Not long ago, an American president called NATO “obsolete” and
French President Emmanuel Macron declared it “brain dead.” Yet
never since the end of the Cold War has the West been more
united than it is now. Even some formerly neutral countries are
considering joining NATO. It has undoubtedly been a stroke of
luck that someone like Joe Biden, who embodies the spirit of
cooperation with Europe like no other, is currently the
       president of the United States.

partnership has a more reliable and solid
foundation. However, Europeans should not get their hopes up:
the new Russian threat makes Europe see again in dramatic
fashion how dependent it is on US security guarantees. Reducing
this dependence will continue to be a formidable challenge for
Europe in the years to come. Because even if the United States
were to reassert itself in the Western Alliance, Europe should
not forget the bitter lessons of the Donald Trump years and
aspire to a greater degree of strategic autonomy.

The war in Eastern Europe cannot hide the fact that the conflict
for hegemony in the future world order between the United States
and China will continue to be the focus of US foreign policy.
For some time now we have been seeing the erosion of the rules
and norms of international politics and a return to geopolitics
and classical power politics, be it in the Indo-Pacific, the
Middle East, the African continent or Eastern Europe. . Putin's
war against Ukraine is probably the most serious attack on the
liberal, rules-based world order recorded to date. It is evident
that we are in a transition phase towards a new global power
       structure.
