Biden: Moscow has moved "more troops" toward the Ukrainian
border | DW News
US President Joe Biden said Thursday that there is a
"very high" risk Russia will invade Ukraine in the coming days.
"We have reason to believe that they are engaged in a false flag
operation as an excuse to go in," the US leader said.
Biden's comments come amid reports that Ukrainian forces and
pro-Moscow separatists exchanged fire in the east of the
country.
At NATO headquarters in Brussels, US Defense Secretary Lloyd
Austin said that Russia was flying in more combat and support
aircraft.
Amid the heightened tensions, the United Nations Security
Council convened Thursday for a meeting on Ukraine.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who changed travel plans
at the last minute to speak at the meeting, said that US
intelligence shows Russian forces are preparing to attack
Ukraine in the "coming days."
Blinken said the potential invasion is a "moment of peril" for
millions of people. He said Russia's targets in Ukraine include
the capital, Kyiv.
He also warned that Russia would attempt disinformation
campaigns through state media to spread "false alarms" and carry
out a "fake or real" attack to claim a pretext for invasion.
"Russia may describe this event as ethnic cleansing or a
genocide," he said.
Why would Putin be afraid of democracy when even the past U.S.
narrative has been that Putin has rigged elections? Who is
afraid of something they can easily manipulate if they want to,

The correct response now would be for NATO to send troops into
Crimea (or even other territories currently controlled by
Russia). Otherwise makes it all about who controls the new
disputed territories, with Russia only with territory to gain
but no territory to lose, placing it into an advantageous
position from the outset.
If someone starts punching you on the street and your "fighting
back" consists only of blocking, you are not really fighting
back. You are only seriously fighting back when you successfully
make the aggressor feel that they could lose more than they
stand to gain.

If sanctions worked, Russia would have given back Crimea by now:
HTML https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Annexation_of_Crimea_by_the_Russian_Federation#Sanctions
In response to the sanctions introduced by the US and EU,
the Russian Duma unanimously passed a resolution asking for all
members of the Duma to be included on the sanctions list.[408]
Head of the Just Russia party Sergei Mironov said he was proud
of being included on the sanctions list: "It is with pride that
I have found myself on the black list, this means they have
noticed my stance on Crimea."[409] Russian companies started
pulling billions of dollars out of Western banks to avoid any
asset freeze.[410]
It hasn't, because they don't. Russia is not afraid of
sanctions, period. The sooner we accept this, the sooner the
discussion can proceed to what measures (e.g. WMDs) are required
to actually stop Russia. The longer NATO keeps talking about
sanctions, the more I get the feeling that no one actually wants
to stop Russia. Sanctions are nothing but performative gestures
by NATO to set itself up to eventually say, "See? We tried!" and
then absolve itself of having to do anything serious until next
time. And when next time comes, NATO responds with..... more
sanctions! Repeat as many times as necessary until Duginism
wins?

warns of wider damage.
China on Wednesday criticized the expansion of economic
sanctions against Russia, saying that they were unlikely to

average people as well as the interests of Beijing.

sanctions have never been a fundamental and effective way to
solve problems, and China always opposes any illegal unilateral
sanctions,” Hua Chunying, a spokeswoman for China’s foreign

Explosions in Kyiv heard live on CNN as Putin declares military
operation
A CNN correspondent in Kyiv reported explosions live on
camera early Thursday morning local time, moments after Russian
President Vladimir Putin declared he would conduct a "special
military operation" in Ukraine.
Why it matters: U.S. officials have warned that Russia could
attempt an assault on Kyiv in effort to topple the Ukrainian
government. Explosions in other major cities across Ukraine were
also reported moments after Putin's remarks concluded.
What they're saying: "This is the first time we've heard
anything. It's been absolutely silent in this city throughout
the course of tonight and for the past several weeks we've not
seen anything at all," CNN reporter Matthew Chance said after
the explosions.
