are indeed true anti-Turanists in
Ukraine.
