I think Glenway could actually lose business because of this, I
certainly won't be using them again, and from the comments, I'm
not the only one.

Aside from this discussion re Glenway, Certain other suppliers
now do not seem to honour loyalty and open new accounts within
the same area that we trade. . I have had this done to me three
times now by the same company, I challenged them but it falls on
deaf ears and puny excuses. This particular firm has had my
business, The bulk of it on and off for many years, One excuse
they gave me was, Well your spend has dropped off of late, I
explained, You have lost many orders from me due to not having
stock, Even as early into the year as January, So what do i do,
Turn the order away.. I lost a £3k order last year to a new
start up who were part of the club they took from me. An unfair
advantage but anyway, Now, This supplier accepted the
competition, Picked up the £3k order but lost it from me so
since that incident i have done very little business with said
supplier, I have many many good trophy customers, Some of which
have been with me for 20 years . They will not go anywhere else
and i know the new starter has tried some of them to no availe.
As it happens, I have had a very good year and picked up more
than enough work to cover the lost order, Now said supplier
could have benefited from this, BUT, Loyalty has to be a two way
thing. Seasons greetings one and all.

Interesting - I must be missing something....where are they
dictating the engraving prices please?
They really are biting off the hand that feeds them!

Yes they have all been at this back door sales lark for years
but this particular time it is BLATANT.
So you either roll over or roll your sleeves up.
I am in favour of a warning shot across the bows with a one
month ban, just to start with.
Okay Christmas is coming and it's so much easier to just do
nothing. In a few years you will be retired or bankrupt so why
bother.
Well you bother because you will always have challenges in
business, if life was easy they would all be doing it.
Rise to the challenges or become part of the statistics, that is
what being in business is all about.
This is one of your challenges during. This is your time in
business, deal with it. Don't look back in a few years and see
that you were just not up to it.
It's not a real hardship to take some action, it is only a
hardship if you don't.
A one month ban is a small contribution from each business and
together we might achieve something.

We have read the contributions to this topic and feel it is
worthwhile to explain our own position moving forward into 2018
and beyond. Clearly there is much concern, worry etc over
recent developments within the industry as expressed in the
majority of the posts in this topic. In particular we will
address the points regarding wholesalers going direct via trade
counters etc.
Firstly, Trendsetting Awards are wholesalers. We have no
ambition to be anything other than a wholesaler and have no
intention on developing a B2C e-commerce platform. We respect
and appreciate the value added by our customers in between goods
leaving us to finding themselves with the end consumer. The
personal service, finishing of goods and aftercare is something
that our customers take huge pride in, which results in repeat
business for the majority. We have no desire to try and
replicate the quality of service offered by our customers and in
many respects it is that quality of service and the complexity
of personalisation that has prevented our industry going the
same way as many others. Luckily for us Trophies and Awards
require much more to finish and be ready for the consumer than
IE a pair of trousers.
Secondly, We do not want to be in a position whereby we find
ourselves inadvertently collecting your customers details via a
B2C e-commerce platform, as we believe this will do nothing more
than fuel negative speculation regarding our future intentions.
Your contacts are your contacts and we would rather it stayed
that way.
For many years we have encouraged all of our customers to
approach us as end users, place an order and see what our
reaction is. We can assure you that we refer all end user
enquiries to a customer that supports Trend in their local area.
We know the historic and recent speculation in the trade and
have happily encouraged our customers to do this for their own
peace of mind. We actively encourage to both email an enquiry
or visit us on site under as an end user and again see where
this leads.
With regard to price banding. We are a wholesaler and subscribe
to a wholesale model that has served us well. We would like to
think that we are flexible, reasonable and fair and would
encourage you to contact our sales representatives to discuss
the matter of price banding further and an improvement in terms
can be negotiated. However, its always good to hear views if it
is felt that we are approaching price banding in the wrong way.
Rightly or wrongly the above outlines the direction that we at
Trend have decided to head. We hope that its the right one and
would like to here any views positive or negative with regards
to what we have said.

A very reassuring post above from the nice guys up at
Trendsetting trophies, an excellent company with first class
customer service, always extremely friendly and helpful on the
telephone, it's always a pleasure to deal with them.
Nice to see which side of the fence they intend to be on it the
future.
They have obviously invested many thousands of pounds in their
new 2018 catalogue, so they deserve our support.
They will certainly be seeing a lot more of our business in the
future, and we will be linking the trophy section of our website
to theirs in the next few days.
As this is an open forum, no doubt the management at Glenway
will eventually be made aware of this thread, it would be nice
if they would come on and address our (legitimate) concerns, but
we will see.
We have not signed up here just to come on to knock Glenway,
like Trendsetting trophies, we have always found them excellent
to deal with, (although the girls on the phone at Glenway can be
a bit curt and could do with some charm school lessons)... we
have decided to see how things pan out over the next few months
but I'm not optimistic.
Dan.

Hi guys,
Having just read through the posts I am pleased to see that a
lot of people are not going to take this lying down. Glenway are
my main supplier, they have been since 2001 at least, though my
turnover with them dropped a fair bit last year when their
catalogue rrp prices went up a by about 20% and i started having
to push my customers towards other wholesalers catalogues. I
will be removing all glenway products from my website & showroom
and the catalogues will be staying in their box - there are
plenty of other suppliers out there. Glenway will quickly find
that supplying and keeping happy Joe Public is not the cakewalk
they seem to think it is

I am surprised we have so few comments from other trophy
traders, how many of us out there? I know we are a small band of
hard working business owners who work way past the usual hours
satisfying our clients but these comments on this site are a
very small number, where is the support for all our futures? if
you do not defend your business you will loose it?
I agree with Trend's comments regarding our sector as being
different from most businesses, it is a special business and we
do take pride in our work and engraving to make the recipient of
an award feel really special. Our reward is satisfaction in a
job well done and then yes of course making a decent amount of
money so we too can invest in our business and in our families.
We do require a decent profit (far more than 30%) and some
traders on line just cannot be making any profit even with lower
overheads compared to a shop or unit.
As for traders who offer free engraving well I am not able to
comment!! We just had to replace one of our engraving machines
at a considerable cost and replace our old Epilog laser, it's
the engraving charge that has to pay for investment in new
machines, I could go on but that's enough for now.
